DAYTONA BEACH It's a hospital
with a heart. That's how Jacob Nagib,
project manager for the new France
Tower, describes Halifax Health Med-
ical Center.
During a recent media tour of the
tower, Mr. Nagib explained how the
design puts patients and families
first.
"We wanted the human touch
throughout the facility," he said.
All 180 rooms in the $200-million
tower are single-patient.
The lobby has an almost resort-like
feel, with a two-story ceiling and all-
glass front looking out onto a court-
yard.
The purpose of the comfortable
design was to break the anxiety and
ease tension as patients and family
enter the building, Mr. Nagib said.
"We want a human environment,"
Mr. Nagib said. "When you enter any
part of the tower, there will be a per-
son to greet you, not a telephone for
you to call a number for assistance."
The waiting area in the lobby is
divided with partitions, so families.

Local resident hopes to 'heal the

Jackson remembers the horrors of the
Nigerian CivilWar.
She was born and raised in the
country ard was a child during the
conflict; which lasted from 1967 to
1970.
That's why the Daytona Beach resi-
dent wants to help stop the violence
that's escalating there now in the
Niger Delta region and has.made a
contribution using her talent in
music.
Ms. Jackson, who sings and plays
the saxophone, traveled back to Nige-
ria last year to create a CD called
"Heal the Land."
The CD was launched in the U.S. at
a program June 20 at the Center for
Civic Engagement at Bethune-Cook-
man University.
Accompanied by 20 musicians
from Nigeria, the CD contains songs'
of peace to stimulate dialog and bring
people together, Ms. Jackson said.
S"It's similar to the We are the World
project," said her husband Rafael,
who teaches history at B-CU.
The three songs on the C.D. are "It
Takes aVillage to Raise a Child," "Heal
the Land," and "Niger Delta, my Rain-
bow Land of Gold."
Ms. Jackson came to the United
States in 1980 and has lived in Day-
tona Beach since 1988.
.Local radio listeners may know her
as "Lady I" the host of a program fea-
turing music from around the world.
Called the International Rhythm
Train, the program runs every Sunday
night at 7 p.m. onWPUL 1590 AM.
The songs on the "Heal the World"
CD promote peace and encourage
the militants to lay down their arms,
Ms. Jackson said.
"I wanted to help in my little way, to
encourage the factions to come
together on common ground," she
said. "It's a global community. We
need to come together and help each
other out."
A childhood friend from Nigeria
helped round up the local musicians
and make the recording.
Since childhood, music has been a
big part of Ms. Jackson's life.
"When I was very small, I would
sing along with the whistling kettle,"
she said.' "That made everyone
laugh."
As a teenager in Nigeria, she
bought a songbook with her pocket
money and got in trouble with her
father because all of her time was to
be devoted to school studies, and
female musicians were frowned on at
that time.
She has continued with her music,
performing recently at a World of
Nations event in Jacksonville.

construction on Granada

be completed and open for
business by the end of the year.
The Highlander Corp, a
development company that
operates Caffeine, another
downtown restaurant, will
open Rose Villa and 31 on the
Boulevard. Rose Villa will be.
located in a three-story house
built in 1905 located at 43 West
Granada Blvd and is described
as a fine-dining establishment.
31-on the Boulevard will be
located in the old Ormond
Printers shop at 29-31 Granada
Blvd. Plans for the restaurant
have not been finalized.
Dorian Burt, project manag-
er for Highlander Corp., which
is owned by Bill Jones, said the
company works hard to make
sure new businesses add char-
acter to the downtown area.
"We keep the historical
nature of the buildings to the
best of our ability," Ms. Burt
said. "Mr. Jones is absolutely a
genius and visionary. He has
strong ties to historical build-
ings and the history of the
area."
Rose Villa will retain its early
20th century architecture. The
Ormond Printers building,
which was built in the 1950s,
will have an art deco exterior.

As in many downtown proj-
ects, parking availability is a
concern. The restaurants share

Thanks for returning my Wallet
Last Saturday morning, I visited a garage sale here in
Ormond Beach.:
I usually keep my spending money for these sales in my
pocket, but because it was my first stop of the morning, I
hadn't yet made the transfer of funds from wallet to pocket.
After deciding on what treasures I just couldn't live with-
out, I went back to my car to get some money.
Wallet in hand, I paid a lovely young lady, Amy, for my
purchases and put the rest of the bills in my pocket. I
loaded my car, and off I went to my next garage sale desti-
nation.
Later that morning, I went back to the location of my first
stop to see if I had left an inexpensive, but very useful pair
of "cheaters" eye-glasses.
As I walked up the drive the very first thing Amy said was
"Aie you missing something?" I replied "Yes, a pair of glass-
es." She looked at me funny and said I don't know about
your glasses but what about this?
It was my wallet. After leaving her house earlier that
morning I had paid for my other purchases out of the bills
in my pocket.
I hadn't even missed my wallet.
She proceeded to tell me that another shopper, a man,
had found my wallet on her front lawn, and turned it into
her. I couldn't believe how careless I had been.
Although the wallet only contained a few dollars in coins
it did hold various credit/debit cards and personal identifi-
cation.
Unfortunately I do not know the name of man who found
my shiny black wallet, but I will hope that he reads Home-
townNews and now knows how grateful I am for his hon-
esty.
Please know that I will repay his good deed by "paying it
forward" times two. Thanks again to Amy and to your won-
derful little paper that has allowed me to share some good
news about good people.
Watering restrictions are too much
I will conform to watering restrictions when there is a
countywide moratorium on new building permits.
Liberal Republican is all right
I can't understand why some Republicans are being so
nasty to our Governor Charlie Crist.
There is nothing wrong with being a liberal Republican,
and Governor Crist is a liberal Republican in the tradition of
Vice President Nelson Rockefeller and the Chief Justice of
the Supreme Court Earl Warren.
They were the pride of the Republican Party.
I would rather have Charlie Crist as my GOP senator in
the tradition of Vice President Rockefeller and Chief Justice
Warren than a Republican like Sarah Palin or Ronald Rea-
gan.
Why does it take so long to get stamps?
When ordering postages stamps from the postage system
catalog it takes a minimum of three weeks to receive them.
Maybe they should send them via UPS or FedEx.
Did I miss these ads?
An automobile dealer advertises that they will make a
donation to the USO for each foreign car traded in.
While the USO is terrific and our troops are fantastic, I do
not recall seeing these ads when the economy was strong
and cars were selling.
Did I miss those ads, or is this now wrapping up the flag
for personal gain?
Digital transition a little misleading

What is up with this?
Praise to the garbage men
After the recent floods in Ormond Beach and Holly Hill,
'there were literally mountains of ruined furniture piled in
front of the damaged homes.
I can't imagine the heartbreak for the homeowners to look
at their precious belongings thrown into the gutter like so
much trash: But little by little the smelly water-soaked mat-
tresses and assorted furniture were removed.
The job was extremely hard, and the days were hot, but
the garbage men came through again, just like after the hur-
ricanes.
Our streets are clean and the flood victims can start over.
We tend to thank the firemen and police, who also did a
great job, but how about a big thanks for the garbage men,
who are really the unsung heroes?
Crosswalks are important
I think it is very important for drivers and pedestrians to
know what the laws are concerning crosswalks and the
markers on the centerline of streets.
The large yellowish-green signs. show drivers that cross-
walks are ahead, to be aware of pedestrians.
The yellow markers in the center of the road show pedes-
trians where the crosswalks are located.
According to local officials, a vehicle is not required to
stop and allow pedestrians to cross if they are waiting on the
side of the road.
Of course it goes without saying, if people are already in
the process of crossing, a vehicle must stop.
Without knowing what these signs mean, people crossing
as well as drivers and passengers can be seriously injured or
even worse.
It is literally an accident waiting to happen.
Editor's note: Response from Ponce Inlet Police Chief Steve
Thomas:
Crosswalks exist at a number of locations within Ponce
Inlet. These crosswalks are generally placed in areas where
pedestrian activity is expected. In recent years additional
signage has been erected near some of these crosswalks.
Since that time we have received a number of inquiries
regarding the law related to the crosswalks.
The most common question is whether or not vehicles
are required to stop at a crosswalk if someone is standing on

investigation and on the advice of
lawyers in and out of the University.
Though the University refuses to release
details of the investigation, Dr. Reed
told us a young woman confided in a
trusted teacher and the two reported
the harassment directly to her. When
the student filed a formal complaint, Dr.
Reed said she began the investigation
that ended in the professors' dismissals.
Reed said Bethune-Cookman is a faith-
based University where faculty are
supposed to be role models. She said
though she was stunned at the alleged
behavior, she believes her actions sent a
clear message that harassment of any.
kind won't be tolerated on campus. The
administration did contact Daytona
Beach police, but investigators there say
unless extortion was involved,-like a sex
for grades situation, sexual harassment
isn't criminal in nature.WESH 2 has
learned the student did feel pressure,
but refused to file a criminal complaint.
Dr. Reed confirmed the student actually
left the Universitybecause of the
professors' behavior, but may return in
the fall. E-mails and blogs have surfaced
that suggest the administration wanted
the teachers out because they opposed
Dr. Reed, but Reed toldWESH 2 that is
just ugly gossip. She said she wasn't out
to retaliate against anyone, but rather
acted onlyto protect her students and
the school.

the side of the roadway, waiting to cross. Because some
states do require this, we want to provide some information
that we hope is helpful.
Florida Statute 316.130 covers pedestrian traffic regula-
tions. Section 7(b) states that "The driver of a vehicle at any
crosswalk where signage so indicates shall stop and remain
stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross a roadway when the
pedestrian is in the crosswalk or steps into the crosswalk
and is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle
is traveling or when the pedestrian is approachingso closely
from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger."
Except for provisions relating to blind persons, who are
walking with guide dogs or utilizing an extended white
cane, this statute does not require a driver stop for pedestri-
ans who are simply standing on the roadside at or near a
crosswalk waiting to cross. However if a vehicle has
stopped in the roadway at a crosswalk to allow a pedestrian
to cross, it is unlawful for another vehicle approaching from
the rear to overtake and pass the stopped vehicle.
While the statute is clear on this issue, we urge everyone
to approach crosswalks with caution, watching for both
pedestrians and motorists. If you have any questions
regarding this issue or any other traffic problem, please feel
free to contact the police department.
In response to
'Watch for fleas and ticks at kennels'
I can understand the grief that this writer is going through
but please understand fleas and ticks are a problem with
this weather and finding them on a dog can be a challenge.
The ticks can hide between the dog's toes, in their ears,
and basically anyplace.
They can transfer to humans and jump on the next ani-
mal host they find.
To be upset with a kennel, whether it is a shelter or a
boarding kennel is wrong.
They battle these problems on a regular basis.
They do everything that they can to keep the problem
down, but it does happen.
Your best defense is a monthly application of flea and tick
medication.. I know some people stop in the winter, but
unless you are willing to put out the expense for the entire
year, you are taking risks.
They can also be transferred at dog parks, grooming par-
lors and anyplace that dogs are at.
My suggestion is that if you know you are going to board
or have your pet groomed to get the flea and tick medica-
tion done early enough that it won't be washed off.
Usually boarding kennels don't wash a dog until the day
before they are expected to go home so I don't see how that
could have transferred the ticks to your dog.
Ticks are a problem. Blaming people won't stop the prob-
lem. Educating them will.
Possible mail theft
being investigated
The Postal Inspector General's office
is investigating a possible case of mail
theft in Ormond Beach. The case was
opened when an Ormond Beach man
didn't get an expected gift card in the
mail. He tracked it and learned it had
been used at an Ormond BeachWal-
Mart store. The victim alerted police
who got store surveillance video
showing a woman in a U.S. postal
service uniform using the gift card. The
employee has since been identified as
an area mail carrier and is being
interviewed about the allegation. Mail
theft is a federal offense.
Police want to solve
old murder
Police in Ormond Beach desperately
want to solve a grisly murder that
happened two-and-a half years ago,
and they're still looking at a convicted
serial killer serving time in Georgia.
The dismembered remains of 27-year-
old Michael Louis were found in
plastic bags along the banks of the
Tomoka River in December of 2007.
The young man disappeared from his
South Daytona home around Thanks-
giving. Police know convicted killer
Gary Hilton was in Florida around the
same time, and they know he mur-
dered and dismembered a Georgia
hiker and mutilated a woman in
Northwest Florida. Detective Jamie
Gogarty said by virtue of the similari-
ties and timing, they continue to call
Hilton a person of interest. Gogarty
said they have some new evidence
they are testing to see if they can tie it
to Hilton, but they said Hilton is one of
several suspects they are looking at in
connection to the local murder. They
just recently reached out to officers in
the Miami area after a dismembered
body was found in Biscayne Bay
several weeks ago.
Be careful in the heat
On the first day of official summer,
our area was officially under a heat
advisory that warned us of dangerous
temperatures and suggested people
who don't have to be outdoors stay
inside. There's no doubt the summer
weather steamed in like a sauna far
earlier than usual and the hot air,
combined with thick humidity, can be
dangerous for anyone and particularly
hard to bear for seniors. Officials
advise all of us to be careful, check on
neighbors who, for economic reasons,
may not turn the air conditioning on,
wear light colored clothing and drink
plenty of water in the heat of the day.
Workers who labor under the hot sun
are advised to take plenty of breaks,
wear hats in addition to the light
clothes if possible and stay hydrated.

selling furniture on consign-

money.
Before buying the busi-

enjoyed it because there's
"something new every day."

Thai restaurant
offers delicious food
in a tranquil setting
By Wayne Grant
wgrant@hometownnewsol.com .
ORMOND BEACH -
Even after many years of
dining out, my wife Heidi
and I had never eaten at a
Thai restaurant.
So when a Thai restaurant
opened up close to our
home, we were excited to try.
something new. We're sure
glad we did.
Thai Erawan, located in
Granada Plaza beside the
Walgreens Drug store, has
been offering their wide
range of Thai selections at
reasonable prices for a cou-
ple of months.
When you enter the
restaurant, you leave the
busy, noisyworld behind for
a pleasant and tranquil din-
ing experience.
The first thing you see is a
beautiful Buddha waterfall.
As you walk to your table,
you'll notice elephants
throughout the attractive
decor. In Thai lore, an
erawan is.a multi-headed
elephant that brings good
fortune.
You'll find a peaceful.
ambience and.friendly staff
that make the meal very
enjoyable.
SThe restaurant looks
upscale, and someone pass-
ing by may think it appears
pricey. But it's a wallet-
friendly establishment,
especially the lunch menu,
*where prices range from
$8.50 to $9.50.
The restaurant is owned
by Kit and Amm
Khongkhukul who moved to
the U.S. from Thailand in
2000.
Amm often greets cus-
tomers at the door while Kit
supervises the kitchen.
The couple has owned a
restaurant in Ocala, the
Royal Orchid, for several
years.
When they were ready to
open a second restaurant,
they checked out several
other Central Florida cities,
decided on Ormond Beach
and are glad they came.
"We love it here," said
Amm. "It's so close to the
beach and we love the
weather."
The dinner menu offers
many choices for appetiz-
ers, soups and salads.
Entrde choices are catego-
rized by noodle dishes, fried
rice; specialties, seafood
and vegetarian dishes.
With so much available,
my wife and I agreed that we
will need to return many
times.
You can let the server
know how spicy you want
the food. The choices are
mild, medium, hot and Thai
hot.
Chili sauce and chili flakes
are served with entrees so
you can season according to
taste.
Some people think Thai
food is very spicy and has

strong curry, but that's really
a misconception, said Kit.
"We cook with herbs and
don't use much oil," Kit said.
"Thai food is getting more
popular because people are
trying it and finding they
like it."
Kit said the contractor
who built the restaurant was
scared to try Thai food at
first, but gave it a try and has
been back many times.
Beer, wine and sake are
available. Having heard' of
sake all my life, I had to try it.
I ordered the sake flight
for $5. It consists of three
sakes of different flavors:
raspberry, pear and gingjo:
The verdict: delicious.

a salad at Thai Erawan in
but the rice wine is also
made in Thailand.
Appetizers range from
spring rolls for $4.50 to Mus-
sel Basils for $9.50.
We chose the Thai Erawan
sampler (for two) for $12.50,
which included egg roll,
spring roll, crab Rangoon,
fried shrimp and fried.won-
ton with two dipping
sauces.
My favorite was the fried
shrimp. It's a must for
shrimp lovers.
Also offered are soups
including wonton soup for
$3.95 and crabmeat soup for
$5.50.
A wide range of salads are

Thai Erawan salad for $7.95,
consisting of vegetables,
chicken and shrimp served
with House peanut dress-

The salad, like the entree,
was garnished with. an

There are many entrees to
choose from.
Sweet and Sour Chicken

Lobster for $24.95 and there
are many choices in
Between.
I chose the Pad Thai, one
of the most popular noodle
dishes. It's a, dish of small
rice noodles stir-fried with
egg, bean sprouts, scallions
and ground peanuts.
It was a generous serving
and quite delicious.
My wife selected the
Sweet and Sour Shrimp, a
generous serving of shrimp,
tomatoes, cucumber, onion,
mushrooms, pineapple and
bell pepper sauteed in sweet
and sour sauce and accom-
panied by jasmine rice.
Heidi said it was very flavor-

Water, nature, small-town charm
Vero Beach has lots to offer visitors
By Jessica Tuggle
jtuggle@hometownnewsol.com
VERO BEACH What do
you get when you mix classy
boutiques, historic locations,
beachfront hotels and down-
town shopping for fresh pro-
duce?
Vero Beach: an ideal vaca-
tion spot that doesn't have to
cost an arm and a leg.
Centrally located on Flori-
da's Treasure Coast, the per-
fect place to get away is no
farther than the charming
small town ofVero Beach.
Miles of idyllic beaches are
perfect for swimming, mak-
ing sandcastles and picnics.
And easy Intercoastal
SWaterway access means
deep-sea fishing or even
pleasure sailing is just a short
boat ride away.
But the city that will cele-
brate its 90th anniversary
'this year, has other attrac-
tions.that have been around
:for decades, including a 1903
train station.
The Driftwood Inn and
Restaurant is another must-
see when inVero Beach.
Established in 1937 and
logged in the National Regis-
ter of Historic Places, the inn
captures the rustic, ocean-
side atmosphere of the city.
The building, which is dec-
orated with and partially
built with driftwood, is cov-
ered with unusual antiques
collected by the original
owner and Vero Beach pio-
neer, Waldo Sexton.
The beauty of Florida's
natural vegetation combined
with ornamental plants from
around the world, are on
viewfor visitors walking the
trails of McKee Botanical
Garden, also inVero Beach.
The 18 acres of land, listed
on the National Register, are
filled with ponds, streams,
luscious green foliage and a
wide array of tropical plants
to delight the whole family.
Somewhat newer to town,
but nonetheless a big part of
the community, are Gloria
Estefan's Costa d'Este beach
resort, the Vero Beach Hotel
and Spa, and Disney's Vero
Beach Resort,, located on
prime oceanfrorit property.
Costa d'Este's dining expe-
rience, Oriente, specializes
in Cuban cuisine with an
