Two cities considering red light

cameras, citations

By Bill Borden
For Hometown News

* HOLLY HILL What does New
York City, Philadelphia, Washington
D.C., Seattle, San Francisco, Hous-
ton, St. Louis, Miami and a host of
other major U.S. cities have in com-
mon with Daytona Beach and Holly
Hill?
It could be red light cameras if
the commissioners in both cities
move forward with plans to install
the devices at selected intersec-
tions..
Holly Hill Police Chief Mark Bark-
er had Pete Cuccaro of American
Traffic Solutions make a presenta-

tion about the cameras to the Holly.
Hill Commission at their last meet-
ing. Mr. Cuccaro has also made pre-
sentations to Daytona Beach city
officials.
American Traffic Solutions
installs the cameras at the compa-
ny's expense and gets a percentage
of the revenues collected from cita-
tions for violations. The cities
would not have any financial
investment in the program.
Mr. Curraco told Holly Hill com-
missioners that, over time, the
cameras can reduce violations by as
much as 73 percent, collisions by as
much as.41 percent and fatalities by
as much as 35 percent based on

studies that have
been made by both
the company and
the cities where the
cameras are cur-
rently operating.
They also can
reduce the num-
ber of "copy cat
red light runners" who follow ini-
tial violators through an intersec-
tion.
Chief Barker said he likes the idea
because it can have multiple bene-
fits to the city and residents.
"I like the concept because it is an
equal application of the law,"- he
said. "Another reason I like it is that

during
hurricane evacuations the
cameras can monitor traffic and
assist us in an emergency."
Commissioner Mark' Reed
expressed concern about "judicial
due process" for violators who are

Ormond puts repair permits on fast track

ALL DAY DINING

By Wayne Grant
For Hometown News

ORMOND BEACH The
City Commission enacted an
ordinance Tuesday night for
temporary emergency proce-
dures to help residents
rebuild after recent flooding
and guard against unlicensed
contractors.
It will be in effect for 45
days.
"(We are doing) everything
we know to help residents,"
Mayor Fred Costello said.

"We listened to some very
frustrated people the other
night."
The measure provides for
speedy and coordinated
management ofbuilding per-
mit applications and fees and
the waiving of some fees.
The ordinance states that
upon receipt of notice of a
damaged structure, the
Building Division will expe-
dite a scheduled inspection.
The ordinance waives per-
mit fees for specific work
items that do not require a

site plan review and waives
fees for removal of trees relat-
Sed to the storm. It permits
issuance of in-the-field per-
mits by inspectors for non-
site plan review items.
In regard to unlicensed
contractors, the resolution
states that the Building Divi-
sion will assist citizens with
inquiries as to whether a
licensed -contractor is
required for the repair and
whether a contractor is
appropriately licensed by the
State of Florida and has a cer-

tificate of competency issued
by the City as required.
Violators will be reported
to the Board of Contractors
for potential revocation or
suspension of certificate of
competency. Law enforce-
ment may also become
involved.
During the floods occur-
ring the week of May 17,
more. than 27 inches of rain
fell, exceeding the "seven day,
100-year storm event" by sev-
eral inches.
One hundred and sixteen

homes received minor dam-
age, 28 homes had major
damage and one business
was damaged.
The total estimated dam-
age was $4.4 million for resi-
dential/business and
$450,000 for public infra-
structure.
In a special meeting on
May 26, the commission
extended the emergency dec-
laration by seven days and
hired legal and environmen-
tal consultants to help resi-
dents.

Protect yourself this summer

VOLUSIA COUNTY-The
beach. So calm, peaceful...
and dangerous. Do local
beachgoers know how to
protect themselves from too
much exposure to the sun?
According to a local derma-
tologist and a lifeguard cap-
tain, people have a lot to
learn.
Dr. Ronald Sherman, an
Ormond Beach dermatolo-
gist, said sunscreens with
high SPF numbers actually
cause a problem because
people get overconfident
and do not reapply as often
as they should.
Also, the ozone layer is

much smaller than it used to
be, Dr. Sherman said. "Fifty
years ago you could stay in
the sun for two hours. Now
you can bum in 20 minutes,"
he said.
Many people are surprised
to learn that an umbrella
does not provide complete
safety.
Linda and George Sullo of
Ormond' Beach, a retired
couple from Ormond Beach,
visit the beach three times a
week. "We're concerned
about skin cancer," Ms. Sullo,
"We always sit under an
umbrella."
However, Dr. Sherman
said you are not safe under
an umbrella because the sun
is reflected by the sand and

water.
Volusia County Beach
Patrol Captain Scott Peter-
sohri said he and the life-
guards see lots of people get-
ting burned on the beach,
even with the current public-
ity about skin cancer.
"They come to the beach
and just don't get it," he said.
"They want to get a suntan in
a short time and end up ruin-
ing their vacation."
Mr. Petersohn said he has
seen some pretty severe
bums. "When I was on the
tower I would see a guy walk-
ing down the beach with the
tops of his feet so blistered
up they don't look like feet

what is happening at the
intersection, according to
the Chief.
Mr. Cuccaro cautioned
the commission that they
should not include rev-
enues generated by the
cameras in their budgets
because the income
decreases after the first
two years as people start
obeying the lights.
Mayor Roland Via said
he was OK with that.
"This is not about rev-
enue, he said. "It is all
about safety and accident
reduction."
Failure to obey a traffic
control device is a code
violation and therefore
does not cost a driver
points on his license.
"It's just like a parking
ticket," Mr Cuccaro said.
"The car owner is respon-
,sible for the violation."
Citations can be
appealed to the city and
resolved through a magis-
trate or designated city
employee.
Commissioners said
they will hold a workshop
on the subject before
deciding to get red light
cameras. That workshop
has not yet been sched-
uled. Daytona Beach com-
missioners asked Police
Chief Mike Chitwood for
more information before
they move forward.

Sending water west may help avoid flooding

By Bill Borden
For Hometown News

HOLLY HILL Horace
Greeley's famous quote of
"Go West, young man" may
soon apply to the flood
waters of Eastern Volusia
County if a proposal by the
St. Johns River Water Man-
agement District becomes a
reality.
Chris Hurst, Holly Hill
public works director, gave a
report to the City Commis-
sion at a recent meeting on
how the city fared during the
recent torrential rains and
wide-spread flooding. While
it was bad, Mr. Hurst said,
Holly Hill fared better than
the neighboring cities of
Ormond Beach and Daytona
Beach.
"The first few days the sys-
tem worked but we were just
overwhelmed when the
drainage ditches came up
over their banks," Mr. Hurst
said. "Easterly winds and
high tides backed the river
up so the canals could not
flow freely. When the tide is
up the ditches have to fill up
higher before they can flow
out into the river."
The city experienced 30.5
total inches of rain in six
days. And, with 21 inches of
that falling in the first 36
hours, the system was over-
whelmed, Mr. Hurst said.

He described an
encounter with a federal sur-
veyor measuring the water
flow in the LPGA ditch..
"She said there was 520
cubic-feet-per-second flow-
ing through the ditch," Mr.
Hurst said. "That translates
into 200,000 gallons per
minute. At that rate, the
average retention pond
would fill up in less than 10
to 15 minutes. You simply
cannot dig a big enough
pond to handle that much
water."
But, relief could be on its
way if the cities can work
together in cooperation with
the St. Johns River Water
Management District, he
said.
There is a proposal to cre-
ate a system to redirect the
water from its traditional
route into the Halifax River
to the western areas of the
county with multiple bene-
fits for all participants.
"There is some interesting
work being done by the St.
Johns River Water Manage-
ment District," Mr. Hurst
said. "There is now a propos-
al to install flood gates on
the LPGA ditch, Reed Canal
and the Halifax canal the
three main drainage systems
for the east side of the coun-
ty and then pump the
water they collect out to the
west and into the recharge

area west of 1-95."
The project, called the
Nova Canal Stormwater
Diversion/Alternative Water
Supply Augmentation Pro-
ject, is currently only in the
discussion stage, said Dis-
trict spokesman Hank
Largin.
"We're just trying to let
(the cities) know what can
be done and how it can ben-
efit them," he said.
Like its name implies, the
project has two goals.
"It is a cooperative effort
that will help with water
supply and help in the cre-
ation of flood relief," Mr.
Largin said. "It will signifi-
cantly slow stormwater dis-
charge to the Halifax River."
There would be several
direct benefits to Holly Hill,
according to Mr. Hurst.
"The ability to pump flood
water westward will gain us
time and keep the water
from rising so quickly in the
ditches and retention
ponds," he said. "A second-
ary benefit is, by pumping
the flood water west, it
would remove the storm
drains and the LPGA ditch
from dumping into the Hali-
fax River system and help us
get into compliance with the
new and more rigid federal
restrictions on the quality of
water going into the river."
A third benefit is the city

could pump its treated waste
water into retention ponds
or a reservoir for reuse by
either east Volusia cities or
west Volusia cities where
water needs are becoming
more critical.
"Additionally, our east well
field has had some salt water
intrusion. Flood gates would
limit the back flow of salt
water up the LPGA ditch and
might improve the quality of
our water," Mr. Hurst said.
Pumping the water to the
west could also serve to
replenish the city's wells
located in that area, he said.
Currently, five to 10 inches
of rain will normally cause
flooding in some areas of the
city, according to Mayor Via.
"While the system has
been improved during the
last eight years, there are still
areas that need the city's
attention," he said.
Mayor Via noted that hav-
ing the ability to quickly
pump the excess water west-
ward will improve the city's
future chances of avoiding
flooding like it just experi-
enced.
The cost estimate to go
west with the water is about
$50 million, Mr. Hurst said.
That is much less than the
estimates of the damage that
was done by the recent
storms, according to govern-
ment statistics.

In response to
'Ormond Beach animals must be
spayed & neutered'

I believe I read that Holly Hill also passed a mandatory
spay/neuter law.
Thumbs up on this article. Now if we really had responsi-
ble pet owners, I don't think it would have come to this.
There are six unaltered male dogs in a four-house radius
of mine, four of which are pit bulls. I have nothing against
pit bulls. They are great dogs if well socialized.
However, these six dogs are yard kept; no walks, no taking
for rides, no human contact except to throw food and water
to them.
These are the dogs that should be neutered. If they want
to pass a law making it mandatory, let's follow thru with it.
Two of these male pit bulls now have a female pit bull
puppy that will be pregnant in a. matter of four to five
months. And why? Now the article says "Unaltered permits
will be available.for animals with medical issues, or those
involved with shows, competition, law enforcement, serv-
ice, breeding, hunting or herding etc."
All this is fine, however, what is going to be the proof they
have hunting dogs?
I wonder if these people can even prove these dogs are
vaccinated.
The same problem exists with female dogs. This female
pit bull puppy will now be pregnant at her first heat.
I would love to see this law followed through with, but
like any other law people won't care and it will go nowhere.
People, get your ego out of your behind and get your pets
neutered/spayed.

Local Ormond Beach firefighters help out

We all have been impacted in one way or another by the
recent floods. In times of trouble, it is nice to know that
there are still people you can count on.
Recently an Ormond Beach resident was devastated by
floods.
A single mother of five children, ages 8 to 16 years old,
had to evacuate her home due to the flood waters entering
her house.
The water came in and ruined everything this family had..
All she and her children could do was leave their home with
just the clothes on their backs.
After she and her kids left, their home was broken into
and vandalized.
Friends were able to get them temporary housing until
she can move back home. However, Red Cross did come
and look at her damages and stated that she could contact
the Red Cross later for relief benefits.
Upon hearing all this, the Ormond Beach firefighters
union local 3499 immediately came to her aid.
The firefighters where able to give the mother a cash
donation in order for her to purchase new clothes for her
children as well as needed medications for one of her kids.
When times are tough and budgets are being cut it makes
me mad to think of a city cutting the firefighters' budget.
They are the ones who are always willing to help out no
matter what.

Governor should move out, not up

Our governor, by only his own estimation, thinks he's
done such a great job here that it's time to go to Washing-
ton, D.C.
In a period of financial stress unlike anything we've
experienced since the Great Depression, he's all done.
Mission accomplished.
'Education issues and financing is completed.
The insurance issues have been resolved. The budget is
satisfactory. It's all good.
Hey Charlie, I got news for you.

Republicans are supposed to be conservative. Conser-
vatism is at the foundation of their ideals and is what distin-
guishes them from the Democrats.
Second, why do you think most of the Republicans got
voted out of office? They were acting more like Democrats;
spending our money like drunken sailors and not holding to
their conservative principles.
The Republican platform has always been smaller gov-
ernment and lower taxes. They forgot that, and lost their
jobs for their lack of responsibility.
We do not need more people to rubber stamp president
Barack Obama's out-of-control spending and massive push
toward socialism. What we need are more true conserva-
tives to stand up and say no.
Our Constitution is one of the greatest documents ever
conceived and has given us the most freedom and the high-
est standard of living any nation has ever known. Now, Pres-
ident Obama and the Democratic leadership are destroying
the very document they have sworn to uphold, and our
standard of living and way of life will soon be a thing of the
past if we don't get more true conservatives in office to stop
them.

Workers should stand up for themselves

I recently was told that because of our economy, some of
the local construction contractors/owners gave their
employees a 10 percent cut in pay. I figure that's a sign of the
times.
Then when I questioned if the owners had dropped their
hourly rates that they charge the customers, I was told no, -
their still charging the same if not more.
To the owner/contractors that are doing this, I say shame
on you. It's nothing but greed, plain and simple.
To the employees that stayed with these companies, it's,
understood.
You have families to feed and bills to pay. You don't have
much of a choice, but how much is enough?
If the owners get away with it now what makes you think
that they're going to stop later. The state does have a mini-
mum wage limit.
Don't let them continue down this road. Consider talking
to a local union representative. Protect your futures. Make
and insure a better life for you and your families.
The police and firemen are union, and they should be
because they're important in our society. Aren't you as
important?

Graduation section is great

Thank you, Hometown News. You have printed the senior
pictures for the past two years at no charge.
The parents of these graduates have supported the local
daily newspaper for years, and it still refuses to print the
pictures of their seniors on this special day.

Why pay bills?

Someone needs to explain to me why I pay my bills. I have
never been late for a bill and am only $2,000 in debt because
of the recent floods. I carry full auto and home insurance
and have always done so. I carry uninsured motorist insur-
ance to cover me in case of an accident with an uninsured
motorist. Both of my deductibles are high to help reduce the
cost of my premiums.
Now that I have water damage, money from the govern-
ment would be nice to help me with my expenses to replace
my water-damaged carpet or fix my roof that has leaked.
Now that Governor Charlie Crist has declared Volusia Coun-
ty a state of emergency and signed a bill to help out home-
owners there is help on the way.
However the help is for those who don't have insurance or

We are not as dumb as you think we are. Look, we see
you are not up to the job.
What with all the traveling you've had to do to Europe
and with a new bride.
You look tired. So, please go with our blessings.
Just make sure you move out of our lives completely. We
do not need any more "help" from you in Washington, D.C.
Can you imagine this guy in Washington representing
us? Talk about the Peter Principle.

Chuck Wadro
Ormond Beach

who are delinquent on their bills. The rest of us responsible
citizens are left to fend for ourselves. Why is it that you have
to be delinquent or carry no insurance in order to get free
help from the government?
It is the same with the bailouts.
Why is the government helping those who have made
money year after year and are just now starting to lose
money or projected monies? .
.Companies are stating that they projected to mke i$1
million and in fact they only made $6 million and are telling
the government that they lost $4 million, so that they can
benefit from the bailouts.
The same goes for those of us that pay our mortgage. We
Cannot refinance for a better rate because our homes have
to appraise for a certain below market value in order to get a
decent rate without having to pay private mortgage insur-
ance or high closing costs.
So please, explain to me why I shouldn't play the game
and go delinquent on purpose in order to be helped out or
put my problems on those that carry full insurance.

Post office should look at cost of stamps

I received mail from Newt Gingrich. The postage was not
even nine cents for a heavy letter. Last week, I had some-
thing from John McCain. His postage was less than the regu-
lar postage price. My husband received mail from a hearing
aid testing site and that was under the required postage.
I think the post office should reverse their charges. The
junk mail and rhetoric people should be charged the actual
price. Give the regular customers discounts.
I think it is a disgrace that propaganda can be mailed for
not even 10 cents for a letter, and regular stamps have gone
up another two cents.
I think it has to stop somewhere.

Israel will not let another
Holocaust take place

We read in the daily paper that Israel and president
Barack Obama are at odds over Israel building settlements
in and around the Gaza Strip.
Who is to say where settlements are built.
Nobody seems to care if and when Hamas fires rocket into
Israel at any time, day or night, and leave behind a trail of
death and destruction.
We read President Obama wants to import refugees from
the Gaza Strip into the United States and make them citi-
zens.
I wonder how many of these imported persons will be
Hamas terrorists setting up cells here in our states.
President Obama better be careful who he gets cozy with
and whose toes he is stepping on.
Israel will not let another Holocaust take place at any cost.

In response to
'People shouldn't take handicapped parking'

I couldn't agree more to the response from the rant people
shouldn't take handicapped parking.
I too have a license plate and not a placard. When I made
the choice of which one to get it was based solely on my
observations.
It seemed that many of the cars with placards were driven
by very young, healthy people that didn't look handicapped
in the least.
I surmised that that they had "borrowed" the card from a
relative.
Those that have a permanent plate can't switch it with
another car so easily.
It is good that we have so many busybodies that feel com-
fortable shooting from the hip without the facts.
Maybe they could try making citizen arrests when they
feel that those without placards are parking illegally in
handicapped slots.

anymore," Capt. Petersohn
said. "I would stop them and
say, 'Hey, you need to cover up
or your feet are going to fall
off.'"
The dangers of the beach
include more than just sun-
bum, Capt. Petersohn said.
"We treat many people with
dehydration problems," he
said. "People spend all day on
the beach with little food and
water and then literally fall
out. We find them passed out
by the hot dog stand," he said.
Capt. Petersohn said
beachgoers should bring an
array of food and drink for a
day out. "The sun dehydrates
the body. And it's not just
water you need. You need
sugar and salts ... food and
water together," Capt. Peter-
sohn said. "If you just drink
water you lose electrolytes."
He also pointed out the
danger of alcohol. "Drinking
alcohol wrecks your judg-
ment and you stay out in the
sun too long," the captain
said. "It also causes the body
to dehydrate."
Lifeguard training includes
a section on protection from
the sun, Captain Petersohn
said. "We tell them to slip,

slap, and slop," he said. "Slip
on a shirt, slap on a hat, and
slop on sunscreen. This came
from Australia where they are
always out in the sun."
Instructions to the life-
guards also include: Stay
hydrated, use extra caution
and cover up between the
hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
when the sun is strongest, and
keep reapplying lotion. The
lifeguards are issued umbrel-
las, sun block, floppy hats and
shirts. They are advised to stay
out of the sun as much as pos-
sible and to be aware that
umbrellas don't protect you
from harmful rays reflected
off the sand and water.
Dr. Sherman said when you
expose yourself to the sun
you're "playing with fire." He
said he sees the results in his
office. "I sometimes have to
.tell people I have to cut a
piece out of them (to remove
cancer)."
Dr. Sherman said some-
times people aren't worried
about skin cancer because
they don't think it will happen
to them. He said once when
he warned a person of skin
cancer, the person said, "I
have to die of something."
"I told him you might not
be lucky enough to die," Dr.
Sherman said. "You might
suffer for years."

Protect yourself from the sun
Generously apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant
'sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least
15 to all exposed skin. "Broad-spectrum" provides pro-
tection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B
(UVB) rays. Re-apply approximately every two hours,
even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.
Wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt,
. pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, where possible.
* Seek shade when appropriate, remembering that the
sun's rays are strongest.betweeri 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If
your shadow is shorter than you are, seek shade.
* Protect children from sun exposure by playing in the
shade, using protective clothing and applying sunscreen.
* Use extra caution near water, snow and sand as they
reflect the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase
your chance of sunburn.
* Get vitamin D safely through a healthy diet that may
include vitamin supplements. Don't seek the sun.
* Avoid tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from the sun and
tanning beds can cause skin cancer and wrinkling. If you
want to look like you've been in the sun, consider using a
sunless self-tanning product, but continue to use sun-
screen with it.
* Check your birthday suit on your birthday. If you notice
anything changing, growing or bleeding on your skin, see
a dermatologist. Skin cancer is very treatable when
caught early.

Sunshine Sunset

Grill shines

Fresh food and friendly service
hallmark of new dining spot

By Jeanne Willard
Willard@hometownnewsol.com
ORMOND BEACH -
From eye-opening
breakfasts and lunch
specialties, to home-
made dinner entrees, the
Sunshine Sunset Grill is
aptly named.
The newly opened
restaurant located at
1185 W. Granada Blvd.,
offers homemade spe-
cialties from 7 a.m.
through the dinner hour.
"We are about fresh-
ness, quality and consis-
tency," said owner Don
Burke, who operates the
restaurant with business
partner Chris Forrester.
My husband and I
stopped by for dinner
last week and found that
the busy breakfast and
lunch spot transforms
into a candlelight bistro
in the evenings.
Decorated in soothing
shades of yellow and
green complimented by
earth-toned tiles on the
floor, it's a lovely spot to
relax with-a glass of wine
or frosty mug of beer
while perusing the
menu.
You probably won't
recognize the wine.
brands, Mr. Burke said,
and that's by design.
The owners took great
pains to offer wine

choices not found in
grocery stores to provide
a unique, reasonably
priced selection, he said.
SThe signature crab
cakes served with
remoulade sauce on a
bed of field greens were
delicious. Lots of
chunky-crab pieces with
very little filler.
I ordered a cup of the
homemade New Eng-
land clam chowder,
which is so often disap-
pointing, but that's not
the case here.
The classic soup,
served with oyster crack-
ers, was creamy, filled
with chunks of clam and
potatoes and delicately
seasoned.
I chose the Bourbon
Street pasta for my
entree and my husband
could not resist ordering
the slow-roasted prime
rib.
My pasta dish featured
penne tossed with gulf
shrimp, crawfish, tasso
ham, mushrooms and
asparagus in a creamy
roasted tomato sauce.
The dish, with its sub-
tle spices and seafood,
was delightful and
reminded me of entrees
I've enjoyed in New
Orleans, one of my
favorite cities.
My husband's prime
rib was done to a medi-

soned with a homemade
herb garlic rub and
served with garlic
mashed potatoes and
crispy steamed vegeta-
bles.
Our server also recom-
mended other signature
items including a unique
12-ounce pork porter-
house, a bone-in rib eye
Steak and flame-grilled
salmon.
Those who know me,
can count on me sam-
pling dessert.
We split a banana par-
fait, which is homemade
banana cake layered
with fresh whipped
cream and strawberries,
crowned with caramel
drizzle.
What a great way to
end the meal.

Other house special-
ties include a breakfast
fruit appetizer consist-
ing of skewered fruit
rolled in tapioca and
toasted coconut, freshly
squeezed orange juice
and homemade corned
beef hash.
The. restaurant also
offers dining on an out-
door patio.
Breakfasts start at
$4.95, lunches start at
$5.95 for a soup and
salad combo and din-
ners entrees are, all
under $20.

been given the eight keys of
true happiness: purpose,
love, peace, health, abun-
dance, faith, joy and creativi-

courage, determination and
experience to move them
forward. Now it's time for
action. Success is assured.

SA good first mate is not just a spectator

Hope that you enjoyed
last week's column
about the catch and
release of a huge barracu-
da.
That was fun to do and
fun to write about. It did
bring up a couple points
that call for a bit more
exploration.
One of the great and
interesting things about
fishing in the inshore
brackish waters is that you
can never be sure what

you might catch. The big
cuda was a rare one to be
sure, but all manner of
creatures show up in time.
I have caught sharks,
grouper, permit, look
downs, stargazers and

even a big octopus while
fishing the rivers.
I hope that you won't let
our catch of the barracuda
discourage you from
enjoying the water.
Each summer skiers,
tube riders, wake boarders
and others spend a lot of
time in local waters
without incident. A few
years ago, a spate of freak
injuries caused a lot of
negative press to.fall on
Florida's barracudas.
For the most part their
reputation is undeserved.
As one who has harvested
my own spiny lobster for
many years, I can tell you
that whenever you find
lobster you will find 'cudas
nearby.
It is their favorite meal.
When they see a diver
catch one they are tempt-
ed to try and steal it, but
they don't. They fear
humans as well they
should. We are much more
dangerous to them than
they are to us. Same for
sharks.
After my description of
the catch, the comment I
heard most was why would

you release such a menac-
ing thing alive? We
released it because we did
not intend to eat it. Simple
as that. All of the sea's
creatures are important.
The other thing I wanted
to talk about is the role of
the second fisherman
when the first has hooked
something big. Be it a five-
pound trout or a 10-pound
red, it is your job to assist
in the landing of the catch.
I had been in that situa-
tion many times and when
the big fish hit I knew to
jump to action.
Although we were
throwing lures, we did
have baited lines in the
water.
Those had to be reeled
up and stowed out of the
way. Al was going to need
a clear path fore and aft.
The trolling motor had to
be pulled from the water
and the outboard started. I
realized right away that he
would be losing a lot of
line to the thing, and I
would need to follow with
the boat at a good clip. As
the fight zigzagged down
the river, I worked to keep
our vessel across the boat
traffic so as to block the
line from the sharp
propellers of passing
boats.
If you are ever in this
situation, your biggest job
will be in helping to land
the fish. Normally this is
done with a swift and
accurate dip of the net,
but in this case our dip net
would barely hold a
portion of the barracuda's
head.
I don't recommend my
thoughts of jumping out of
the boat to try and wrestle
the thing into submission.
I would have been wiser
to prepare a rope with a
slipknot to use as a tail
lasso.
Luckily I was able (just
barely) to lift it into the
boat.
I can tell you when that

nearly two-hour fight was
finished; I was as tired as
Al. If you find yourself in
that circumstance, don't

be a spectator.
Do all you can to make
the fisherman's job easier.
That is part of being a
good first mate.
That was an experience
we will never forget, and I
was happy to be part of it.

It is one thing to hook a
fish of that size, but to
land it on tackle that was
intended to catch no
bigger than a 10- pounder
is a minor miracle. The
knot that attached the line
to the 20-pound Berkley

Flourocarbon leader and
the one tying on the jig
had to be perfect.
The hook portion of the
jig was not meant for that
big an animal and should
have snapped. The gears
in the Shimano could have

seized. Instead, everything
worked. No doubt about it,
my fishing buddy Al
Houser did a masterful
job.

BANKRUPTCY
FROM *450 PLUS COURT FEES
"Bankruptcy is not what you think", states Attorney
Julius Rivera, Jr. If you are having a problem paying your
mortgage or your credit card bills, do not wait until the sit-
uation gets worse. Call Attorney Julius Rivera now for
your free phone or office consultation.
"People who are having credit issues, are usually
relieved when they leave my office", said Mr. Rivera. "No
one should make any arrangements with collectors with-
out consulting an attorney."
He advises people to come in as early as possible
when experiencing problems making mortgage payments
and paying bills. His office will take calls from creditors,
handle any payment arrangements, and if necessary,
make any pre-planning arrangements prior to an actual
filing.
Mr. Rivera has been an attorney for over 20 years.
He offers flexible appointments including weekends.
