interrupted a recent city commis-

It brought news that the Volusia
County School Board had just.
approved adding three grades to
Holly Hill Elementary School, mak-
ing it the county's only Kinder-
garten through eighth grade school.
Mayor Roland Via told meeting
attendees that the school board had
voted to hire an architectural and
engineering firm to design the esti-
mated $14.6 million project, which
had been pending since 2001 when
county voters ok'd raising the sales
tax to fund school construction.
"It's been a long and hard road to
get here but we finally .have
approval to move forward. This is
an exciting day for our city," Mayor
Via said.

City considers new public buildings
By Bill Borden
For Hometown News
HOLLY HILL The City Commis-
sion is embarking on an extensive
development and improvement pro-
gram that will include a new library,
museum and Chamber of Commerce
building, a reconfiguration of Holly-
land Park and the adoption of a Master
Trails plan that could involve a pedes-
trian overpass being built to span U.S.
1.
Dana Smith, representing DJ Design
Services, presented a preliminary
design concept for a multi-use build-
ing that would house the city's library,
the Chamber of Commerce and a
brand new museum. The building
would be located directly behind the
existing Chamber building. At the pre-
vious request of the commission, the
building's exterior design will mirror
the design of the City Hall.
"The new building will be a modern-
ized bookend to the City Hall," Mr.
Smith said. "It will provide continuity
and unite both sides of the street. The
spine of the new building will directly
align with the City Hall."
The new building will also be green.
"The Florida Legislature recently'
enacted a law that all new municipal
buildings must be certified 'Green,' Mr.
Smith said. "We used the L.E.E.D. certi-
fication guidelines to design this build-
ing. There are other standards but you
must weigh how much the added costs
will return savings in the future and
earn State credits."
Mr. Smith said while building.green
may cost more, it pays off over the life
of the building.
"Going green is currently estimated
to cost an additional 6 to 7 percent in
construction but potentially could
save up to 30 percent in utilities and
operating costs," he said.
Commissioners asked the design
team to formulate costs for "different
levels" of going green.
"The commission must review and
evaluate their options for going green
to achieve the best return on invest-
ment," Mayor Via said.
The design team was asked to begin
formulating a cost estimate for its con-
struction based on different levels of
going green.
The Commission .had previously
hired a consultant to seek and identify
grant money to expand and renovate
Hollyland and Centennial Parks. Holly-
land Park adjoins the land where the
new multi-use building will be located,
so the park renovations must be coor-
dinated with the site plan and con-
struction of the new building.
"Parking could become a major
issue wheri multiple events are being
held at the complex so we need to
address that issue now and resolve it,"
Mayor Via said.
Teresa Brooks of Brooks and Dun
Grant Consulting Company said there
are five potential grants available to
fund a new Amphitheater, barbeque
area, multi-use trail, basketball court
and to renovate a coach pitch field.
Commissioner John Penny request-
ed that the Hollyland Park improve-
ments and changes be integrated with
the new building design into a com-
mon plat to see how everything would
flow together.
"I would hate to get into this project
and have a future commission sitting
here 10 years from now and be saying
'why didn't they do this back then?'," he
said. "We only have one shot to get it
right."
Chris Hurst, public works director
for the city, asked the commission to
adopt a Master Trail Plan..With it, staff
can begin developing a design for con-
necting all of the city's parks with trails
under the County's Master Trail Plan
and therefore become eligible for grant
funding to build them.
His request also included hiring DJ
Design to create drawings for a pedes-
trian overpass that would become an
integral part of the trail plan. The com-
mission approved Mr. Hurst's request
with the stipulation that DJ Design
provide them with a 3-D electronic
visual of the overpass to see how it
would integrate with the other projects
already under consideration. Compre-
hensive plans for all of the projects in a
more integrated format are to be pre-
sented to the commission at its next
meeting on May 12.

Who is spending the money
Since the city of Ormond Beach doesn't have any money
to pay the fire fighters, who is responsible for putting all the
caskets along Granada Avenue the pink and white ones
with flowers in them?
What are they going to do with them? Are they going to
bury people in them? This is a waste of money. Somebody
doesn't know what they are doing.
Beachside has great mail carriers
I live on Sandy Drive in Ormond Beach and I have been
reading about the mail carriers in Edgewater. I would like
people to know that the mail carrier Mary, who we have
here in beachside Ormond Beach, is excellent.
She helps people and carries treats for the dogs. She
deserves to hear how great she is. Edgewater doesn't have
the only good mail carriers.
Pond should be fenced for safety
The city of Ormond Beach is going to be in for a lawsuit.
They have a big retention pond, south of River Beach or
in back of the parking lot of the ABC on Atlantic Avenue.
It needs to be fenced in, like they do in Daytona Beach.
Kids play out there. Somebody is going to drown.
People shouldn't take handicapped parking
We are in our late 80s and have a handicapped-parking
permit.
Does the Ormond Beach Police Department check park-
ing lots and restaurants to see if-there are people illegally
parked?
There is supposed to be a $250 fined for illegally parked
cars.
We go out at night and can't find a parking spot.
Yet, people are parking illegally and don't have a sticker
in their window.
I'd appreciate it they would do something about it.
Let drivers listen to music
I have seen two articles now from people complaining
about loud stereos in cars driving down the road.
I can understand someone having a problem with loud
music from a neighbor's house late at night, but why would
a car passing by bother you?
I would rather hear music going by than sirens or con-
struction. I live where the train goes by all hours of the day
and night and blows its whistle when approaching the
crossroads.
You learn to not be affected by it. In fact, I learned to find
it soothing.
Let people enjoy their music while they drive.
License plates are part of freedom of speech
Since when is my freedom of speech, by placing a reli-
gious plate on my car, anyone else's business?
This country still has free speech. There is nothing in the
constitution of the United States that says anything about
separation of church and state.
People should read the constitution for themselves
instead of listening and taking someone else's views. I have
seen many license plates that have offended me such as
"I'm Low life." Is that less offensive than a "Cross or "Jesus
Saves?"
There is always going to be discriminators and frivolous
lawsuits.
I'm tired of people trying to curtail my religious free-
doms.
S In response to 'License plates are
too religious'
Once again ignorance is rearing its ugly head in Florida.
Maybe the state of Florida should be taking a poll on the
amount of ignorant people in this state because I think we
could win the lottery on that one.

Don't cut funding to
tourism marketing
Whether we realize it or
not, we're all in the tourism
business and that's a
good thing.
While my core business
(fire extinguisher sales) is
supported by loyal local
customers, it's the presence
of visitors, and the hotel
properties they patronize,
that keeps the money flow-
ing. .
Visitors have the ability
to move dollars through
the community so every-
one's economic picture
improves.
Florida visitors are more
crucial now than ever, as
they have the ability to
jump start Florida's strug-
gling economy. All we need
to do in order to get the
As to the person who wrote
Ormond Beach Mayor
Fred Costello recently

tion to Father John
Ryan, Pastor of St.
Brendan's Catholic
Church and his parish-
ioners for their out-
standing outreach

process started is get them
here, and that's where we
need to work together.
The state's tourism mar-
keting corporation, Visit
Florida, works with local
partners to entice visitors
to Florida. Through that
partnering, local partners
(including convention and
visitors bureaus, attrac-
tions, restaurants and
hotels) can leverage their
small budgets via bulk
media buys, co-op adver-
tising opportunities and
other valuable programs
that would otherwise be
cost prohibitive. Partnering
helps us all to get the word
out, and it gets results.
And local tourism mar-
keting efforts are funded
entirely by visitors' bed tax
collections and not by
residents.
Visit Florida needs and
about the religious license
plates, please let me try to help this one.
While I am not a deeply religious person, I do believe that
we have a right to express our feelings no matter what oth-
ers think of them.
You have the right to choose the plate you want on your
car. How is choosing to have or hot have a religious plate an
issue? Are we next going to complain about the bumper
stickers that people put on their cars then, the Tashirt saying
that people wear? How about what tattoos people choose to
put on their body? How about the length of fake fingernails?
If you don't like the religious plates don't purchase them..
It is your choice. What makes you think you have the right
to choose what someone else wants to put on his or her car?
You want separation of church and state and you want to
be a dictator? Maybe you are in the wrong country.
Government doesn't own my car
I would like to point out the state does not own my car,
and I have the right to display a religious license plate, if I
wish to do so.
It is my way of protesting the government-imposed reli-
gion of atheism.
In response to 'Vehicle inspections
could raise money'
We do need vehicle inspections in this state.
You would not believe the dangerous junk that fills our
roadways.
Government getting into our lives via inspections is
ridiculous.
It has nothing to do with creeping into our privacy.
I spent many years in the automotive field, and I saw
some of the most dangerous vehicles with parts worn,
hanging off, bald tires etc., that were completely ignored by
the owners.
Many of these people could afford the repairs, they just
did not want to spend the money.
Even today, I can sit at any red light and see bald tires on
cars or trucks that travel on the interstate at 75 mph. In the
70s and earlier, Florida had annual vehicle inspections, but
the way it was handled was a joke.
If an annual state vehicle inspection were imposed and
managed correctly, our roads would be much safer than
they are today. I would be curious to see statistics as to how
many accidents in the state of Florida are caused by faulty
equipment.
Government is not necessarily the answer
I want to congratulate the person who suggested Florida
begin inspecting vehicles.
Next will be ridiculous emissions fees, emissions stations
and long lines of idling vehicles further polluting the air-
ways.
This person is obviously a socialist who thinks that bigger
government and state spending are the right route out of
the forest of despair.
deserves state dollars, now
more than ever. It's not a
giveaway, by any means.
Funding Visit Florida con-
tinues to be an excellent
investment in Florida's
economic development
efforts.
Current efforts are afoot
to reduce Visit Florida's
funding level, which will
have negative effects on.
both state and local visitor
counts. That. affects my
business, and it'll affect
you, too.
Research shows that for
each $1 invested in tourism
marketing, at least $3 is
returned to the state in
much-needed, tourism-
related taxes.
In 2007 alone, tourism
generated $65.5 billion in
direct economic impact.
At a time when every
state is competing to lure
the traveling consumer, not
to mention high-dollar
meetings and conventions,
cuts as proposed could set
our state back years.
There's no shortage of
excellent causes that are
vying for Florida lawmak-
ers' attention right now in
Tallahassee, but tourism
marketing is one invest-
ment that will produce the
bed taxes, the sales taxes,
the jobs and the economic
impact that Florida needs
.to survive and thrive.
Investing in tourism
marketing is truly an
investment in Florida's
future, in Volusia County,
and .in our business com-
munity as a whole.
Bob Davis
Hotel .& Lodging Associa-
tion ofVolusia County
Please go back to New England, California or wherever
you came from.
I like it here in Florida just the way it is.
Religious plates are an option
I don't see how the writer sees discrimination or lawsuits
regarding the new religious based plates.
The state of Florida is not forcing anyone to have-the
plates, just making the plates available to people like me
who would love to have one.
There are other states who have them now.
I thought this was a free country.
If you want one, buy it. If not, don't. It's as simple as that.
Try the knuckle bump
One of the things that could help prevent the spread of
infections is to stop handshakes. The knuckle touch
(bump) is a great substitute and is a way to have infection
control.
Everywhere you go people shake hands, spreading germs.
Ever since being on a cruise last year where the captain
ordered no more handshakes because of an outbreak of a
virus, I have been on a crusade. That ship's captain suggest-
ed "elbow touching" or "knuckle bumping" as your greeting
to others, for infection control.
With the Swine Flu spreading, why don't you give it a try
for infection control? Do you remember when Michele
Obama and president Barack Obama gave each other a
knuckle bump for their greeting?
Think about it this way, if someone is sick and they shake
your hand, you have more of a chance for catching what
they have and becoming infected.
Sure, everybody is using hand sanitizers, but the best way
is to wash your hands with friction when ever possible.
All these things can make us healthier. Try the
knuckle touch or bump, it could help you to stay healthier.
Keep the crossword in the paper
I have truly enjoyed the Hometown News since it first
came out. Most of all was the wonderful crossword puzzle, a
friendly challenge for the day's end. As time went on this
wonderful puzzle continued to get smaller and smaller,
which for older eyes is very cumbersome.
Eventually, it became so small that I discontinued looking
for it.
However, today before I began to write this, I looked in
Friday's Hometown News for the puzzle, the index stated
page B8. -,
This puzzle must have gotten really smaller as I can't find
it.
Aside from the massive advertising, which I understand
helps this paper to be free, the puzzle, I'm sure is most
enjoyable to a majority of people.
Please have it in the paper when it's in the index, and
make the print larger so that "puzzle people" can enjoy it.
.Thank you and please consider the above request, quite a
few people have stated the same thought.

accepted by Donald Meyer, president;
Joseph .Berger, vice president; and
Dean Bazzle, commercial field manag-
er.
'Mr. Meyer said he was proud of all
the company's accomplishments
through the years, and that this award
is "probably in the top two or three that
we have received in the past."
It is an important award because it
was actually.based on our work ethics
and the quality of the work that we did,
he said. "The Weitz Company deals
with (climate control) companies all
over Florida but chose us to receive this
great award."
The award was given for the compa-
ny's work on Satellite Beach High
School. Project Manager Jack Smith
said D.G. Meyer was asked to bid on the
project, which included "about seven
buildings on the campus." New climate

Meyer said. "Due to the recession and
competitiveness of the market, we are
giving local residents the lowest prices
possible while keeping the highest
quality products and service."
D.G. Meyer has won many awards
through the years, including the Carrier

Dr. David Turetsky treated Steven Yaworski's rare illness with procedures available only at Halifax Health.
What started as a weeklong headache became a life and death experience for Steven Yaworski. After paIliiig out at. I.lIC andl
being rushed to Halifax Health, he awoke six days later in the care of Dr. David Turetsky, one of only 300 nmiliI rinii-i -ietionlal
radiologists in the United States. By that time, Dr. Turetsky had already diagnosed Steven with dural sinus thro boi .l \ I) rai c
condition causing blockages in the brain with characteristics similar to a stroke. So he wasted no time in taking action m.tiing
Steven immediately with several complex, life-saving techniques. "He's just a phenomenal doctor,I; Steven says of Dr. Turetsky.
He also thanks his 16 year-old son, whose 911 call ensured that he made it to Halifax Health quickly. Considering he ended up
being treated by the region's leading neuroscience program and the only neurointerventional radiologist in the area, S.I\1. n says he
probably wouldn't be here today if the ambulance hadn't brought him to Halifax Health. "It's funny; I'm not the one who decided to
go to Halifax Health but it was definitely the best decision of my life."

VOLUSIA COUNTY -
"Hell's Kitchen" may be
great television entertain-
ment, but it's not reality
when it comes to teaching
up-and-coming chefs, says
a top local culinary educa-
tor.
Chef David Weir was
recently named the 2009
American Culinary Federa-
tion Southeast Region Chef
Educator of the Year.
With more than 25 years
of culinary experience, he is
now associate professor at
the Daytona State College
Hosseini Colkge ofiMbospi-
tality and Culinary Man-
agement.
The award pays tribute to
his knowledge, skills and
expertise as a culinary edu-
cator.
"It's a very humbling
experience to be recog-
nized like that as a teacher,"
Chef Weir said. "For the
most part, I don't do what I
do to win awards; I do what
I do to benefit the stu-
dents.",,,
Until recently, he taught a
full load of classes while
assuming the responsibili-
ties of interim chair of fac-
ulty, until that position was
filled.
As one of four regional
winners nationwide, he will
advance to the ACFs
national competition in
July.
On a recent morning the
college's teaching kitchen
bore no resemblance to the
popular "Hells Kitchen" TV
series.
It was a well-oiled
machine of dozens of stu-
dents cooking, baking and
prepping for lunch service
at the student-run Caf6 101,
under the, supervision of
chef instructors.
Chef Weir says he watch-
es the popular TV series
featuring Chef Gordon
Ramsay, and this season,
New Smyrna Beach Chef
Danny Veltri, because he
knows his students %a atch
it.
While he respects Chef
Ramsay's :standards. he said
there's no need for the high
level of drama.
Chef Weir's own love of
cuisine began early.
"I started cooking when I
was 13 years old," he said. "I
grew up working in an Ital-
ian restaurant across the
street (from his home).

chief Beres could actually
see the smoke drifting
through a streetlight, but he
couldn't see any flames.
Deputy chief Beres circled
the block again and
decided to work door to
door to see if indeed, a
house was on fire. As he
approached Dean
Sweeney's home, he saw
the flames and heard the 60
year old yelling for help. He
called the fire n, then tried
to get to the victim through
several different doors, but
the smoke was dangerously
thick. Finally it cleared
enough for deputy chief
Beres' colleagues to get to
Sweeney and pull him out.
He suffered second-degree
burns over 80 percent of his
body and later died at
Orlando Regional Medical
Center after being flown to
the burn unit. Deputy chief
Beres is sad at the loss of
life, but neighbors are
grateful police risked their
own lives to try and save
Mr. Sweeney. Deputy chief
Beres says he and his
officers are not profession-
als, but with someone's life
at stake, they had to act fast
because they were first on
scene. Several days later,
two police officers had to
be treated for smoke
inhalation at the scene of
another house fire when
they worried someone was
inside. As it turned out, in
that instance, the house
.was empty.
Counterfeiting is on
the rise
It may be the economy, it
may just be opportunity,
but police say counterfeit
cash is circulating in our
area in increasingly alarm-
ing amounts. Daytona
Beach police said they have
had several dozen reports
from businesses that have
unknowingly taken in
counterfeit cash. Business
owners said they regularly
train employees on what to
look for and most use
detection pens to ensure
the cash is good, but even
so, thousands of dollars in
bogus bills slip through
amounting to steep losses.
All bills bigger than two-
dollar bills have a water-
mark that matches the
president's portrait and a
security thread running
vertically through the bill.
If you hold the bill up to
the light, you should see
those on a real bill.
Beware of bank scam
Volusia County Sheriff's
Deputies are investigating
a phone scam that has
already targeted two
people near Ormond
Beach. In one instance, a
woman withdrew nearly
$7,000 from her bank
account and brought it to
the parking lot of the city
library as instructed. The
caller told the woman he
was investigating employee
thefts from accounts where
there had been a recent
death. The woman told the
caller she had lost her
husband and had received
significant insurance
money. She agreed to help
catch the thieves by
bringing cash. Luckily, the
caller didn't show and the
woman still has her cash. A
second person got a similar
call, but alerted authorities
right away. Deputies warn
citizens that banks don't
operate that way and say
they should never give
money or personal account
information to anyone
calling them for coopera-
tion.

Florida with a bachelor's
degree in business adminis-
tration before attending The
Restaurant School in
Philadelphia, Pa.
"When I was a junior in
college I realized the corpo-
rate business world was not
for me," he said.
Enrolling in the culinary
school fulfilled a long-time
dream.
He later completed a mas-
ter's degree in business
administration from Bel-
haven College in Jackson,
Miss., so that he could effec-
tively manage the business
side of the culinary industry.
Before joining DSC he
worked as an instructor,
executive chef and compli-
ance director for the Orlan-
do Culinary Academy/Le
Cordon Bleu in Orlando.
Teaching is a skill required
even by chefs working in a
restaurant, he said.
"Every chef, in essence, is
a teacher, they have to be,"
he said. "Working in the
kitchen, they constantly
have to train their staff."
As a faculty member,
however, he appreciates
being able to focus on
developing students.
"To me, it's really reward-
ing to see that develop-
ment," Chef Weir said. "We
bring them up from scratch
all the way up to the higher
level skills."
DSC offers four associate
of applied science degrees
including culinary, food and
beverage, lodging and event
planning management.
In addition, an associate
of science degree is offered
in hospitality management.
"Our major focus is to
train (students) to be at, or
slightly above, an entry level
position in the industry," he
said.
Students like Jamie Mey-
ers who have previous expe-
rience in the industry can
expect to start at a higher
level, he said.
Mr. Meyers, 25, who has
worked as a kitchen man-
ager and executive chef at a
local restaurant, hopes his
degree will eventually land
him an executive chef posi-
tion.
"We have a good pro-
gram here," the Daytona
Beach resident said. "We
have a nice building, mod-
ern facilities and the teach-
ers here are great."

based education coupled
with academics.
"As the program is devel-
oping," he said, "it's on the
caliber of some of the top
culinary schools in the
country."

Sticking to my promise
to find more unique
musical adventures at this
year's Daytona Beach

attended "Salsa under the

Luckily, neither disap-

Tiempo Libre, a Latin

crowd moving at the Plaza

While I wished I had
paid more attention in my
high school Spanish class
to better understand the
lyrics, I couldn't deny their
great beats and rhythms.
The seven-person band
put together an energetic
show that kept the audi-
ence shaking their hips on
the crowded dance floor.
The Bluegrass Bash, held
at Destination Daytona,
was at the other end of the
musical spectrum.
The Bash featured three
different musical acts
featuring bluegrass, folk
and country music.
While I had never
encountered any of the
acts featured, including
Ralph Stanley and the
Lovell Sisters Band, I
admired their obvious
passion for the music and
performance.
Each of the shows I
attended was either sold
out or close to it, which I
was happy to see.
I think it's obvious that
the Daytona Beach area
understands the impor-
tance of having such
world-class entertainers in

I've grown to love a lot

throughout the day. "I give
thanks daily for the spirit of
life that lives within, nurtures
and sustains me. I have all
that I need to heal, balance
and sustain a rich, full life. I
affirm positive expectations
and positive results are my
reward. All is well."
Libra-Sept 23-Oct 22
No matter what your mood
and attitude is upon awaken-
ing, you continue to find new
blessings each day of peace,
love, abundance and joy. All
these gifts continue to give
you gratitude for your won-
derful life and insure balance.
Your heart literally signs with
gladness for all you have
been given. What a great life.
Scorpio-Oct. 23-Nov. 21
When you love what you do
the financial rewards are
increased. Why? Because Like
attracts like in the universe.
The moral? Put more effort
into the things you love and
less on things you do not.
Your power of judgment is
strong. Be sure to limit your
choices. A daily renewal of
the major goals will help
keep this focus and forward
momentum.
Sagittarius-Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Your strong family and friend-
ship ties are your greatest
assets in life. Your old-fash-
ioned values, combined with
a sense of current trends, are
major assets, as well. You
refuse to let the world pull
you too far off course. This
strong focused direction has
carried you safely thus far and
will continue to guide you.
Capricorn-Dec. 22-Jan. 19
There is much new change
and growth going on around
you right now. How do you
stay on top of it? The only
way I know is to make a
written commitment of your
dreams and speak them out
loud every day. Now this
vibration goes to work and
gives you insight when you
begin to veer off course.
Eureka! You have your own
built-in radar.
Aquarius-Jan. 20-Feb. 18
Every night before sleep, fig-
ure out the three most
important issues you need
to address tomorrow. Ask
the universe to give you the
right answers when you
awake. Now, sleep soundly
knowing that you have uni-
versal help and protection.
Now tomorrow will be a
successful day, filled with
many new adventures, just
right for a positive Aquarian
like you.
Pisces-Feb. 19-March 20
You are at a time of expan-
sion. Many new ideas are tak-
ing root and beginning to
grow. Spring is a good and
fertile time for you. Refuse to
worry about the future. When
it gets here it is today. Today
is all we have. Make the most
of each day and the universe

Neurologist Recommends
Chiropractic for Migraine!
Kerry, a 41 year old NSB resident, has suffered from migraines for
10 years. Her Internist tried different treatments then referred her to
a local Neurologist. The Neurologist also tried different medications
after MRI's and CAT scans. The Neurologist was also not able to
help this patient and referred her to Chiropractic for help..
The benefits of Chiropractic with Migraine patients have been
,,documented for years. Stimulating the nervous system and
unlocking inflamed joints in your spine are crucial to
reducing the frequency df headaches and Migraines.

Enough tranquil Get A "REAL" Stimulus Package
l m-tfv_ lpl find
some 'ladies'
A t times fishing may
be a very tranquil
endeavor.
Spending the day on the
water without the inter-
ruption of any fish bites
can make for a very
relaxing day.
Not long ago, fishing
buddy Al Houser and I
decided we had experi-
enced about all of the
tranquility that we could
handle and headed down
to Port Orange for some
jack fishing.
i Each spring the jacks
school up in the mouth of
Miller's Creek and will hit
just about anything that
moves.
We felt this might be the
perfect antidote for two or
three relaxing trips in a
row.
Sometimes you just
need to have your line
stretched and if all we
could find was jacks to do,
that, well, we were not
above it.
So there we were at
dawn sliding my little
Carolina skiff into the
water under the big

slender rocket of a preda-
tor that are about as
acrobatic as any fish that
swims.
Their meat is soft and
bony and they are of little
food value, which guaran-
tees that there will always
be a healthy fishery.
Down through the years,
I have always valued my
frequent encounter with
the wildly jumping lady-
fish, but this day would be
my best ever.
So thick were they that a
pod of feeding dolphins
could not chase them
away.
I am not sure how many
we caught, but it was
probably about half of
those that we hooked.
They jumped into the side
of the boat and into the
engine and it was a
miracle that Al and I
escaped the flying hooks

we hooked. They jumped into the side of
the boat and into the engine and it was a
miracle that Al and I escaped the flying

'to make the two-mile run
down to the creek.
As I pointed out in a
recent column, you must
be able to read the water
'o be a successful fisher-
man.
It was a beautiful calm
morning and about 300
yards fiom the ramp I
.noticed nervouss water."
I cut the engine and on
,Al's first cast his little red
and white Mann Plug had
no sooner hit the water
when it shot into the air in
,the mouth of a thirty inch
]adyfish. Wow. I grabbed
up my own red and white
.Mirro Lure and cast at
about a 45-degree angle to
,his, and I was quickly
hooked up to a two-foot
jady.
SThe fish both began tail
walking and criss-crossed
giving us fits for a bit, but
we were able to land and
release both.
SThat double hook-up
would be repeated count-
less times.
The both of us spent the
Snext two hours either
fighting, netting, unhook-
ing or releasing fish.
If you are not familiar
with.ladyfish, they are a
ourselves. :
The dolphins were all
around.the boat and
worked themselves into
such a frenzy that at one
point one breached with
another riding on its back.
After agreeing that our
arms were now tired and
our rods pei manentl)
bowed, we moved off.
down the river to cast for
reds. After an hour and a
half vithout a strike, I gave
a wink and said I know
where we can put an end
to all this relaxation. Al
laughed and nodded
agreement.
Within minutes we were
back in the midst of the
ladyfish laughing and
shouting as though we had
never left. We never did
find the jacks we came
looking for that day, but
two dates with the beauti-
ful Port Orange ladyfish
was just about perfect.
