HOLLY HILL As the saying
goes, when one, door closes another
one opens.
That's the case with the police
substation on the south side of the
city, which will close at the end of
April after less than a year in opera-
tion to cut costs.
The officers who worked out of
the substation will instead move
into a new office space inside the
police department at city hall. And
residents and business owners on
the south side just may get another
shot at having the police camped
out in their neighborhood.
Next month the city commission
will consider opening
a smaller substation,
just larger than a
kiosk, in the area,
city manager Tim
Harbuck said.

Fort Pierce Editor's note:
This is a statement from River-
side National Bank regarding
last week's closing of Riverside
Bank of the Gulf Coast:
"There are several banks in
Florida that have the word'
'Riverside' in their names. Each
of the banks is independently
owned and operated. Each
operates in separate geographi-
cal areas of the state through
separate branches and other
facilities, and each has separate
charters, separate employees
and management teams, and
separate boards of directors -
even different products and
services.
One of these banks River-
side Bank of the Gulf Coast
based in Cape Coral was
recently closed by regulators.
Riverside National Bank is
based in Fort Pierce and has
NOT closed. Customers of
Riverside National Bank will not
be affected by the closure of a
completely different bank."
Additional facts about
Riverside National Bank
Riverside National Bank was
founded in September 1982 by
Vernon Smith together with cer-
tain St. Lucie County communi-
ty leaders. Riverside National
Bank is based in Fort Pierce and
has 60 branches in 10 counties
throughout the Treasure Coast,
Space Coast and Heartland
regions of Florida (St. Lucie, Bre-
vard, Indian River, Okeechobee,
Martin, Palm Beach, Polk, Volu-
,sia, Highlands and Lake River-
side Bank of the Gulf Coast does
not operate in any of these
counties). Riverside National
Bank has assets of approximate-
ly $3.8 billion.
Riverside National Bank is a
completely separate and differ-
ent legal entity which operates
under a federal charter issued by
the U.S. Comptroller of the Cur-
rency ("OCC"). Riverside
National Bank is primarily regu-
lated by the OCC.
Because the banks operate in
different geographical areas of
the state, very few customers of
Riverside National Bank are
believed to be customers of
Riverside Bank of the Gulf Coast.
Customers sometimes have
accounts or loans with multiple
banks, but any overlap of cus-
tomers is believed to be nominal
and no greater than with other
banks located'in Florida.

Police foundation raises
funds for training
Will sell stickers, pavers this weekend
By Bethany Chambers

DAYTONA BEACH Behind the
men and women in blue stands
another group, and its goal is green.
The Daytona Beach Police Foun-
dation, created 18 months ago by
Chief Mike Chitwodd, raised
$80,000 in 2008 to pay for equip-
ment for the department and to
send officers to training and college
programs.
In addition to donations, the
foundation is also fundraising by
selling foundation support stickers
for cars and businesses and
inscribed brick pavers to be placed
in front of the new police head-
quarters at 129 Valor Blvd.
Stickers cost $25 and pavers cost
$100. Both will be on sale thiA week-
end at the police station's public
grand opening ceremony from
noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.
So far the foundation has used
funds to purchase the crime lab
equipment for DNA testing and has
purchased bicycles and computer
programs that were not covered by
the city's general budget.
The DNA testing equipment was
recently used to identify one serial
burglar who had broken into
dozens of cars and homes in the
city, said foundation chairman Bob
Davis.
"One DNA test led to 40 solved
crimes," he said.
The foundation has also sent 44
police officers to state and national
training programs and to under-
graduate and graduate programs at
Daytona State College, the Univer-
sity of Central Florida, Keiser Uni-
versity and Bethune-Cookman
University. Colleges have also pro-
vided $140,000 in scholarships to
ensure the cost of the officers' edu-
cation is covered fully.
Mr. Davis said he hopes the pro-
gram can be expanded in the future
to help officers from police depart-
ments in neighboring cities.
"Our goal is to have this be not
just for Daytona Beach, but for all
law enforcement officers in Volusia
County," he said.

One day later, Ms. Griffin
sat in a rocking chair in the
specialty unit, cradling her
newborn, grateful that Kan-
dise didn't seem to have any
significant medical prob-
lems.
"They are just keeping an
eye on her," she said. "Yester-
day she was having a little bit
of trouble breathing."
The locally-based NICU
provides expectant and new
moms the peace of mind
that, should the need arise,
specialty care is available
around the clock, said
Catherine Privett, RN, man-
ager of the Center forWoman
and Infant Health.
Halifax Health officials
recently announced that
neonatologists Peter G.
Taves, M.D. and Deborah A.
Donlon, M.D. from the Uni-
versity of Florida College of
Medicine at Jacksonville will
provide management and
patient care for the 13-bed
unit.
The pair will fill the shoes
of former medical director
Dr. Yick Bong AuYeung, 61,
who -died last year after more
than 30 years at Halifax
Health.
The hospital delivers more
than 2,000 babies per year,
Ms. Privett said, and histori-
cally 10-percent need spe-
cialized care.
Recently the hospital has
seen an increase in admis-
sions, she said.
This month, within a peri-
od of one week, a set of
triplets and four sets of twins
were admitted.
Dr. Donlon, who received
her medical degree from the
University of New York in
1981 and completed her fel-
lowship in neonatology at
the University of North Car-

the recipient of many awards
including Physician of the
Year-Florida Healthy Moth-
ers.
"I really enjoy working
with a baby, often from start
to finish, who presents some
real challenges," she said.
Working with t the family
through that critical process
and watching a healthy baby
emerge gives her great satis-
faction, Dr. Donlon said.
As a level II NICU, the hos-

"The nurses here are really
excellent," Dr. Donlon said.
One of those specialty
nurses is Chris Falconnier,
RN, who has' worked in the
NICU for 26 years, 22 of them
at Halifax.
"It's all I've ever done," Ms.
Falconnier said.
During a recent 12-hour
shift she was caring for
triplets.
Upbeat and cheerful, she
explained why she loves her
job as she cared for a preemie
in a specialty bassinet that
resembled a space-age plastic
container with access ports.
"Imagine getting to hold
babies all day long," she said.'
The veteran nurse offered
her best recommendation for
the care at Halifax Health.
"If I was having a preemie,
Ms. Falconnier said, "this is
where I would be."
Dr. Taves, who will rotate
coverage of the unit with Dr.
Donlon, received his medical
degree from Universite de
Marseille Aix in Marseille,
France in 1981 and complet-
ed his neonatology fellowship
at All Children's Hospital in St.
Petersburg, Fla.
Meanwhile, Ms. Griffin was
hoping to take her newborn
daughter home soon.

healthy that's all I can ask

Q: What is a second cataract?
A: At the time of cataract surgery, an implant
is put into the eye. This implant sits in what is
referred to as a "sack". Over time, the "sack"
can develop a cloudiness. This will blur the
, person's vision much like a cataract did. The'
patient will then have a procedure called
a YAG that removes the central portion
of the "sack" allowing clear vision

ices there and it's important
to continue providing that,"
he said.
The city commission
voted 3-2 to close the substa-
tion, which opened at 240
Ridgewood Avenue in June to
increase police presence in a
part of the city both citizens
and officials said needed it.
The city is paying $1,000 a
month in rent and $1,000 in
other operating expenses
from its community redevel-
opment area funds to keep
the building .open. Police
officers who are part of the
special response team store
their bikes in the building
ind hold business watch
tion approval. Mr. Cheney
said he anticipates the proj-
ect will require about 350
construction workers.
Such a project would typi-
cally take one to two years,
Mr. Cheney said. There is no
project schedule set yet.
Currently Dunn Avenue,
which starts where George
Engram Boulevard ends
near the intersection at
Clyde Morris Boulevard, is
dotted with apartment arid
townhome communities,
medical offices and nursing
homes.
Because most are setback
from the road, residents said
they weren't concerned
about increased through-
traffic.
"It's not really going to be
meetings there.
They cannot, however, file
reports from the substation
because it is not wired to a
secure computer network.
To keep the substation
open, the city would have had
to invest $3,000 to upgrade
the system and an additional
$600 a month in upkeep,
Police Chief Mark Barker said.
Chief Barker said several
factors contributed to a
decrease in crime in the city,
including the addition of the
business watch and a com-
munity relations officer posi-
tion.
That fact convinced some
commissioners to vote for the
closing.
"It's the officers, not the
building;"' Conmmissioner Liz
Towsley said.
The substatioxriis.not open
a problem," said Rui Jacinto,
who has lived in an apart-
ment on the road for a year.
Homeowner Mabel Wood
agreed, saying construction
wouldn't bother her, either,
because "it's not too close."
"I think we can handle it,"
she said.
Others, though, said they
were more concerned about
what the project might sig-
nal.
Although "there are no
immediate plans to widen
Dunn," a four-laning project
would probably happen "in
10 to 20 years," Mr. McK-
itrick said, depending on
funding.
That raised the eyebrows
of Donna Perry, assistant
manager at Lake Forest
24 hours a day and has
received limited walk-ins,
many of them people who
have mistaken the address for
the nearby probation office,
said Chief Barker.,
"It's truly been an asset to us
in terms of a presence in that
area, but it's only been limited
to .that presence," he told the
commission. "If the decision
is made to close the substa-
tion, it's not going to adversely
affect our operations."
The redevelopment area's
advisory board, however,
opposed closing the substa-
tion, which they had fought to
have opened.
"Why take something suc-
cessful and change it?" asked
business owner Steve Tyler,
chairman of the board. "
Mayor Roland Via agreed.
"That's government at its
Randy Barber

apartments.
"Widening the road might
make it less secluded," she
said. "It might not be my lit-
tle quiet place in the woods
anymore."
Next door, at Wood Forest
apartments, manager
Anthony Sisco said he had
been hearing about the
project for years since the
last time Dunn was extend-
ed west, past Palm Terrace
Elementary to Williamson.
'As long as they're not
doing a ramp onto 95,1 I don't
see this making a big differ-
ence," he said. "Traffic at our
(Dunn Avenue) entrance
might be busier, but it might
also help our residents (go
west easier)."
best, when we take a program
that works and abolish it," he
said sarcastically.
Instead the city will spend
about $25,000 over the next
couple months, renovating
the city's old jail space into a
new office for special
response team officers.
Officials will also look at
putting in the smaller substa-
tion somewhere near the cur-
rent one. The prefabricated
building would cost about
$5,000. If approved, Mr. Har-
buck said the city would try to
get a property owner to
donate land and the city could
use CRA grants to landscape
the building.
"We might find someone
willing to welcome us," he
said. "If I was a business or
property owner, I would like
that."

Stevens Tire a Main Seet staple
By Bethany Chambers
bchambers@hometownnewsol.com
DAYTONA BEACH -
Stevens Tire & Auto has
been fixing (and pimping)
tires, wheels pretty much
anything under the car -
on Main Street here since
the 1960s. And owner John
Tamborino says he intends
for it to stay that way,
despite trying economic
times.
"Nobody's got the money
to put into custom work
anymore. Where people
used to drop $10,000 on it,
they're cutting back," he
said. "We're changing our
model to sell more econom-
ical tires to help our cus-
tomers."
Acting as this city's home-
team pit crew since founder
Red Stevens opened his first
location in 1966, Stevens has
built a core clientele of
locals looking for a local
company to support in a
business where big names
and corporate culture
abound.
"We. have better service
than the large places. People
know us well enough to
come down here and say,
'Fix what needs to be fixed.'
They trust us. They know
they won't be pressured and
they won't have to call a 1-
800 number," Mr. Tambori-
no said. "We have a small-
town feeling, but with a
bigger selection and better
service than the chain
stores."
Not having a corporate
affiliation allows Stevens to
sell a variety of tires,
although Bridgestone, Day-
ton, Firestone and BF
Goodrich are still the most
popular, he said. Altogether
the business sells about
10,000 tires a year, Mr. Tam-
borino said.
Stevens also offers several
services, including work on
brakes, shots, struts, sus-
pensions and axels, in addi-
tion to custom wheelwork,
alignments and oil changes.
Mr. Tamborino, a New
York native who graduated
from Embry-Riddle Aero-
nautical University, bought
the business from Mr.
Stevens when he retired in
2001.
Although Mr. Tamborino

& Auto, on Main Street. The business has been in the city

had a degree in aviation
maintenance administra-
tion, after graduating in
1991 he wanted to stay in
Daytona Beach near his
wife's family, so he got a job
at Stevens as an alignment
technician. He worked his
way up to manager.
"My passion has always
been mechanical stuff. I've
worked in every single posi-
tion here," he said. "I didn't
want Red to sell to a chain
store."
Applying for small busi-
ness loans was "a lot of
paperwork ... like buying a
house," but it was worth it,
he said.
As the economy has fal-
tered, Mr. Tamborino has
kept his promise to keep his
five full-time employees and
one part-time employee on.
He's had to cut hours, but
his main goal has been to
keep his staff, who are "like
family," intact.
"I'm looking at the same
customers we've had five,
seven, 10 years ago, which is
nice. Many of our employ-
ees go back that far, too," he
said. "We have a relation-
ship with our customers."
Keeping up those rela-
tionships as a small busi-
ness owner means putting
in the hours pretty much
9 a.m. to 7 p.m. six days a
week, Mr. Tamborino said.
"I never come in on Sun-
day. It's family day. I make
the most of it with my wife
and kids," the father of two
sons, ages 4 and 8, said. "We
like to go to Disney and see
movies."
Outside of the daily rigors
of entrepreneurship from
paying bills to setting up
appointments Mr. Tam-
borino is also involved in
the Main Street Merchants
Association, Daytona Beach
Rotary Club and several
other professional and com-
munity groups.
It's all part of being a good
citizen of the city he now
calls home, he said.
"I like helping and being
involved in the community,'
he said. "It's about making a
difference and supporting
each others' businesses."

Historic trees featured in publication
Recently, the historic oak trees at Daytona Beach City
Hall were featured in the January 2009 edition of "Tree Care
Industry Magazine," the national publication for the Tree
Care Industry Association. In the article "Cabling and Con-
sulting: Connections for Safer City Trees," author Guy
Meilleur writes: "It is important to point out that the city
Beautification/Tree Advisory Board (BTAB) did due dili-
gence for these trees on behalf of the City Commission and
that nationally-recognized arborists became involved and
offered pro-bono consulting assistance and expertise,
which is now a case-book example for other consulting
arborists in the field to follow."
Slow drivers problem all year
Last year, there were several rants about everyone in the,
left lane, usually under the speed limit, and not moving into
the open right lane. Come October, November, December,
it was blamed on the snowbirds. I am sorry to say the prob-
lem is here 365 days a year and the snowbirds are not. So
yes, it is a Floridian problem that should be solved because
it is really out of control. That's why a law was passed two
years ago, but I have not seen it being enforced. Pass and
move to the right and maintain the speed.
Congress should not take pay raise
I am wondering if I am the only person who is outraged
by the fact that Congress prior to President Bush leaving
office voted themselves a pay raise. Here we are in a reces-
sion. People are loosing their homes. Schools are having to
cut out important items, Unemployment is at an all-time
high, and Congress voted themselves a pay raise. Every sin-
gle person should be writing their congressman and
demand that they return their pay raise until they take the
time to do their job. Isn't a pay raise normally given
because of doing a good job? If they have beert doing such
a good jdb, then x hy are we in such a financial mess?
People who torture animals should be fined

Americans need to ban together
We need to create jobs for Americans directly. Tax cuts
indirectly create jobs and far fewer at that. Some of the tax
savings typically goes' to pay off loans, some to savings,
some to purchase foreign made goods and the rest (whatev-
er is left over) goes towards American made goods and serv-
ices.
If we are going to take an additional hit to the deficit and
national debt for yet another stimulus package, then we
need to create jobs for Americans, not the Chinese.
It is high time that Americans band together and take care
of each other instead of tearing each other apart like a pack
of rabid wild dogs. "United we stand. Divided we fall."
In response to the 'Cigarette tax increase
could bring in much needed funds'
I'm glad you are not a smoker, but many people are. In
case you don't keep up on current prices, a carton of Basic's
on sale is $26.95. How much more can one afford?
The people that need:big screen, TV's, cars more than
$30,000, and other don't-really-need items should go up in
price instead.
A smoker has an addiction that is not easy to break.
Should diabetics and people with handicaps pay more for
what they need because they are dependant on things that
other people are not?
Think before you claim to have the solution. Unless you
are involved, stay out of it.
Traffic lights need to be timed better
It has been my observation after driving on Dunlawton
Avenue for the past several years that the traffic lights on
this main thoroughfare do not take precedence over the
many much less traveled streets that intersect with Dunlaw-
ton Avenue.
As the gateway to the beaches, and the only route to Inter-
state 95 in Port Orange, I would think that a vehicle pulling
up to a stoplight on an intersecting street wouldn't cause the
light to change on Dunlawton.
I often stop, along with a large group of cars, at nearly
every light from U.S. 1 to Interstate 95. I would like to see
the traffic lights timed better on Dunlawton Avenue, so that
you can travel at the posted speed and the majority of the
lights should be green, or have someone explain to us Why
they can't be timed differently.
President Bush should be saluted
President Bush did a superlative job during the most diffi-
cult of times.
Sept. 11 was a wake up call, and the country was united.

From page Al
Smith Jr., already in jail in
Flagler County, faces the
same new charges. Flagler
officials found dozens of
images of child pornogra-
phy in Smith's Palm Coast
home in late December and
believe the images were of
local children, taken when
the Smiths operated a Holly
Hill photo studio. The new
charges are based on evi-
dence that Smith and his
daughter engaged in sex
together at the studio.
Police said part of the evi-
dence against the father
and daughter includes a
graphic videotape.
Suspect turns himself
in to police
A man accused of rape
and kidnapping in Daytona
Beach, but mistakenly
released from jail last
November, turned himself
in to police. Zarkee Ses-
sions, 26, came forward
after publicity about the
paperwork problem that
led to his release surfaced.
DNA linked Sessions to the
2005 assault and while serv-
ing time in another county;
he was charged and booked
into the Volusia County jail.
Sessions was released on
his own recognizance by
law after 33 days, because it
appeared prosecutors did-
n't file formal charges. They
had, but neither the clerk's
office nor the jail had that
information.
Hit-and-run
driver found
Police in Holly Hill said
they've found the driver
involved in a deadly hit and
run accident Feb. 1. Timo-
thy Ward, 51, was either
crossing or walking along
Nova Road near Fourth
Street. He was found dead
in the shoulder of the road.

The Democrats could not have a popular Republican presi-
dent, so the praise did not last long. "He lied," became the
catch phrase of the day.
No matter that all the politicians, even Hillary Clinton,
were looking at the same intelligence reports. And so, Con-
gress gave President Bush the authorization to go to war.
Then suddenly, all the Democrats developed amnesia and
President Bush was to blame. There are those of us who
admire this man.
He kept doing what was best for the country and not for
himself. I salute you President Bush.
ACLU fights for civil rights
Every time I read a viewpoint or comment about Ameri-
can Civil Liberties Union, it seems written by someone who
doesn't know anything about this organization or is simply
misinformed.
The courts do not "favor" nor fear anyone. The courts are
there to interpret and apply the law when misused or bro-
ken.
ACLU is one of the few organizations that fight fearlessly
for our civil rights and usually wins, not because the courts
favor ACLU.
It wins because its claims are within the law. For the last
eight years, many of our civil rights have been abolished.,
The Patriot Act is a good example of it. The religious fanat-
ics pushing their fears and myths onto others are another.
In a world where personal safety is more prized than per-
sonal freedom, the ACLU will indeed find itself unwelcome.
The worst enemy of ACLU is ignorant people.
Committee had made positive progress
It was nice to see another negative article about the
airport on the front page of the Jan. 30, Hometown News
concerning the billboard on U.S. 1. Your article failed to
point out in detail all the work that the Noise Abatement
Committee has accomplished since being reinstated.
Some examples include at least two of the major local
flight schools riot flying on. Sunday and national holi-
days, a voluntary noise abatement pamphlet being pro-
duced by a major flight school, printed by the airport
and handed out to local pilots; a $300,000 plus federal
noise study that the noise complainers repeatedly asked
for; the new leases at the airport agreeing to abide by the
voluntary noise abatement in order to get approval of a
building lease on the airport, and the number of flights
being lower than this time last year, just to name a few.
A majority of these efforts were established well before
the billboard went up.
,Editor's note: Hometown News has printed several sto-
ries about the New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport and
the work of the noise abatement committee. To view these
stories, go to hometownnewsol.com and enter search term
"New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport."

Damare said she and her
husband stopped, but did-
n't see a person and only
realized what happened
when they later heard
about the hit and run. It's
unclear if Damare will face

Shooting victim may
be the victim of
retaliation
Police said a man shot in
the groin in Daytona Beach
may have been a victim of
retaliation. Herbert Jenkins,
51, was rushed to the hospi-
tal after police said some-
one pulled up in a van on
Lockhart Street and fired
four times at Jenkins, hit-
ting him at least once.
Police don't think the
shooting was random. They
said Jenkins is a suspect in a
sexual assault earlier the
day of the shooting and
believe the shooting may
have been retribution for
the reported assault.
Fast food restaurant
robbery suspect
caught
Daytona Beach police
arrested a man who they said
robbed a Burger King at knife
point and authorities in New
Smyrna Beach think the
same man robbed a McDon-
ald's there the night before.
Police said Victor Stephens,
46, went into the Burger King
on Nova Road, just North of
Mason, pulled out a knife
and demanded cash.
Stephens actually reached
over the counter, grabbed
the cash and ran. Officers
had a good description of the
vehicle and tracked it to a
house on Magnolia where
Stephens was arrested. New
Smyrna Beach police
released surveillance video
of the McDonald's robbery,
where the suspect was seen,
knife in hand, jumping over
the counter to steal cash and
they say they are just about
sure the man in the surveil-
lance is Stephens.

Aries-March 21-April 19
Life is looking positive for
you, Aries. You have a great
friend and protector in Mars.
Now is the time to launch
new projects. Your energy
and natural rhythms will be
strong for the next three
months. When you get that
right feeling within, listen to
it, trust it and act on it. It is
your instincts giving you the
green lightto go.
Taurus-April 20-May 20
Making a list every day of the
things and events you need
to address will help keep you
focused on the most impor-
tant. Keep working off the
top of the list. Pace yourself.
You don't have to get every-
thing done at once. Less
important ones can wait.
Stay centered. There is calm
at the eye of the storm. You
will prevail.
Gemini-May 21-June 21
When you give, you give
freely. You have a great reser-
voir of love and talent to
draw from. Your sensitivity to
others keeps you moving in
the right direction. Just be
careful about overextending
yourself. Sometimes less is
more. Your very'first impres-
sion is always the best when
your heart is open and you
are listening.
Cancer-June 22-July 22
Life continues to roll along.
Your attention to detail is
what keeps 'you from
becoming overwhelmed.
Your strong sense of respon-
sibility is one of your greatest
virtues. Your wonderful atti-
tude toward family and oth-
ers keeps you going. You are
on the verge of much posi-
tive growth in the New Year.
Keep on keeping on.
Leo-July 23-Aug. 22
Life continues to move along
at a timely clip for you. Leo
the lion is strong, fast and

time. Also, you have a very
large heart. Continue to

feel and what you want. Oth-

710 Houses for Sale]

Thmw another pompano on the barbie for good eatin'
Lots of small blue fish in the
Halifax right now. I have
caught them north by the
Flagler County line, south of
Dunlawton Avenue and
downtown Daytona Beach
near the Orange Avenue
Bridge. During Speedweeks,
Al Houser and I fished his
Carolina Skiff under the
Seabreeze Bridge to no avail.
We went there looking for
the sea trout that hang in the
deep water each winter, but
found nothing. Working into
the shallow flats along the
east side of the river, we eased
up onto several red fish that
were trying to escape the
morning chill.
The deeper water was
green and murky and just
where the water begins to
shallows up and clear, we
found reds enjoying the

penetrating warmth from the
morning sun.
The first group of six was so
stoic that the boat was on
them before they spooked.
We encountered that same
phenomenon again and
again. Reds lying in the sun
right where the water began
to clear. As soon as they were
disturbed, they had but a
short burst to be in the darker
water and hidden. Not a hit
did we get but we sure saw
lots of reds. Hopefully, it's a
good sign for warmer
weather.
Fishing downtown Daytona
Beach during the races is
always a surreal experience.
There I sit without a care,
except whether or not the fish
will bite, and across town I
can hear the hum of cars with
big engines being driven by
men who are risking their
lives.
Catching fish with racing in
my ear always seems one of
the stranger things about
living in eastVolusia County.
We are just finishing up on
one of the best winter surf
fishing seasons in recent
memory. Lots of fishermen
braved the chilly weather to
come away with nice catches.
The star of the show was
pompano. They are usually
pretty scarce when the water
gets as cold as it did in
January and February, but
they stayed around all winter.
Nice sized ones, at that.
Pompano insist on shellfish
for food and one of the
reasons they held strong was
that their favorite morsel, the
sand flea, also were plentiful.
Sand fleas are the little oval
crabs that move at water's
edge and burrow back into
the sand as the wave recedes.
You can catch them in a flea
digger or even scoop them up
by hand. The pompano were
in close so all that you had to
do was dig a little bait, make a
short cast and wait. I never
heard of anyone getting a six
fish limit, but it seemed that
anyone with a little patience
could catch a couple. Pom-
pano are in the jack family,
but are just mild tasting
enough to be about perfect.
As you all know, I worship
at the alter of the fried fish,
but a few pomp filets with
lime slices on the grill leads to
fish dinner nirvana! Since
they were here during the
cool weather, once the water
warms, there should be
plenty to be had.
Whiting have also been
good in the surf. Some big old
bull whiting have been
coming in near my home in
Ormond-by-the-Sea. They
too, have been hitting sand
fleas.
Watch for the spring mullet
run in the surf and fish for the
big reds that will be right
behind them., Don't ignore
diving birds! Anywhere the
birds are feeding, something
is tearing up the bait under-
neath.
The blue fish will get bigger
as the water warms and when
they are around you should
always use a steel leader.
Vicious feeders, blues are
the pit bulls of our waters.
They are lots of fun to catch
and better eating than most
believe. Use a mix of corn
meal and flour (heavy on the
corn meal) to fry up crispy
filets. Pour a little buttermilk
salad dressing as a dip and
you are in business. Oh man,
I'm getting hungry.
Don't forget to check out
the Florida Tackle Show at 9
a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb.
21, at the Daytona Beach
Plaza Resort.
Dan Smith has fished the
waters ofVolusia Coiunty for
40 years. When he's not
fishing, the retired contractor
is heavily involved with the
Ormond Beach Historical
Trust. For questions or

Some issues just not worth the time to troubleshoot
very now and again I
get an e-mail ques-
tion and the
exchange that results
makes me go "Hmm ... I
bet there are other people
out there who have similar
questions."
Then I try to remember
to ask whoever's e-mailing
me if it's OK to use their
question in an upcoming
column along with their
first name. I don't think
I've ever had anyone tell
me no, and this week
Frank on the Treasure
Coast was kind enough to
OK the following:
"Sean, I have enjoyed
reading your column for a
long time. But I have never
contacted you before. I
hope you can help me With
this question.
"About a month or so
ago, I started having a
problem with opening
links in e-mails I receive.
When I click on a link to a
r COMPUTE
THIS
SEAN MCCARTHY
URL, it takes about 20 or
30 seconds to bring up the
site. If I copy the URL and
paste it into my IE7, no
problem. I tried the'
'tools/options/advanced'
in IE and made sure that
the 'automatically check
for IE updates' was not
checked. I even tried
removing all of my IE add-
ins, still the delay occurs.
Do you have any ideas? My
environment is..."
At this point, Frank was
helpful enough to tell me
as much information as he
could about his system,
things such as make and
model, amount of ram,
version of Windows you
know, the kind of details
that would help me
possibly answer his
question.
And my reply:
"Hi Frank: Thanks for
writing. To be quite honest
with you, I have practiced
the art of copying and
pasting the Web addresses
out of my e-mail client
(Outlook Express on one
machine and Outlook on
another) and into my
browser window manually
for several years now.
In fact, I cringe and
curse under my breath
when I accidentally click a
link in e-mail, rather than
copy to highlight, because
the process of the e-mail
client invoking the brows-
er and then passing the
URL off to the address bar
has so many things
involved (behind the
scenes) that it takes many
times longer that way than
it does to just copy the
link, maximize the brows-
er, then paste the link into
the address bar.
I've noticed that this
delay is present whether
you are using Internet
Explorer, Firefox, Chrome,
Opera or any of the other
browsers out there. The
delay seems to be coming
from the e-mail client side
* (Outlook Express, Outlook,
Thunderbird, eqc.) and
doesn't seem to be an
issue with the browser.
Now, Web mail is a
different story. E-mail
messages in Web mail sites
(such as Yahoo's Yahoo
mail or Google's g-mail)
are already in the browser
environment, so clicking
the link actually works as
instantly as you would
expect (I usually right click
the link and then open in
another tab, so as not to
have to use the back
button to navigate back to
the Web mail).
Sorry I couldn't give you
a "quick fix" but you aren't
alone in noticing the
delay.
And before you reply
with "well, it used to work
fast..." understand that
doesn't matter: it's slow
now. Every machine is a
dynamic environment and
things change all the time.
Is it worth the time,
aggravation and frustra-
tion to try to figure out
what changed, or is it just
easier to copy and past the
address from one window
to the other?
Me? Like I said, I've been
copying and pasting for
years now 'cause the
"automatic" transition
from e-mail to browser is
less than reliable.
Hope that helps and
thanks again for writing.
P.S. May I have your
permission to use this
dialogue in an upcoming
column using just your
first name?"
Now, as far as my answer
goes, when I re-read it, I
almost feel like it's a cop
out. I mean, I don't actual-
ly tell Frank what's going
on or how to fix it, I just
confirm the issue and end
up telling him to live with
it.
I realize some readers
may not find that very
helpful (and I probably
will get some knowledge-
able readers who will e-
mail me telling me what's
going on) but I think what
it all boils down to is to
chose your battles wisely;
some issues just aren't
worth the time to trou-
bleshoot, especially when
there is already a fairly
simple work around in
place.
