- Abstract:
- This black and white film (catalog production number 83) with no sound is titled "U. of F. Homecoming Highlights 1940." However, the 1940 Homecoming was held on October 17–19, 1940, and he film begins with footage of the annual Phi Delta Theta-Sigma Nu football game, which was played on Saturday, December 14, 1940. The game was sponsored by the Gainesville Kiwanis club and played for a children's charity fund. The Florida Alligator of December 14, 1940, noted that the game was played on Florida Field and used "professional football rules" for the first time. This was the fifteenth annual game between the two fraternities at UF. According to the Florida Alligator of December 18, 1940, Phi Delta Theta won the game 14-0. Beginning at 00:00:50, shows footage form another non-Homecoming event, the dedication of the hydraulics laboratory on April 5, 1940. The film shows clips of some of the speakers at the dedication: university president John J. Tigert, Florida, Florida attorney general George Couper Gibbs, US senator C. O. Andrews, Congressman Lex Green, and US senator Claude Pepper. Beginning at 00:01:05, are scenes from an unidentified football game between the Gators and another team at Florida Field. In the film catalog, the game is identified as the 1940 Homecoming Game against Maryland, and the film shows the scoreboard at 7–7, but the Gators beat Maryland in the Homecoming Game by a score of 19–0. There is no footage from the 1940 Homecoming on the film.
