Rodolphe Derose, like many writers of the period, viewed Vodou as a set of primitive spiritual practices linked with Satanic worship. He argued that the act of spirit possession in Vodou ritual practice removes one's psychological autonomy and personal liberty, thus leading to a harmful destruction of the self.
