The following texts of telegrams received on the occasion of the retirement t6
the Secretary of State for the Colonies are published for general information :-
From the retiring Secretary of State :-
It is with keen regret that I lay down the office of the-Secretary of State
for the Colonies. In this three years I have been able to visit many of th.
Colonial Territories and to meet both here and Oversea a large number of
people from all parts of the world. I have been fortunate to make a great
many friends of all races during my term of office, and I have learned much
about the difficult problems and golden opportunities which face you all. All
that I have seen and done has confirmed my deepening faith, wisdom and
rightness of the far-sighted policy for Colonial Territories to which all
parties in Great Britain subscribe. I am certain Social Progress, Economic
Prosperity and Political Advancement will grow and flourish in Colonial
territories if we work together and are patient with each other.
Now I have to say Goodbye and thank you. I know at first hand all the
devoted work which the Colonial Service in all its branches and their many
men and women outside Government service are patiently pursuing. I wish
all of them unqualified success, one of the greatest tasks which can fall to
Statesmen and Administrators. My regret at leaving is only mitigated by
my confidence in my successor. Mr. Lennox-Boyd has served with me as .
Minister of State and he is a true friend of the people of the Colonial
Territories.
I send to you all my warmest thanks and my best wishes for the future."

to serve the people of the Colonial Territories. The singleness of purpose
and great force for good is an inspiration to me and I will do all in my
power to forward the happiness and advancement of the Territory which is
our common goal."

1. (a) the conveyance, bi-weekly, on Mon-
days and Thursdays (southbound)
leaving Kingstown at 8 o'clock in
the forenoon, and on Tuesdays
and Fridays (northbound) of
mails, parcels, passengers and
cargo by motor-vessel between St.
Vincent and the St. Vincent Gren-
adines (extending to Union Island)
only, with a projected trip to Car-
riacou once in every fortnight; and
(b) a call at Bequia and return with
the Magistrate and other Govern-
ment Officials on the first Wednes-
day in every month; also
2. (a) the conveyance, weekly, on Tues-
days (southbound) leaving Kings-
town at 8.30 o'clock in the fore-
noon, and on Saturdays (north-
bound) of mails, parcels, passen-
gers and cargo by motor-vessel be-
tween St. Vincent Grenadines ex-
tending to Union Island; and
(b) a call at Bequia and return with
the Magistrate and other Govern-
ment Officials on the first Monday
in every month.
3. The contract will be for a period of
one year from the 1st January, 1955. The
several trips must be done in daylight
with a reasonable stay at each island of
the Grenadines.
4. Tenders which should be sealed,

MOTOR CAR SERVICE.
Sealed Tenders are invited for the
provision of motor cars for the convey-
ance of public officers during 1955.
The Tenders submitted should con-
tain p:,rticulai s of the charges proposed
to be male for waiting. Rates submit-
ted should not exceed those contained
in Statutory Rules and Orders, No. 15
of 1947.
The contract will be terminable by
one month's notice on either side,
and the person to whom the contract
is awarded will be required to enter
into a bond with Government for the
satisfactory performance of the con-
tract.

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS (CADET).
Applications are invited from quali-
fied persons (men or women) for ap-
pointment as Administrative Assistants
(Cadet) in the A administrative Service
of the Government of Janmica.
The post is non-lpensionable and car-
ries a salary of 500 a year. Suc-ess-
ful candidates, provided they pass tlhe
prescribed medical ex;nmination. will be
appointed on prba tton for a period of
three years and if their service is satis-
factory will be eligible, for appointment
to the pensionable post of Administra-
tive Assistant (62(x25--770x25-
9!20) : promotion to the post of Ad-
ministrative Assistant will normally
takc place at the end of the prohationarty
period, but cadets showing, :iininistra-
tive ability may lie considered for sucli
pro'mo'ion before the end of this period.
Ca lets will normally he attached on
appointment either to tlhe Colonial
Secretary's OHice or to one of the Min-
istries, and will be liable to transfer
b,,tween one Ministry and another i:n
ordor to gain experience. Cadets may
be required to t:;ke a course of training
in the United Kingdom after srviung
