VACANT POSTS.
VACANT POST OF DENTAL SURGEON,
COLONIAL HOSPITAL, ST. VINCENT
1. Applications are invited from
suitably qualified candidates for ap-
pointment to the post of Dental Surgeon,
Colonial Hospital St. Vincent.
2. The salary of the post is in the
scale $3840 x $120--$4800 per annum.
Quarters are not provided.
3. Candidates should possess a Dental
qualification entitling them to practise
dentistry or dental surgery in some part
of Her Majesty's Dominions, or a quali-
fication of a foreign country recognized
by the Medical Board.
4. The Dental Surgeon shall furnish
free dental treatment for the poorer
classes, including labourers, paupers and
inmatesof Government institutions and
to all other persons who are entitled to
free dental treatment at Government
expense.
Provided that such treatment shall
not include the making or supplying
of dental prostheses.
In the case of members of the public,
free treatment shall be provided only
at Government clinics and the dental
surgeon shall attend at such clinics at
such times and places as the Governor-
in-Council may from time to time
prescribe.
(2) He shall be responsible for the
dental care and treatment of school
children and shall visit and inspect
all schools at least once annually and
shall carry out such treastent as he
deems necessary.
(3) He shall act as adviser to Gov-
ernment in all matters relating to the
dental health and welfare of the
Community.
(4) He shall perform such other
duties not inconsistent with the above
as the Governor may direct.
5. The appointment is non-pension-
able and the person selected will be
subject to' the Colonial Regulations, the
General Orders and Financial Rules of
the Windward Islands and to the various
Ordinances and Subsidiary Legislation
in force in the Colony.
6. The person appointed will be
liable to transfer to a similar post of
equivalent status within the Windward
Islan dt.
7. Applications should be addressed
to the Assistant Administrator and Es-
tablishment Officer, Government Office,
St. Vincent, and should reach him not
later than 30th April, 1954 giving full

VISOR, MEDICAL DEPARTMENT,
ST. VINCENT.
1. Applications are invited for the
vacant post of Catering Supervisor,
Medical Department, St. Vincent.
2. The salary of the post is at the rate
of $2,000 per annum.
3. The Catering Supervisor sh;ll:-
(a) carry out his duties in co-opera-
tion with the Steward, Colonial
Hospital and the Superinten-
dent of the Mental Hospital
and Old People's Home, who
will indicate to him the institu-
tions' daily requirements ;
(b) study carefully the local supply
conditions at all times and ad-
vise as to what items (within
the dietary scale) can be most
advantageously obtained
(c) ensure that items are obtained
at the most reasonable prices,
and tlht the quality of food-
staffs purchaseiI or supplied by
contractors is- of a satisfactory
standard ;
(d) arrange for the prompt delivery
by the Department's motor pick-
up of all supplies purchased for
the institutions ;
(e) if and when a bulk food store
is established, bulk-purchase
suitable quantities of provisions
and be responsible for their
storage and delivery to the in-
stitutions as required.
4. The post is non-pensionable and
the person appointed will be subject to.
the Colonial Regalatio)s, the General
Orders and the Financial and Stoi-e
Rules of the Windward Islands, and to
the various Ordinances and subsidiary
Legislation in force in the Colony.

vacant post of Honseke,-per, Colonial
Hospital, St. Vincent.
2. The salary of the post is at the
rate of $1,200 per annum.
3. The Housekeeper shall-

direction and supervision of
the Matron:

proper running of all kitch-
ens, pantries and such other
parts ot the Colonial Hospital
as may be assigned to her;

The making of baskets, bags, mats,
hats etc., of fibre is becoming an import-
ant industry in St. Vincent. This handi-
craft industry if encouraged and devel-
oped will greatly assist in solving many
of our economic problems by providing
considerable useful employment and a
most welcome addition to our export
trade.
For this industry to develop and ex-
pand quickly it is vital that supplies of
the raw materials should be available in
greatly increased quantities.
The main fibres used in local handi-
crafts come from the leaves of the
"Wild" or "Screw" Tine (Pandanus
sp.), and Sisal (Agave sp.). These plants
are easy to establish and require little
care once planted.
The Pine is the one most widely used.
It is a plant that provides an excellent
windbreak for other crops, it stands up
well to salt sea spray and will be found.
to be a most helpful plant for Estates and
farmers in the Windward area specially.
Pine is also a useful anti-erosion crop and
should be planted extensively throughout
the Colony on steep banks and the side of
gutters, ravines and streams.
The use of sisal fibre for handicrafts 13
increasing and if planted closely enough
can be made into a stock proof feuce.
Sisal is also an anti-erosion crop if plant-
ed along contour barriers.
All farmers both large and small are
asked to make every effort to grow these
plants wherever suitable. All those who
are interested and who may require fur-
ther information and advice should con-
tact their nearest Agricultural Instructor
or the Department of Agriculture.

THE AGRICULTURAL (MINOR CROPS) WAGES COUNCIL.
STATUTORY MINIMUM REMUNEIATTON.
The Agricultural (Minor Crops) Wags Council hereby gives notice of its
intention to submit to the Governor proposals foV fixing the statutory minimum
remuneration specified in the said Schedule.
The Wages Council will consider any written representations with respect to
these proposals sent to it within 10 days front 27th April, 1954. Any such
representation should be signed by the person making the same (giving his or her
address) and sent to the Secretary of the Wages Council at the address stated
below.
It is desirable that persons making objections should state the precise grounds
for their objections.

Wage Rated.
1. The minimum rate of remuneration payable to all workers paid daily
employed in the fields of the Minor Crops industries (coconub, cotton, peanut,
potatoes, etc.) shall be as follows :

Provided that where a worker is employed on piec-worlk the employer should
be deemed to pay wages at less than the minimum rate unless he shows that the
piece rate would yield, for eight hours of work, to such Worker not less than the
minimuni of wages prescribed.

ger and larger quantities of vines will be
available later on as these are multiplied.
The famous Black Vine is now also
among our collection but will not be
available until next year. It appears
that the re.lson why Black Vine lost its
popularity is due to the fact that the
yield hal dropped. It is suggested that
the reason for this is that the vine,
when planted on poor soil, does not do
as well as other vines on the same soil.
This vine, however, does extremely
well on fertile soil. Since during our
firnt harvesting of the small quantity of
the vine at Camden Park, some of the
individual potatoes weighed as much as
3 lbs. Persons who still have the Black
Vine should therefore plant it on their
best soils.
Cassava Stiecs for Planting.
A limited quantity of sticks' of two
imported varieties which have been
found under experiment to give better
yields than local cassava will also be
distributed now free of charge. The
material is being multiplied and larger
quantities of planting material will be
available next year.
Corn .eeds for Planting.
About 500 lbs. of specially selected
corn seed for planting are available for
sale at 8c. per lb., shelled. No particu-
lar claims are made for this seed other
than that the col:s are carefully select-
ed. As a result of this selection on the
Station over the past two years, corn
yields have risen 25%. Further selec-
tion is continuing and will raise this
standard.

THE CONSULAR CONVENTIONS (KINGDOM O0
ORDER.
(Gazetted 26th April, 1954).
WHEREAS by section 11 (1) of the Consular Conventions Ordinance, 1952, (No.
S31 of 1952) hereinafter referred to as the Ordinance) it is enacted, among other
things, that the Governor in Council may by Order direct that sections 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
8 and 9 of the Ordinance shall apply to a foreign State specified in the Order, being
a State-with which a consular convention providing for matters for which provision
is made by these sections has been concluded by Her Majesty;
AND WHEREAS a Consular Convention between Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
the Second in respect of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland and His Majesty the King of The Hellenes was signed at Athens on the
17th day of April, 1953, which provides for the matters for which provision is made
in the Ordinance;
Now THEREFORE it is hereby ordered as follows :-
1. Short title. This Order may be cited as the Consular Conventions
(Kingdom of Greece) Order, 1954.
2. Application to the Kingdom of Greece. Sections 3 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
and 9 of the Ordinance shall apply to the Kingd6m of Greece.
Made by the Governor, in Council under section 11(1) of the Consular
Conventions Ordinance, 1952 (No. 31 of 1952) this 15th day of April, 1954.
