PRODUCERS' PRICES AND PRICE
CONTROL, ST. VINCENT.
For some months the Government of
SL. Vincenlit his had nuind ir consideration
the question of raising prices for pri-
mary pro i ucts to producer'', in order to
give an incentive for greater production i
and thereby improve the island's econo-
my. The main difficulty, however, as
every cue will realise, is that this iinnie-
di'aely postulal ts a rise il retail prices
and, thr before, an addition to tlie already v
high cost of living. 'lie situation where
thie produc(''r l:is hi:i to stu sidise Lihe
conlsimntl'r canitnot, however. he allow.dt
to conlintinll uch longer, as if the long
view is taken, it must he, as it is nlow,
extremely damaging to the general
economy of the Colony.
2. This matter has boon care I'lly
considered and, whereas the Prices
Control iBoarid havei put n11 t to the Gov-
ernme-l:t a long list of locally ph;lunced
comic oditis and recomm ended in creases
for r tin all. the Goveirnmeni has tdecid-
ed that it w1ll probably he best in the
long run if : ll control we e i r.'itove l
from those products which are not ex-
ported from the Colony and for which
theLre is no external competitive price.
These products may be listed as fol-
lows :-
Fish, MIilk, Beef, Pigs, and Pig
Products, some types of Ground
Provisions, Vegetables.
The re-introduction of cotirol on pigs.
will become necessary when export is
once more allowed.
3. The decontrol of these things,
however, will not come in immediately,
and will be gradually introduced dur-
ing the next three or four weeks. The
first decontrol will, however, take place
this week when fish and milk and cer-
tain ground provisions will be removed
from the control list. It is fully realis-
ed that this is going to add to the gen-
eral cos! of living. and the community
are asked to bear with this as mnch as
possible in order to allow the economic
prosperity of the island to improve.
4. It is further realized that this will
,have to be an experiment, and therefore
if in two or three months' time it is
found that the prices rise to such a
degree as to make it difficult for people
tO live, then the re-introduction of con-
trol will hb considered. In the mean-
time the Government will ask the
Labour Advisory Board in view of the
possible immediate increases of prices
to consider whether w-nges should he
raised once inore in the near future.
