PROHIBITION OF EXPORTATION OF ALL LIVESTOCK.
With reference to the article by the Superintendent of Agriculture, appearing
elsewhere in this issue, on the present' outbreaks of Swine Fever in various
districts of the Colony, it has become immediately necessary to prohibit, until
further notice, the exportation of all livestock from St. Vincent and its
dependencies, and all outstanding licences for such exportation have been
cancelled.
It is hoped that the campaign now waged to bring the disease under control
will take the shortest possible time, so that this unavoidable ban on exports may
be lifted as soon as practicable.

AGRICULTURAL DEPARTMENT NOTICES.
SWINE FEVER.
It is hereby notified for general information that outbreaks of Swine Fever
have been diagnosed at Bequia and in the Stubbs-Victoria Village-Choppins and
Glen areas, and also at Cane Hall and the Three Rivers and Park Hill districts.
These areas have been declared as infected places as provided by The Importation
of Animals (Diseases Prevention) Ordinance, 1933.
On account of the highly contagious nature of the disease it has been found
necessary to restrict the movement of animals to and from the declared areas.
The pig is the only animal which suffers from Swine Fever and the disease is not
communicable to human beings.

How INFECTION SPREADS :-
The blood of pigs suffering from Swine Fever contains a large amount of the
infective agent, and as the blood flows through all the organs and tissues, they
also contain it. All the discharges contain the infective agent to a greater or less
extent, and the intestines showing ulcers are particularly dangerous. Healthy
pigs acquire the disease by mixing with affected pigs. The latter through their
excretions infect the troughs or the ground and litter, and the healthy animals
are infected by swallowing; or licking up, contaminated material. Infected
material can be carried on the boots and clothes of persons in contact with
infected animals to neighboring establishments. Unthrifty pigs may have Swine
Fever without showing" definite symptoms of the disease, and may be moved from
other premises in the belief that they are suffering from some trifling and
non-contagious disease. In this connection, the Superintendent of Agriculture in
close co-operation with the Superintendent of Police and Superintendent of Public
Works, has arranged for pits containing quick lime to be placed across the main
thoroughfares on the borders of the infected areas so as to enforce the disinfection
of all persons, animals and vehicles passing in and out of these areas. In addition,
slaughter of all diseased pigs within the declared areas is now taking place and
the owners are being compensated as provided for under the Ordinance. It has
also been found necessary for the time being, to prohibit the export of all livestock
from the Island and also.from the island of Bequia due to the danger of the disease
being spread to the neighboring colonies. On no account will the unauthorised
slaughter of pigs be permitted and pig owners are requested to report immediately
to the nearest Police Station any incidence of sickness among their pigs.
Supplies of strong disinfectant and lime have been placed at the following
places for the convenience of those persons owning pigs who may wish to take
necessary precautions against the disease :-
(a) Calliaqua Police Station
(b) Stubbs Police Station
(c) Colonarie Police Station
(d) Three Rivers Stud Centre.
Slaughter of other animals for loial consumption will be permitted after
necessary disinfection precautions have been taken by the Sanitary Authority and
Meat Inspectors at recognized abbatoirs and places of slaughter. Movement of
livestock out of the declared areas must, however, for the time being be restricted
until the quick lime pits have been constructed. The co-operation of all owners
of pigs and other livestock is requested in assisting the Department of Agriculture
to eradicate this disease as soon as possible.
Supplies of Crystal Violet Swine Fever Vaccine have been ordered, and are
expected to arrive on the next plane in from Trinidad. Vaccination of all non-
infected pigs within the declared areas will be carried out as soon as possible.

DECLARATION OF INFECTED AREA.
I hereby declare, in accordance with
the Importation of Animals (Diseases
Prevention) Ordinance, 1933 (No. 2 of
1933), under which this Notice is given,
that owing to an outbreak of Swine
Fever at Three Rivers and Park Hill in
the parish of Charlotte, these places,
namely Three Rivers and Park Hill, are.
infected places, and the following area,
that is to say,,that part of the parish of
Charlotte defined below,* is an infected
area. The movement of persons and
animals, carcasses, fodder, litter, dung,
utensils aI a any snch thing out of, and

said Ordinance and the Regulations
made thereunder.

1933), underwhich this Notice is given,
that owing to an outbreak of Swine Fever
at Choppins situate in the parish of St.
George, this place, namely, Choppins, is
an infected 'place, and the following
area, that is to say; that part of the
parish oE St. George defined below,* is
an infected area. The movement of
persons and animals, carcasses, fod er,
litter, dung, utensils and any such thing
out of and into the said area shall be
subject 'to the said Ordinance. and the
Regau ltion s made thereunder.
