HORTICULTURAL TRIALS WITH BUSH SNAP BEANS, SPRING, 1962

V. L. Guzman 1/

Seeds for these trials were supplied by Dr. J. C. Hoffman, Chairman of the
Southern Cooperative Vegetable Trials. Fifteen varieties were compared in the
observational and eight in the replicated trials.

Location and soil type

The experiment was conducted at the Everglades Experiment Station on a soil
classified as pithy muck with a pH 6.2.

Special conditions

Four days after seeding, three inches of rain fell in a short period,
causing severe flooding of the field just when the beans were breaking the
ground. This resulted in delayed germination and unevenness of growth in
places where the water stood longer. However, within a few weeks the plants had
recovered and attained normal growth. It is possible that yields of water in-
jured plants may have been somewhat impaired.

Field plot technique

Randomized blocks with four replications were employed. Plots were single
rows 25 feet long and 2.66 feet apart, with 20 feet of actual harvest row. For
the observational trials, single unreplicated rows were used.

Fertility conditions

For several years the field had been cropped to beans, celery and sweet
corn. A 0-10-16 fertilizer with 0.5% of MnO and the balance in sulfur was
broadcast and disced before seeding in the amount of 500 pounds/A. In addition,
due to the presence of manganese deficiency symptoms, MnO dust was applied three
times.

Planting and harvesting dates

Two hundred seeds per variety and replication were distributed by hand in
25 foot rows and planted l1 inches deep in the bottom of a shallow furrow. Both
observational and replicated trials were seeded March 22, 1962. Harvest began
May 14 and ended May 18.

Weed, disease and insect control

Weeds were controlled by five mechanical cultivations and one hand pulling
of a few large weeds. Four pounds of 40% toxaphene in 100 gallons of water con-
trolled cutworms and three applications of 2 pounds of 15% parathion in the same
amount of water were necessary for control of leafminer. Shortly after germin-
ation, the plants showed yellowing of the leaves. This deficiency, accentuated
