One variety trial for snap beans was conducted in the spring of 1956 cpn-
tinuing the evaluation of bean varieties and the search for varieties and strains
better adapted to this area. In this evaluation varieties suitable for both the
fresh market and freezing industry are considered. These trials were in cooperation
with the Southern Cooperative Vegetable Trials, Seed for these trials were collect.
ed and distributed by Dr. James C. Hoffman, Southeastern Vegetable Breeding Labora-
tory, Charleston, S. C. Two phases of these trials were conducted as follows:

1. The observational stage:

The objective of this stage is to look at a large number of varieties,
strains and breeding lines and to evaluate with the view to select the most promis-
ing materials for the replicated trials. Thirty varieties and strains were observed
in these trials, data for which are presented in Table 2.

2. Replicated stage:

Varieties and strains showing the most promise in previous observational
trials as well as varieties and strains for repeated evaluation are compared with
check varieties Tendergreen and Black valentine for yield. In 1956, the Minute Maid
Corporation of Plymouth, Florida took 10-pound samples from each of 10 varieties in-
cluded in the replicated trials for processing studies. This data is not included
in the report as it will not be available for several months.

How the trials were conducted:

Varieties in the observational plot were planted in single row 30-foot plot
VWtblAn:; replication. Three hundred sixty seed were spaced 1 inch apart in each
30-foot plot. Rows were 36 inches wide. A 20-foot section of each row was harvest-
ed and an estimate of potential yield is given based on yield from these single ob-
servations, Planting was done March 20, 1956 and harvesting was done May 21 through
June 1, 1956.

Varieties used in the replicated plot were planted in single 25-foot row
plots. Three hundred seed were spaced 1 inch apart in each of these plots. There
were four replications in this trial. Planting was done March 20, 1956 and harvest-
ed May 14 through June 1, 1956. All rows were 36 inches wide. Each replication was
harvested by a different picker.

Results:

Table 1 gives relative yields in 30-pound bushels per acre for the 10 va-
rieties planted in the replicated trials. Seminole significantly outyielded all
other varieties with a SVBL line B 219U4l-1 in second rank. This latter line was a
very dark green, round bean, slightly rough in appearance and with somewhat lower
percentage of total yield picked in the first picking than some others. B2567-l

another SVBL line, fifth in rank of yield, was anotherr attractive dark green bean#
with the highest percentage of total yield harvested the first picking. This brq@d7
ing line was highest in rank of yield in the 1955 spring trials. Rogers* New Im.
proved Tendergreen, an attractive Tendergreen type, ranked third in yield. Regular
Tendergreen and Black Valentine used as check varieties ranked ninth and tenth in
yield.

Table 2 gives performance of varieties and breeding lines in the observed
tional trials. Of the green varieties, SVBL line B3370, Northrup King's Pearl Green,
Rogers Bros.' Green Pod, Asgrow's Topmost and SVBL 3097-1 were preferred as candi-
dates for the replicated trials of 1957.

Three wax varieties, Asgrow's wax R-15, Cherokee wax from E. W. Bailey and
Florida Ag. Exp. Sta. 101-W were included among the 31 varieties tried in the obser-
vational trial. Cherokee wax was the most uniform, but wax R-15 seemed to exhibit
considerably more yield potential. 101-W was the least preferred of the wax types.


Stand on observation plots:

In spite of the fact that plenty of seed was used, poor stands were ob-
tained for Wax 101-W, B2932, B2934-1-1-1. B2993-2,B3076-1, B3076-3, B3093-1 and
B3095-3. All of these varieties exhibited "baldheading" to a considerable degree.
"Baldheading" was especially serious on Wax 101-W, B2993-2 and B3076-1, "Baldhead-
ing" has been attributed to thresher injury and may not be a variety characteristic.
Yields on these varieties therefore may be at least partially due to poor stands
caused by "baldheading".
