LEEWARD ISLANDS.

A PROCLAMATION.

K. W. BLACKBURNE,
Governor.

WHEREAS under section 3 of the
Cotton Protection Ordinance 1922
(No. 7 of 1922), as amended by the
Cotton Protection Amendment Ordi-
nance, 1926 (No. 5 of 1926), it is
provided that the Governor in Coun-
cil may from time to time by Procla-
mation published in the (Gazette
declare any period of each year to be
a close season for cotton and for such
other plants as may be specified in
any such proclamation either for the
whole Presidency or for such area or
areas thereof as may be specified in
such Proclamation:

NOW THEREFORE I, KENNETH
WILLIAM BLACKBURNE, a Knight
Commander of the Most Distin-
guished Order of Saint Michael and
Saint George, an Officer of the Most
Excellent Order of the _ British
Empire, Governor and Commander
in Chief in and over the Colony of
the Leeward Islands and Vice Ad-
miral of the same, with the advice of
the Executive Council of the Presi-
dency of Antigua, do by this my
Proclamation declare that the period
from the fifteenth day of May,
1954 to the fifteenth day of August,
1954, inclusive, shall be a close sea-
son within the meaning of the said
Ordinance for the whole Presidency
of Antigua.

AND I do hereby order all occu-
piers of land, in pursuance of the
said Ordinance, completely to uproot
and burn all cotton and okra plants
and all or any portion of the same
growing or remaining on any such
land occupied by them before the
first day of the said close season.

ANDI do farther declare that any
person who sows or plants or causes
to be sown or planted any cotton or
okra in any part of the said Presi-
dency during the said close season
shall be guilty of an offence under
the said Ordinance.

GIVEN at the Government House, .

Antigua, this 22nd day of April,
1954, in the third year of Her
Majesty’s reign.

death occurred on the 18th
day of January, 1954.

COMPENSATION in the above
matter having been deposited with
me under Section 8 of the Work-
men’s Compensation Act, the Depend-
ants of the said ARTHUR JAMES
deceased, are hereby required to
appear before the Commissioner on
SATURDAY, the 8th day of MAY,
1954, at 10 o’clock in the forenoon at
the Court House, Basseterre, when
the Commissioner will proceed to
determine the distribution thereof.

PROOF of relationship of depend-

Vacancy for a History Mistress
at the Bishops’ High School
for Girls, Georgetown, British
Guiana.

Applications are invited from guit-
ably qualified persons for appoint-
ment to the post of History Mistress,
Bishops’ High Schcol for Girls,
British Guiana.

2. The duties are to teach mainly
History, including sixth form work
to the standard of the Advanced
Level of the General Certificate of
Education of London University.
The person appointed will be expected
to take part in some of the extra-
curricular activities of the school in
addition to her teaching duties.

3. A University degree in History
is required, and preferably an hon-
ours degree with at least two years
teaching experience in a Gram-
mar School. A teacher’s diploma
would be an additional qualification.
A candidate who has good experience
in dramatic work or one who is able
to coach tennis andjor hockey should
receive special consideration.

4. The salary is on the scale
£500x£25-£625 per annum, the
commencing salary being determined
by the candidate’s experience and
qualifications. It is expected that
a general revision of salaries will
take place in tho near future.

5. In the case of a person born
either in British Guiana or in the
British West Indies the appointment
would normally be pensionable sub-
ject to the candidates medica! fitness
and to satisfactory service during a
probationary period of three years,
but the successful candidate could, if
she so preferred, be appointed on the
terms steted in paragraph 6 here-
under which are applicable to an
appointee who is neither a British
Guianese nora British West Indian.

6. A non-Guianese or a neon-West
Indian would be appointed on a
three-vear contract and on the satis-

factory conclusion of her period of
service she would be paid a gratuity
calculated at the rate of 2247 of basic
salary for each completed period of
three months’ service, including ap-
proved leave.

7. The Mistress selected for ap-
pointment will be subject to the
Colonial Regulations and to local
General Orders and instructions in
force for the time being in so far as
they are applicable.

8. A British Guianese or British
West Indian appointee who elected
to be placed on the Pensionable
Establishment would be eligible for
vacation leave at the rate of five days
for each completed month of resident
service up to a maximum of six
months, subject to her completion of
a minimum tour of service of two
years and subject also to the provi-
sions of funds annually by the Legis-
lative Council and to the require-
ments of the Public Officers Leave
(Passages) Regulations, 1952.

9. If recruited for service on con-
tract, the Mistress would also be
provided at the Colony’s expense
with a passage back to the country
from which she was recruited on the
satisfactory completion of her con-

tract. She would also earn vacation
leave on the same basis as laid down
in paragraph 8 above for officers on
the pensionable establishment.

10. Applications should be sub-
mitted to the Headmistress, Bishops’
High School for Girls, British Guiana,
not later than the Ist of Jaly, 1954.
In the case of persons resident in the
United Kingdom, applications should
be submitted to the Crown Agents
for Overseas Governments and Ad-
ministrations.

would normally be pensionable sub-
ject to the candidates medica! fitness
and to satisfactory service during a
probationary period of three years,
but the successful candidate could, if
she so preferred, be appointed on the
terms steted in paragraph 6 here-
under which are applicable to an
appointee who is neither a British
Guianese nora British West Indian.

6. A non-Guianese or a neon-West
Indian would be appointed on a
three-vear contract and on the satis-

factory conclusion of her period of
service she would be paid a gratuity
calculated at the rate of 2247 of basic
salary for each completed period of
three months’ service, including ap-
proved leave.

7. The Mistress selected for ap-
pointment will be subject to the
Colonial Regulations and to local
General Orders and instructions in
force for the time being in so far as
they are applicable.

8. A British Guianese or British
West Indian appointee who elected
to be placed on the Pensionable
Establishment would be eligible for
vacation leave at the rate of five days
for each completed month of resident
service up to a maximum of six
months, subject to her completion of
a minimum tour of service of two
years and subject also to the provi-
sions of funds annually by the Legis-
lative Council and to the require-
ments of the Public Officers Leave
(Passages) Regulations, 1952.

9. If recruited for service on con-
tract, the Mistress would also be
provided at the Colony’s expense
with a passage back to the country
from which she was recruited on the
satisfactory completion of her con-

tract. She would also earn vacation
leave on the same basis as laid down
in paragraph 8 above for officers on
the pensionable establishment.

10. Applications should be sub-
mitted to the Headmistress, Bishops’
High School for Girls, British Guiana,
not later than the Ist of Jaly, 1954.
In the case of persons resident in the
United Kingdom, applications should
be submitted to the Crown Agents
for Overseas Governments and Ad-
ministrations.
