COLONIAL CANDIDATES FOR
ADMISSION TO MEDICAL SCHOOLS IN
THE UNITED KINGDOM
Concern has been expressed at the la-ga
number of Colonial candidates who are at
present awaiting admission to Medical
Schools in the United Kingdon. Although
it was hoped that almost 70 would have
been placed in 1950, there were in addi-
tion about 250 for whom no places were
available.
2. It is stated that many of those can.
didates have qualifications below the stan-
dard now required for Medical Schools
and would appear to have little or no
chance of ultimate success, as it is m, st
unlikely that a candidate would be accepta-
ble to a Medical School unless he can show
evidence of suitable qualifications, such as,
(a) a Grade I School Certificate as evi-
dence of a good general education
(not necessarily Science), and
(b) a Higher School Certificate, perfer-
ably with Science subjects,
both certificates being gained at
the earliest possible age and at the
first attempt.

tuUli fi eb p u tijor i t.

ROSEAU, MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 1951.

3. In view of the number of candidates
already on the existing list for considera-
tion in 1951, it will not be possible to
accept more than a very few additional
candidates for 1951, who should hold the
appropriate qualifications and preferably
be in receipt of scholarship awards.
4. In future, all colonial applicants for
medical places will be required to state
whether they have applied for admission
to the Medical School of their respective
areas, and accordingly all local candidates
are advised to make application first to
the University College of the West Indies
5. Candidates are clearly to .understand
that the inclusion of their names on a pri-
ority list does not guarantee their admis-
sion to a Medical School and in no circum-
stances should candidates travel to Ihe
United Kingdom until a vacancy has actu-
ally been secured for them. Those who
do so. without a definite offer of a place,
travel at their own risk and must face the
consequences.
6. Candidates are further advised that
whenever possible they should obtain their
pre-medical qualifications in their own
area and that it is very undesirable for
them to go to the United Kingdom for
this purpose, if it can possibly be avoided.
