PRESS RELEASE
THE Colonial Office and the National
Institute for the blind announce the form-
ation of the British Empire Society for the
Blind which they have jointly formed to
deal with problems of blindness in the
British Colonial Empire and to promote
the Welfare Education and Employment
of blind people in these territories.
2; The Secretary and Chief Executive
Officer of the new Society is Mr. John
Wilson who is himself a blind man. He
travelled 30,000 miles through Africa and
the Middle East as one of the three inves-
tigators who wrote the report Blindness
in Hritish African and Middle East terri-
tories". The Society has been constituted
as an independent limited company under
the direction of an Executive Council with
seven founder members. The Chairman
is Sir Bernard Reilly formerly Governor
and Commander in Chief of Aden and
among the members are Sir Stewart Symes

PERSONNEL REQUIRED
FOR THE
ROAD RECONSTRUCTION
PROGRAMME
IN BRITISH GUIANA
THE following staff is required by the
Public Works Department, British Guiana
Government.
2. The appointments are temporary and
are for a period of two years, but it is
possible that this period may be extended
at a later date,
3. No housing accommodation will be
provided but a housing allowance equal to
10 % of the officer's salary will be paid.
4. The salary will depend on the age
and previous experiencelof the appointee
The salaries for each appointment are set
out,below, but a higher salary may be
paid depending on experience, qualifica-
tions etc.
5. Free passages to and from British
Guiana. will be provided for an officer, his
wife, and family, not exceeding five pas-
sages,
6. The applicants should be over
twenty-eight years of age.
7. Travelling and subsistence allowan-
ces will be paid at the Current Govern-
ments rates.
8. Applications should be addressed to
the Director of Public Works, British
Guiana, and full details of qualifications
and experience should be enclosed together
with copies of at least three recent refer-
ences. The envelope should be endorsed

1. Clerk of Works.
A Clerk.of.Works is required to super-
vise all phases of work for a Road Con-
struction Scheme. The applicant must
have had considerable experience in road
construction using modern equipment,
general survey and setting out for road
construction, R. C. culvert construction,
pre-mix sand/bitumen and stone/bitumen
work and general administration and cost-
ing.
Salary 800 per annum.
11. Soil Mechanics Laboratory Superin-
tendent.
The Laboratory Superintendent is re-
quired to supervise and carry out labora-
tory and field:tests in connection with a,
Road Construction Scheme. The applicant
must have had considerable experience, of
modern soil-stabilized road construction
methods, the laboratory and field testing.

work, including soil surveys, the testing
of bituminous materials and all types of
agregates.
Salary 600 per annum.
111. Bztuminous Mixing Plant Foreman
A foreman is required to take charge of
a bituminous, mixing plant to produce

material for a Road Construction Scheme.
The applicant must have had considerable
experience in the operation, repair and
maintenance of large batch-type bitumi-
nous mixing plants, especially in connect"
tion with sand/bitumen cold mixes and
stone/bitumen cold mixes.
Salary 600 per annum.
IV. Road Construction Forem',n.
A foreman is required to supervise all
phases of work in connection with a Road
Construction Scheme The applicant must
have had considerable experience in earth
moving, reinforced concrete culvert con-
struction and bitumen base course and
surface work. It is essential that the ap-
plicant has had experience of the operation
and maintenance of modern plant used on
this type of work including the Barber
Greene' type of finisher.
Salary 600 per annum,
