This report contains weather data for the Agricultural F.esearch and Education

averages for the years 1929 through 1985.
The present weather station is located 7 miles west of Plant City. Until

T1 :PEI-ATUT2:
Temperatures for 1985 ranged front a low of 200F in January to a hi:;h of
100F in June. There were 9 days of freezing temperatures of 320r or bel.: -
Jan. 6, 21, 22, 23, 27, Feb. 14, Dec. 22, 26, and 27. The hottest day of the
year was June 6 with a temperature of 1000F. January was the coldest month with
a monthly average temperature of 54.40F. June was the wariest month with a
monthly average of 81.50F. January and December were the only months hose
average temperatures were below the 57-year average (Jan. 1929 Dec. c,15).
April, July, and September had average temperatures approximately the same as their
57-year averages. All other months had monthly average temperatures above their
57-year averages.
Tables 1-12 give the daily high, low, and average temperatures, rainfall and
historical extremes in temperatures. Table 13 gives monthly temperature averages
for 16 years (1970-1985), 41 years (1929-1969) and for 57 years (1929-1985).
Table 14 gives the monthly temperature extremes for 1929 through 1985.
RAINFALL:
Total rainfall for 1985 was 45.91 inches. The 57 year average was 53.23
inches. There was a deficit of 7.32 inches or 13.75' in 195. June had the most
rainfall, 10.01 inches. The driest month was April with only 0.71 inches of rain.
There were two rains that were over 3 inches June 15 with rainfall of 3.63
inches and Sept. 1 with 3.83. The Sept. 1 rainfall was associated with Hurricane
Elena.

HURRICANES:
In 1985, there were 11 hurricanes and tropical storms but Hurricane Elena
was the only significant threat to the Tampa area. "Xlena" cane within 135 nautical
miles north, northwest of Tarpa. The storn posed a threat to this area from Aug.
28 to Sept. 4, 1985. A total of 6.14 inches of rain fell with 3.83 inches on
Sept. 1 which was the nost rain received in one day during 1985. Hurricane 2ob
came within 90 miles south of Tampa from July 21 to 26 but gave no significant
rainfall (1).

received. The daily low temperatures for that period were 24F on the 18th, p
250F on the 19th, and 220F on the 20th. Other records of snow were a trace in
Jan. 1951 and 1980. Mention is made of a 3 hour snowstorm on Jan. 8, 1958 at the
station in Springhead, but no official record was recorded at the airport (1).
Table 15 shows total yearly rainfall for the past 57 years. From Jan. 1929
to Dec, 1985 there has been a total of 3,033.8 inches of rainfall. The yearly
average is 53.22 inches. For the 57 years, 24 years were above average in
rainfall amounts; thirty years were below, with 3 years being within one-half
inch of the average. Table 16 contains historical data for extremes in monthly
rainfall for the past 57 years. The most rainfall received in one year was 83.36
inches in 1959. The driest year was 1961 with only 34.02 inches of rainfall.
The most rainfall ever recorded was on June 25, 1945 with 11.5 inches. This was
due to feeder bands from a hurricane which made landfall just below Cedar Key.
Table 17 compares 1985 rainfall for each month to the 57 year averages.
HURRICANES -
From 1871 to 1985, 88 tropical storms and hurricanes, including subtropical
storms since 1968, have passed within 100 nautical miles of the city of Tampa.
There have been 8 in June, 7 in July, 14 in Aug., 28 in Sept., 30 in Oct., and
1 in Nov. On Oct. 19, 1944, a large hurricane came ashore near Sarasota and
moved east to Tampa, which was in the eye. It caused extensive damage, deaths,
and injuries. Winds gusted up to 100 m.p.h. The station at Springhead received
5.3 inches of rain. On June 25, 1945, the largest rainfall ever recorded-for a
24 hour period (11.5 inches) was received due to a hurricane that came within
45 nautical miles of Tampa. It made landfall below Cedar Key. The large amount
of rain was probably due to feeder bands from the storm. Hurricane Donna on Sept.
10, 1960 was a severe storm and came within 35 miles east of Tampa. Winds gusted
to 90 100 m.p.h., and 8.06 inches of rain were received. Other hurricanes have
affected the area in the recent past. "Alma" on June 8, 1966 passed 50 miles
from Tampa with rainfall for the 8th and 9th of 3.21 inches. On Oct. 18, 1968
"Gladys" passed 45 miles from Tampa and gave 2.01 inches of rain on the 18th and
19th. "Isidore", which was a tropical storm from Sept. 25 to Oct. 1, 1984,
passed 20 miles north of Tampa and gave 3.66 inches of rain on Sept. 28, 1984
(1,2).
