CARROT VARIETY TRIALS
R. B. Forbes, Associate Soils Chemist
Thirteen varieties of fresh market carrots were planted on sand land
(Leon, Immokalee, and Charlotte fine sand) at Sanford and 14 were planted
at the Zellwood farm on Everglades mucky peat. Nine lines of processor
type carrots were planted at both locations.
Six replicates in randomized blocks were used in all plantings.
Plots were 24 feet long with 4 rows per plot spaced 12 inches apart at
Sanford and 15 inches apart at Zellwood. A measured area (two rows wide
and 10 feet long) from the middle of each plot was harvested for yield
determination.
Fresh market carrots were harvested when the majority of the
varieties would meet U. S. Grade A standards. Total marketable yields,
which included the oversize but otherwise sound carrots, were also
determined. Ratings for blight (Cercospora and Alternaria) were made
near harvest time at both locations. The fungicide program (maneb +
zinc) was stopped a few weeks before harvest so that enough blight
would be present for comparative ratings to be made.
Growing conditions were good or average through most of the season
except for below average rainfall which necessitated some irrigation.
Data from the Sanford trials are given in Tables 1, 2, 3, and 4,
while data from the muckland plantings at Zellwood are given in Tables
5, 6, 7, and 8.

Results and Discussion
Fresh Market Carrots: At Sanford, three of the new varieties: Hipak,
Carousel and Pacesetter were the top yielders. At Zellwood the leaders were
H 2132 and Carousel for U.S. Grade A carrots with Waltham Hicolor and XP 64296
leading in total yields.
At both locations Hicolor 9 and Waltham Hicolor showed the greatest degree
of blight resistance.
Best eating quality carrots were XP 64296 and Nantes 99 followed closely
by Hipak and Pacesetter.
Processor Carrots: At Sanford, Hybrid 12H was the highest yielder.
However, according to Duncan's Multiple Range Test, there was no significant
difference between Hybrid 12H and 6 varieties which followed it closely:
Danvers 126 (NK), Royal Chantenay (SRS) and (H), Red Cored Chantenay, Royrl
Chantenay (NK) and Exp 1958.
At Zellwood, Danvers 126 (NK) produced the highest yields.
The blight picture showed no clearcut trend. At Sanford, Danvers 126 (SRS)
and Danvers HF were the most resistant, while at Zellwood two of the Royal
Chantenay lines appeared to have better blight resistance than the Danvers lines.
Blight was not severe enough at either location to be much of a limiting factor.
The best tasting carrots appeared in the Royal Chantenay lines.
