CABBAGE VARIETY TRIAL r
'2. eP -
Ivalou D. Hancik and J. M. White '

This report summarizes the evaluations of 39 fresh-market cablge cultivars/lines.
Entries were evaluated for their adaptability to central Florida's winter production conditions.
Fertilizer and pesticides were applied as suggested in the Cooperative Extension Service
Control Guide. City of Sanford reclaimed water was used to irrigate on an as needed basis.
At this time, it is not legal to use reclaimed water to overhead irrigate vegetables which will
not be thermally processed.

The seedbed was sown on October 24, 1994. Hybrid 137 was hot-water treated by the
supplier; all other entries were not hot-water treated. Seedlings were transplanted to a Myakka
fine sand on December 13, 1994. Extremely wet weather conditions (more than nine inches
of rain) prior to transplanting caused the seedlings to be weak, non-uniform, and difficult to
establish.

P A randomized block design was used with single-row plots 30' long x 2.5' wide and
9.5" in-row spacing; there were four replications.

Harvesting began on March 31, 1995 (108 days) and ended on April 27, 1995 (135
days). Due to non-uniform head development, each plot was harvested several times as the
heads reached maturity. Yield data and other characteristics rated in this trial are recorded in
Table 1; weather data are noted in Table 2. Green Cup, Rio Verde, and Bravo are considered
standard cultivars for this area and should be used to make comparisons for desirable
characteristics.
