CABBAGE VARIETY TRIAL
Ivalou D. Hancik and J. M. White

This report summarizes the evaluations of 30 fresh-market
cultivars/lines. Entries were evaluated for their adaptability to
Florida's winter production conditions. Fertilizer and pesticides were
as suggested in the Cooperative Extension Service Control Guide.

The majority of the seedbed was sown on October 13, 1993. Riana, Tempo,
Green Garden, AMX 21029, and AMX 21030 were planted on October 15, 1993;
Bountivoy and Rondy were planted on October 26, 1993.

Super Red 77, Riana, and Cardinal were hot-water treated by their
respective suppliers prior to planting. Seedlings were transplanted to a Myakka
fine sand on November 18, 1993; Bountivoy and Rondy were transplanted on December'
7, 1993.

A randomized block design was used, with single-row plots 30'
wide and 9.5" in-row spacing; there were four replications.

long x 2.5'

Harvesting began on February 28, 1994 (102 days), and ended April 13 (127
days).
Yield data and other characteristics rated in this trial are recorded in
Table 1; weather data are noted in Table 2.

Green Cup and Bravo are considered standard cultivars for this area and
should be used to make comparisons for desirable characteristics.

Explanation of Table Headings:

- Days to harvest number of days from transplanting to first harvest
- Crates/acre yield expressed as 50 Ib cartons/crates per acre
- Percent harvest relates actual number of heads harvested in each plot to
potential harvest if all plants produced marketable heads
Core length an average measurement of two heads sampled, per replication at
harvest
- Head shape R=round, OV=oval, F=flat, P=pointed, sw=somewhat, e.g.,
swP=somewhat pointed
- Head cover & holding (in the field, two weeks after harvest) rated 1=poor, 2-
fair, 3=good, 4=very good, 5=excellent
- Interior internal head quality/tightness, an average of two
heads/replication, T= tight, L=loose, S=semi, V=very
- Plant color G=green, BG=bluegreen, DG=dark green, LG=light green, R=red
- Disease ratings rated 0-5, where 0=absence of disease and 5=severe disease
problem
