CABBAGE VARIETY TRIAL

I. D. Hancik and J. M. White

This report summarizes the evaluations of 34 fresh-market cabbage
cultivars/lines. Entries were evaluated for their adaptability to central
Florida's winter production conditions. Fertilizer and pesticides were
applied as suggested in the Cooperative Extension Service Control Guide.

The seedbed was sown on October 12, 1992. (Crimson, Izalco, CBO-16, and
Quisto arrived late, were seeded on October 21 and transplanted November 24,
1992.) None of the seeds were hot-water treated prior to planting. Seedlings
were transplanted to a Myakka fine sand on November 17, 1992.

A randomized block design was used with double-row plots 25' long x 5'
wide and 11" in-row spacing; there were four replications.

Harvesting began on February 18, 1993, (93 days from transplanting), and
ended on April 2, 1993 (136 days from transplanting). Adverse weather
conditions (10.17" rain overnight) early in the growing season caused severe
flooding/erosion. Plants were replaced as needed. As a result, plants were
at various stages of maturity. Plant/head uniformity could not be accurately
evaluated, and multiple harvests of each plot were required.

Yield data and other characteristics rated in this trial are recorded in
Table 1; weather data are noted in Table 2.

A&C #5 and Green Cup are considered standard cultivars for this area and
should be used to make comparisons for desirable characteristics.

Explanation of Table Headings

- days to first harvest number of days from transplanting to first harvest
- crates/acre yield expressed as 50 lb cartons/crates
- percent harvest heads were counted before harvest and percent harvest was
calculated based on the number of marketable heads cut from each plot at
harvest
- core length an average of two heads sampled per replication, at each
harvest
- head shape R = round, F = flat, OV = oval, P = pointed, sw = somewhat,
e.g., swP = somewhat pointed
- head cover and holding ability (in the field) rated 1 = poor, 2 = fair, 3
= good, 4 = very good, 5 = excellent
- interior internal head quality/tightness, an average of 2
heads/replication/harvest. T = tight, L = loose, S = semi, v = very
- plant color G = green, BG = blue green, DG = dark green, LG = light green,
R = red
- disease ratings rated 0-5 where 0 = absence of disease and 5 = severe
disease problem. There was no incidence of black rot in this trial.
