CABBAGE VARIETY TRIAL
I. D. Hancik & J. M. White
This report summarizes the evaluations of 33 fresh-market cabbage cultivars/lines.
Entries were evaluated for their adaptability to central Florida's winter production
conditions. Fertilizer and pesticides were applied as suggested in the Cooperative Extension
Service Control Guide.
The seedbed was sown on October 23, 1991. (Tempo arrived late, was seeded
November 6, 1991, and transplanted December 20, 1991.) All seeds not previously hot-
water treated by the supplier were hot-water treated at 500 C for 30 minutes and allowed
9 to dry prior to planting. Seedlings were transplanted to a Myakka fine sand on December
3, 1991.
A randomized block design was used with single-row plots 25' long X 2.5 wide and
11" in-row spacing; there were four replications.
Harvesting began on March 6, 1992 (94 days from transplanting), and ended on April
6, 1992 (125 days from transplanting). Each entry was harvested once when it was judged
to be mature.
Yield data and other characteristics rated in this trial are recorded in Table 1;
weather data are noted in Table 2.
A & C #5 and Bravo are considered standard cultivars for this area and should be
used to make comparisons for desirable characteristics.
