Cabbage Variety Trials, 1988-89 JUL U1 1989
Ivalou Hancik and J. M. White 1. :"1 '' F ROG
This report summarizes the evaluations of 40 replicated and 43
observational fresh-market cabbage cultivars. Entries were evaluated for
adaptability to Florida's winter production conditions. Fertilizer and
pesticides were applied as suggested in the Extension Service Control Guide.
The initial seedbed was sown on October 6, 1988. Due to a poor stand in
this seedbed, 17 lines of cabbage were replanted on October 14, 1988. All seeds
not previously hot-water treated by the supplier were hot-water treated at 500C
for 30 minutes and allowed to dry prior to planting. Seedlings were transplanted
to a Myakka fine sand on November 8, 1988.
A randomized block design was used with a single-row plot size of 25' long
x 2.5' wide and 11-inch in-row spacing. There were four replications in the
replicated trial; observational lines were planted in single plots, i.e. not
replicated. Harvesting began on January 24, 1989, and ended on March 16, 1989.
Each entry was harvested when it was judged to be mature.
Downy mildew, alternaria, and black rot were all present in this trial and
were evaluated at harvest.
Yield data and other characteristics rated in this trial are found in Table
1 for the replicated trial and Table 2 for the observational trial. Bravo and
Gourmet are considered standard cultivars for this area and should be used to
make comparisons for desirable characteristics.
