CABBAGE VARIETY TRIALS, 1986-87

J. M. White and Ivalou Hancik

This report summarizes the evaluation of 34 replicated and 95
observational fresh-market cabbage varieties and lines. Entries were
evaluated for adaptability to Florida's winter production conditions.
Fertilizer, insecticides, and nematicides were applied as needed and as
suggested in the Extension Service Control Guide.

The initial seedbed was sown on October 5, 1986. All seeds were
hot-water treated to control black rot. Due to a poor stand in the
initial seedbed, a second seedbed was planted on October 22, 1986.
Seeds for the second seedbed were not hot-water treated. The
observational lines were transplanted from the initial seedbed to a
Myakka fine sand on.Rovember 13, 1986. All replicated varieties/lines
and AMX observational lines were transplanted from the second seedbed on
November 25, 1986. A randomized block design was used with four
replicates of 27-ft rows for each entry. Observational lines were
planted in a single row, 27 ft long. Plants were spaced nine inches
apart in 30-in rows. Harvesting began on January 30, 1987, and ended on
March 20, 1987. Each entry was harvested when it was judged to be
nature.

Downy mildew, alternaria, and black rot were all present in this
trial and were rated at harvest.

Yield data and other characteristics which were rated are found in
Table 1 for the replicated trial and Table 2 for the observational
trial. Rio Verde is considered a standard cultivar for this area and
should be used to make comparisons for desirable ratings.
