Cabbage Variety Trials, 1984485
OCT 23 1987
J. M. White
Un;verslty of Florida
This report summarizes the evaluation of 51 replicated and 88 observational
fresh market cabbage varieties and lines. Entries were evaluated for adaptability
to Florida's winter production conditions. Fertilizer, insecticides, and nemati-
cides were applied as needed and as suggested in the Extension Service Control
Guides. No disease control measures, other than field sanitation, were used for
this trial.
Seedbeds were sown October 15, 1984. The seeds were not hot water treated
as is recommended for control of black rot. Plants were transplanted on
November 27, 1984, on a Myakka fine sand. The soil pH was 5.6 which is slightly
low for cabbage. A randomized block design was used with four replicates of
50-ft rows for each entry. Observational lines were planted in a single row
50 ft long. Plants were spaced 10 inches apart in 30-in rows. Harvesting began
on February 21, 1985, and ended on April 8, 1985. Each entry was harvested when
it was judged to be mature. Some were harvested early while others were harvested
late for optimal yield.
Black rot was not a problem during this trial. Downy mildew was rated at
harvest and the results are in Tables 1 and 2.
Growing conditions were excellent in the beginning. Irrigation was needed
since rainfall was below average (see below). A mid-January freeze with continued
dry weather stressed the trial more than a normal winter. Some frame leaves were
lost due to the freeze and were rated (Tables 1 and 2). Freeze damage to the stem
core was noted at harvest and 12 lines which were younger than the others were lost.
Yield data and other characteristics which were rated are found in Table 1 for
the replicated trial and Table 2 for the observational trial. Rio Verde, Gourmet,
and Abbott and Cobb #5 are considered standard cultivars for this area and should
be used to make comparisons for desirable ratings.

Explanation of Table Headings:
Days to harvest Number of days from transplanting to harvest.
50 lb units/head Based on 50 lb units.
Core length Measured in centimeters.
Holding ability (in the field), Plant uniformity, Head uniformity, and
Head cover rated 1=poor; 2=fair; 3=good; 4=very good; 5=excellent.
Internal Quality rated on 5 heads cut at time of harvest for tightness,
freeze damage to core and tipburn.
Tightness 0 = very loose; 1=loose; 2=semi-loose; 3=semi-tight; 4=tight;
5=very firm.
Freeze damage to core 0=5 cores freeze damage; 1=4 cores freeze damage;
2=3 cores freeze damage; 3=2 cores freeze damage; 4=1 core freeze
damage; 5=no freeze damage.
Tipburn O=no tipburn on leaves; 1=1 or 2 leaves damaged on
1 to 2 heads; 2=2 to 4 leaves damaged on 2 or more heads;
3=damage at 2 or more areas on same head on 1 to 2 heads;
4=damage at 2 or more areas on same head on 3 to 5 heads. There
was not any heavy tipburn damage noticed at time of harvest for any
varieties. In fact, most varieties had no tipburn damage at all.
Plant color B=blue; BG=blue green; BG-G=blue green to green; B-R=blue to
red; DG=dark green; DG-B=dark green to blue; G=green; G-B=green to
blue; G-BG=green to blue green; LG=light green; MG=medium green;
R=red.
Head shape F=flat; 0=oval; 0-F-P=oval to flat to pointed; 0-P=oval to
pointed; OV=ovoid; OV-F=ovoid to flat; OV-P=ovoid to pointed; P=pointed;
R=round; R-F=round to flat; R-0=round to oval; R-OV=round to ovoid;
R-OV-P=round to ovoid to pointed; R-P=round to pointed; R-SF=round to
slightly flat; R-SF-P=round to slightly flat to pointed; SF-R=slightly
flat to round.
Downy mildew O=no disease damage; to 5=severe disease damage. There are
no ratings for black rot or Alternaria because there was no evidence
of any during the harvests.
Freeze damage to outer leaves Visual rating taken on 2/11/85. Freeze was on
1/21/85; 0=severe freeze damage; to 5=no freeze damage. Freeze damage
rating was not taken on ACX 842702,03,05,29,42,57, and 60.

All these varieties were non-harvestable due to late arrival of seeds on November 26, 1984, late transplanting
on January 2, 1985, and a freeze on January 21, 1985, which they did not survive.
