Cabbage Variety Trials, 1 79-80
J. M. White and J. 0. Strand '
This report is the 14th yearly performance trial for fresh market cabbage
at this Center. We evaluated 57 lines and varieties of hybrid cabbage in repli-
cated plots and 62 in observational plots. At harvest, entries were evaluated
for overall performance and adaptability to Florida's winter fresh market
cabbage production conditions. Insecticides and nematicides were applied as
needed as were fertilizer and other cultural inputs (state recommendations).
However, no disease control measures were used in the field.
Seedbeds were sown on October 23, 1979, after hot water treatment of all
seedlots. Plants were transplanted on December 6, 1979, at AREC-Sanford on
Myakka fine sand. A contact nematicide (Nemacur, 2 Ib/acre ai) was pre-plant
incorporated. A randomized incomplete block design was used with four repli-
cates of 50 row feet for each entry. Observational lines were planted in a
single row 50 feet long in a randomized arrangement. Plants were spaced 11.5
inches in 30-inch rows. Harvesting began on February 13, 1980, and ended
April 7.
Data on resistance to downy mildew, alternaria, black rot, and several
horticultural characteristics were obtained and summarized in Tables 1 and 2.
Black rot was once again introduced in some seedlots and spread over the plot
areas. Disease ratings were made once near harvest (Tables 1 and 2).
We have included several categories which were rated subjectively, such
as flavor, toughness, wrapper leaf protection, and mechanical harvesting
index which may be helpful in evaluating varieties. We consider the varieties
Rio Verde, Gourmet, and Abbott & Cobb #5 as standard varieties which presently
best fit Florida grower requirements as evidenced by their large percentage
of the total amount of seed purchase in Florida. Experimental lines should
be compared with these hybrids if use in Florida is anticipated.
Growing conditions were generally excellent. Problems of labor supply
during the harvest period necessitated harvest of some entries 2-14 days later
than the grower would harvest. This is evidenced by the high average weight:
per head of 3.95 for Gourmet and 4.44 for Rio Verde. Since the yield was
based on weight, unusually high yield (50 lb. units/acre) was obtained.
