Sorghum Variety-Test Results from
Ona AREC: 1984

South-central Florida from Orlando to the Everglades has soil and
climatic conditions that are unique to this region where two thirds of the
state's cattle are located. Land use is mainly extensively managed tame and
native pasture, which is within the capability of the sandy, low fertility,
usually poorly drained soils. More nutritional forages are needed to improve
calf production, and also to allow calves to attain a ma in the
region instead of shipping them elsewhere. 0fv* t lal as a

The purpose of this research is to test e adata il yO rida
productivity of grain (milo), forage (silage) MS.Iar and
sorghum x sudangrass hybrids available from c and University
experiment stations. Where trade names are used, no discrimination or
endorsement is intended.

Methods and Materials

Forty one grain, 17 forage, and 4 sugar sorghums and ten sorghum x
sudangrass hybrids were planted in separate studies in four replications of a
randomized complete block designs. Cultural practices are outlined in tables
1, 4, 7 and 8, respectively.

Forage and grain yield was determined from the hand harvest of 10 foot
of row. Grain was thrashed, cleaned and dried at 1400 F for 48 hours.
Forage yield was determined by weighing the green sample from the 10' row
plus a sub-sample of approximately one pound. The sub-sample was chopped,
dried (1400 F, 72 hrs) and reweighed for dry matter determination, which was
used to calculate per acre production.


Percent dissolved solids (sugars) were measured with a hand-held
refractometer and readings were taken on the day of harvest. A single stalk
was taken from each plot and juice was extracted from the center internode.
All readings were corrected for temperature.

Results and Discussion

Grain sorghums

There were no statistically detectable differences (P<0.05) among the 41
entries (Table 1). This result was due to the extremely large variation
associated with the 1984 yields. Better yielding varieties in 1984, like
Northrup King 'Savanna 5', Youngs 'Oro-G-Xtra', etc. have usually been higher
yielding varieties in the past.

Average grain production was 3,410 Ib/A, which was considerably lower
than the 5,000 lb/A, 5-year average. It is not clear why yields were lower
because environment and management practiced in 1984 was essentially the same
as in the past. The experimental site was different in 1984.

Grain'averagedi38% and ranged from 29 to 46% in early and late
varieties, respectively (Table 2). Grain moisture in these entries was 5 to
10% greater than. in previous years which is a reflection of an earlier
harvest date. The 1984 crop was harvested at 100 days, where as previous
crops were harvested at 105 to 110 days.

Disease of the leaves (Southern leaf blight) and within the head
(mildrew) was low, averaging a rating of 2.4 and 2.1, respectively, out of a
possible 10 (Table 2). Bird loss averaged only 3.2%, which was minimal.

The results of grain sorghum varieties that have been tested for three
to five years are presented in table 3. Above average varieties are Northrup
King 'Savanna 5' (bird resistant), Youngs 'Oro-G-Xtra' and 'Oro-T-Xtra' (non-
bird resistant). Better varieties that have been tested 3 or 4 years are
Coker '7723' and '2670' and Pioneer '8311'.

Forage sorghums

There were significant (P<0.05) differences in dry matter yield among
the 17 varieties tested (Table 4). Differences were detected at harvest 1, 2
and for total seasonal dry matter yield. Better yielding varieties were Ring
Around '235 F', Dekalb 'FS 25 E', Funks 'HW 5574', Northrup King '367', and
McCurdy 'F 80'. Ring Around '235 F' averaged 13.5 t/A in two harvests, which
was numerically greater than others. This hybrid had extremely rapid
regrowth when compared to any other entry. Dekalb 'FS 25 E',did not yield as
much dry matter as other entries at harvest 1, but it was observed in 1984
and in previous years that this entry is very persistent and yields well on
successive harvests.

Higher yielding varieties were usually later maturing varieties
(Table 5). The range in days from planting to anthesis prior to harvest 1
was 71 to 87 days out of 97 days for that first growth period.

Lodging ranged from 0 to 61% and averaged 24% at harvest 1, but there
was no lodging at harvest 2 (Table 5). Better yielding Ring Around '235 F'
and Dekalb 'FS 25 E' had no lodging where as McCurdy 'F 80' and Asgrow
'Beefbuilder T' averaged 59 and 61% lodging, respectively.









Grain yield was measured on a single replication and averaged 2,670 lb/A
(Table 5). Some varieties were not sampled because their grain was too
immature, but most were in the hard dough stage when sampled. Many varieties
had good grain yields, especially Asgrow 'Titan R' (3,570 lb/A), Asgrow
'Beefbuilder T' (3,730 lb/A) and Agri Tech 'GK 30 F' (3,710 lb/A).

Better yielding varieties that have been tested for 5 years are Northrup
King '367' (14 t/A) and Dekalb 'FS 25 A' (13.1 t/A) (Table 6). Another good
variety, although tested for only 2 years was Funks 'HW 5574' (13.1 t/A).
When selecting a hybrid, at least 2 years data are needed in order to make a
good decision.

Sugar sorghums

There were significant (P<0.05) differences in yields of sugar sorghums
at harvest 1, 2 and for total yield (Table 7). Only experimental crosses
were compared in 1984 with an older variety, Rio. The cross, ATX 623 x Rio,
yielded more dry matter than any other entry at each harvest. It was
slightly lower in % solids, and lodging was fairly great at harvest 1 (30%).
It was notable that the loss of grain was 0.0 in this variety, but 33 to 99%
for other varieties.

Sorghum x sudangrass

There were no significant (P<0.05) differences in the dry matter yields
at harvest 1 and for total yield (Table 8). There were differences at
harvest 2 and 3. Total yield averaged 9.4 t/A and ranged from 8.4 to 10.2
t/A.

Lodging was not a problem at any harvest and disease was minimal except
in mid summer when heat and humidity were at their highest. Many of these
hybrids are sterile and do not produce grain. This helps avoid lodging, but
results in lower total digestible nutrient production as compared with forage
or grain sorghums.

Little differences exist among varieties that have been tested for 2 to
5 years (Table 10). These varieties have been grown for silage production
(2 harvests/year) and average 10.8 t/A with a range of 10.3 to 11.6 t/A. Any
of these varieties are recommended for silage purposes.

Conclusions

On the basis of testing in 1984 and previous years, the following
varieties and hybrids are recommended for sandy flatwoods soils of south-
central Florida. These varieties were consistently higher yielding,
persistent and relatively free of production problems when properly grown.

Grain sorghums: Northrup King 'Savanna 5' (bird resistant) and
NK '2670' (non-bird resistant)
Youngs 'Oro-T-Xtra' and 'Oro-G-Xtra' (non-bird
resistant)
Pioneer '8311' (non-bird resistant)
Coker '7723' (non-bird resistant)
