Variety Improvement of Bunch and Muscadfne Grapes
p- By J. A. Mortensen, IFAS AgricultUral.-. ----

The year 1980 marks the 35th anniversary of grare -b-redi gt.
Agricultural Research Center, Leesburg. Through the years-t-he,.
objective has been to combine the disease resistance and longevity
of native grape species with the high qualities of European or
other cultivated grapes available.
The purpose of this report is to describe the varieties and selec-
tions that have arisen from the breeding program at the Agricul-
tural Research Center, Leesburg. Four categories of potential
cultivars are described: bunch grape direct producers (cultivars
perform well without grafting on a nematode-resistant rootstock),
bunch grape scion cultivars (require grafting for best performance),
bunch grape rootstock cultivars, and muscadine grape cultivars.
Within each category of selections are listed the named varieties
presently recommended to Florida growers and selections from other
states that appear promising here.
All the numbered selections are still under trial and, unless other-
wise indicated, demonstrate resistance to Pierce's disease for the
test years indicated. None of the numbered selections are available
for general use by nurseries and growers until adequately tested,
named, & released. At present, bunch grape Fla. L4-33 is being in-
creased for release at the earliest possible date. A number of others
are being tested around the state, and will be released as soon as
they are proven superior to existing named varieties.
