FOREWORD
This report is a compilation of research activities and scholarly pub-
lications of the University of Florida. Its purpose is to provide a biblio-
graphical record as well as to provide information about this phase of work
of the University of Florida faculty. Titles of theses and dissertations
accepted by the Graduate Council during the current academic year are
included, both for the purpose of the record and for the information of
scholars working in the various fields represented by these studies. It
should be noted in this connection that graduate research activities for
theses and dissertations involve the collaboration of the graduate student
and the faculty supervisor so that such work is cooperative. This is true
not only in the actual prosecution of the work but also in the sense that
effective guidance requires independent study and research which obvi-
ously cannot become a part of the formal report of research activities of
the supervisor. The first of these conditions prevail in the physical and
natural sciences; the second is common in the social sciences and the
humanities.
The primary purpose of this report is to summarize the research activ-
ities of the University of Florida. A brief description is given of the
research of the teaching faculty since no other University publication
carries a description of this work. The projects sponsored by the organ-
ized research divisions constitute a significant part of the research work
conducted in the University. These sponsored projects are included under
each such agency--The Agricultural Experiment Station, The Engineering
and Industrial Experiment Station, The Bureau of Educational Research,
The Bureau of Economic and Business Research, the Cancer Research
Project, the Sloan Project in Applied Economics, and the Public Adminis-
tration Clearing Service.
Inquiries concerning any of the materials listed in this report may be
addressed to the author, the Chairman of the Research Council, or the
administrative research unit indicated.
INTRODUCTION
A first report on "Current Research and Publications" was issued
in early 1945 covering the 1944 academic year and describing the major
research developments up to that time. It was then intended to issue an
annual summary but the disruptions of the war period made it impractica-
ble to do so. The post-war readjustments, measured largely by the expan-
sion in student enrollments and a consequent almost overwhelming task
of meeting the teaching responsibilities imposed, made it inexpedient
to revive the report. Nonetheless, research activity has continued. The
organized research divisions have expanded their activities. The most
effective teaching requires constant pursuit of scholarship and research
and the University teaching staff has been meeting this obligation.
Thus, the Research Council is now giving this second report in
"Current Research and Publications" and plans to issue a similar report
each year so that a continuous report may be available. Such a report
should fulfill a three-fold objective: (1) recognize and encourage the re-
search work done; (2) indicate the extent and scope of this work; and
(3) point to the need for its support.
Research occupies a prominent place in the minds of men everywhere.
It does not, however, denote a mysterious power. It is a method by which
man attempts to find out something, to discover facts, to draw conclusions
from them, and to use these conclusions in the formulation of programs
for human progress. Once confined almost entirely to the interests of
the theorists, research has now spread to the interests of the practical
man as well. We are living in an age of research.
The functions of a university are generally considered as fourfold:
first, the dissemination of knowledge and ideas; second, the preservation
of knowledge and ideas; third, the interpretation of knowledge and ideas;
and fourth, the augmentation of knowledge and ideas. Dissemination con-
cerns a university's teaching function. Preservation is the function of a
library and is essential for dissemination, interpretation, and augmentation
of knowledge. Interpretation and augmentation of knowledge result from
scholarship and research and, in turn, contribute to the dissemination or
teaching function.
The people of Florida have a genuine appreciation and understanding
of the function of dissemination of knowledge and ideas and are making
more liberal provisions for it. The other functions are less recognized
and less provision is made for them. Though recognizing the primary
responsibility of teaching, the Research Council believes that this func-
tion will be better served as research is translated into the solution of
problems. It thus wishes to encourage research in all fields of learning.
It is to this goal that this report is dedicated.

A RE-EVALUATION OF THE HORTVET FORMULA AND FREEZ-
ING POINT VALUE OF MILK IN ESTIMATING THE PERCENT-
AGE OF ADDED WATER.
Freezing points are being determined on samples of milk which
are known to be normal milk. Known amounts of water are then being
added and freezing points again determined. From these values, a
study of a previously proposed formula for calculating added water
is being made.

investigated.

Genetic studies of certain vegetative, flower, fruit, and seed
characteristics in the genus Lupinus. Breeding techniques among
several species of Lupinus and factors influencing crossability are
included.

This work has been in progress for 15 years and will be continued
indefinitely. To date, eight originations have been released. Numer-

PROJECT METHOD IN ARCHITECTURE.
Since 1935, the College of Architecture and Allied Arts has been
engaged in the conception, development and operation of a curricu-
lum in Architecture in which all professional work has been taught
by means of a series of creative projects.
The objective is to teach Architecture as a unity by reducing the
fragmentation of subject matter to a minimum by blending all into a
correlated whole, and by seeking constantly a more perfect synthesis
so that each student may travel at his own speed according to ambi-
tion, experience, and proficiency, without regard to the progress of
other students or to University time units.
ROSTER OF ARCHITECTS' OFFICES IN FLORIDA.
The compilation of a roster of architects' offices in the State of
Florida giving the names of the principals, the location of the office,
the year established, the size of the office, the type of practice,

ANECOLOGICAL RECONNAISSANCE OF THE BIOTA OF A SERIES
OF PONDS AND DITCHES IN NORTHERN FLORIDA.

A study made in an effort to gain some idea of the importance of
these habitats in the maintenance of the overall biota of the region.
BIRDS OF ALACHUA COUNTY, FLORIDA.
A continuing project that aims at recording data on birds of this
county.
VARIATION IN THE TOWHEE, Pipilo Erythrophathalmus, IN THE
EASTERN UNITED STATES.
This study involves the examination of the towhee, Pipilo Eryth-
rophthalmus, from the standpoint of statistical analysis of variation
in size, color, etc. Five recognized geographic races of this species
are known. To date, approximately 800 skins have been examined
and measured.

A study of the morphology, genetics, life history and geographic
distribution of the frogs of the genus Eleutherodactylus, particularly
in the British West Indies.
GROBMAN, ARNOLD B.
A STUDY OF THE GENETIC ASSOCIATION OF CERTAIN HEMA-
TOMAS IN MICE.
On the Association of Certain Hematomas with myelencephalic
blebs in the house mouse. American Journal of Roentgenology and
Radium Therapy, 1949. Vol. 61, No. 1: 98-99.
Certain hematomas of the liver and testes in the mouse have
been considered to be associated with myelencephalic blebs and
thought to be the result of a single gene. The author has observed
the hematomas in mice without the blebs and has attempted to show
that the hematomas are not due to the gene indicated but represent
two sets of independent conditions.
DISTRIBUTION OF CERTAIN AMPHIBIA (Desmognathus) IN THE
SOUTHERN STATES.
A casual examination of about 1000 specimens indicates that the
geographic distribution of these salamanders (Desmognathus), as
currently understood, needs considerable revision. Three races are
involved. The more important geographic factors that seem to influ-
ence the distributions of these three races include the type of soil
and the drainage basins of certain of the Gulf Coast rivers.

WITH THE DESCRIPTION OF A NEW FORM. (In Press Proceed-

A new species of a salamander (Amphibia) has been discovered
in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. It appeared to be restricted
to altitudes above 3,500 feet.

STUDIES ON THE GENETICS OF MICE.
A new Dominant Autosomal Mutant Affecting Coat Color in Mus
musculus. Journal of Heredity, 1947. Vol. 38, No. 12: 381-4.
The inheritance pattern of a new mutation of mice has been stud-
ied. The mutation in single dose, causes black mice to become blue-
gray; and in double dose, causes them to become white. In addition
to diluting coat color, the gene also seems to reduce number of
progeny.

This book is a report on land vertebrates found on the islands
of Lake Michigan by an expedition sponsored by the University of
Michigan and the Cranbrook Institute of Science.

NOTES ON SOME Turbellaria OF THE EASTERN UNITED STATES.
A study of the occurrence and distribution of Turbellaria, espe-
cially in Massachusetts, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida with
notes on anatomy and other unusual facts.
OBSERVATIONS ON SPECIES OF THE GENUS DINOPHILUS (archi-
annelid) IN THE UNITED STATES.
This investigation covers two new species of the genus Dinophilus
and also includes notes and additional information on one already
known species of this genus. Material has been collected from the
Chesapeake Bay area, the Cape Cod area and the vicinity of Seattle,
Washington.
OBSERVATIONS ON TERRESTRIAL AND SEMITERRESTRIAL
Turbellaria OF THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES.
Almost nothing is known of the terrestrial Turbellaria of the
United States. The present work was undertaken to determine the
occurrence, numbers, distribution and possibly their role in the soil.
STUDIES ON THE TURBELLARIAN FAUNA OF THE NORFOLK
AREA IV, ECOLOGY AND DISTRIBUTION.
This investigation includes a study of the ecology and distribution
of 50 species of Turbellaria which have been collected in the Norfolk
area.
THE FAMILY PRORHYNCHIDAE IN EASTERN NORTH AMERICA.
Considerable confusion occurs in connection with the family Pro-
rhynchidae in America. The author has been studying this family over
a period of years and is accumulating data involving the members of
this family and their relationships.
THE Turbellaria OF FLORIDA.
The Turbellaria of Florida are being studied from the standpoint
of their morphology, taxonomy, ecology, distribution and evolution-
ary relationships.

A list of 276 species representing 223 genera of invertebrates
collected from the shore line area of the Norfolk peninsula, with
notes on habitat and distribution.
STUDIES ON THE TURBELLARIAN FAUNA OF THE NORFOLK-
AREA V. Jensenia Lewisi n. sp.
Transactions of the American Microscopical Society, Vol. 67,
No. 4, October, 1948: 305-314.
During a study of the Turbellarian fauna of the Norfolk Area,
individuals belonging to the genus Jensenia were obtained. Upon
examination it was found that these individuals did not belong to
either of the two hitherto described species of this genus since there
were marked differences including those of the reproductive systems
and in the general shape of the body in the various forms. These
forms were, therefore, described as a new species Jensenia lewisi.

Fishes of the salt marshes of the gulf coastal areas are being
studied statistically to discover growth rates, population, breeding
seasons, and other information relative to life histories.

A STUDY OF THEFOOD HABITS OF QUAIL, CHARLOTTE COUNTY,
FLORIDA.
A detailed examination of 1400 crops of quail in Charlotte County,
Florida, has been conducted over a period of three years in an effort
to determine the availability of quail foods and the food habits of
quail in that area.
NEEDHAM, JAMES G. AND WESTFALL, MINTER J., JR.
A MANUAL OF THE DRAGONFLIES OF NORTH AMERICA.
Planned as a two volume work on all of the species of the order
Odonata known to occur in the United States, Canada, Mexican border
states, and the Greater Antilles. The first volume on the suborder
Anisoptera will be a co-authored project; the second on Zygoptera
is to be completed by the junior author at some later date. The work
will include keys and tables for the identification of both adult and
nymphal specimens, descriptions and distributional notes. About
320 species will be treated in the first volume, which will also in-
clude a discussion of relationships, ecology, collecting and rearing
methods.

The lizard population of the Bahama Islands is being studied and
the principle zoogeographic patterns blocked out. A series of papers

This study involves the different species of amphibians and rep-
tiles that have become established and are now living in the Hawaiian
Islands, their life histories in so far as they are known, their econom-
ic importance, and their historical background, primarily in regard
to how they reach the islands and where they came from.

TAXONOMY AND NATURAL HISTORY OF MAMMALS, Especially
those of the Southeastern States.
TAXONOMY, DISTRIBUTION AND NATURAL HISTORY OF POCKET
GOPHERS OF THE GEOMYS TUZE GROUP.
These animals are confined to the coastal plain of Georgia, Ala-
bama and Florida. The problem consists of determining the geograph-
ical distribution of the various races which are present and the natu-
ral history of them.

STUDY OF SPIDERS (Order Aranea) THEIR TAXONOMY, ECOLOGY,
GEOGRAPHY, LIFE HISTORY, ETC.
This project concerns a study of spiders, particularly those of
Florida. Approximately 100 species new to science have been col-
lected. At the present time, the main emphasis is on Salticidae (Jump-
ing Spiders) and Lycosidae (Wolf Spiders).

IZED BESSEL'S EQUATION.
The generalized equation is of such a form that it contains two
parameters i" and d- When < is put equal to zero, the equation
reduces to Bessel's equation. The general solution of the equation
is obtained by Frobenias' Method. A number of properties of a partic-
ular solution, G-,r,<(() are obtained including a recursion of for-
mula, orthogonality relations, and the evaluation of the integrated
square. The latter two properties enable one to expand an arbitrary
function in a series of 6-r Z each of which is multiplied by a
certain exponential factor.

B. W. Jones has shown that with every ternary quadratic form
there is associated a certain set of arithmetic progressions involving

certain kind must be odd or even according as f is positive or indef-

A mathematical analysis of the stress distribution inside a circu-
lar wood disk in a state of plane stress due to forces acting along
the boundary. The solution for the corresponding isotropic case is
obtained for a simple example.

LEARNING OF WHITE RATS ON A T-MAZE WITH A CONSTANT
TURN AND A VARIABLE TURN.
An investigation was made to determine the role of place and
response tendencies in the learning of 40 white rats on a T-maze.
The learning of the constant turn animals reached 80 per cent cor-
rect when the variable-turn animals were still performing at chance.
Tests made indirected response tendencies were more influential
than place learning at this state of performance.

The Cancer Research Laboratory was established in the fall of 1949.
Because of the nature of cancer, it seemed desirable to attack the problem
on a broad front. To avoid a diffusion of efforts, research projects in the
nature of spearheads of intensive investigation are planned. The following
projects are now underway:
WOISLAWSKI, SIEGFRIED: Therapeutic Substances.
This is a search for a chemotherapeutic agent for the mitigation
or cure of cancer that has been carried on in cooperation with the
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute of the Memorial Hospital. Some 45
compounds have been supplied to date.
LAU, TIEN Ho: Cause of Cancer
2-Acetylaminofluorine causes a variety of cancer in- experimental
animals. These are often remote from the site of application. In study
of the behavior of the compound, only a part of the amount adminis-
tered could be accounted for by chemical means. Radioactive deriva-
tives of this compound are being prepared so that it may be traced in
the organism. (In cooperation with H. P. Morris of the National Cancer
Institute.)
RAY, R. E.: Diagnosis of Cancer
a). Localization of a Radioactive Compound in the Tumor. A Study
of substances which concentrate in a tumor with an investigation of
the chemical structures responsible for selective concentration with
a view to synthesizing an optimum compound.
b). Disfunction of the Thyroid or Other Glands.
Although cancer is locally manifested, it is reasonable to
suppose that some profound change precedes its appearance. This
project is a search for a sensitive test for this disfunction as an
aid in the early diagnosis of cancer.
CAMBEL, PERIHAN: Experimental Gastric Cancer.
There are certain disadvantages to the present methods of produc-
ing gastric cancer in experimental animals. This study is directed to
the discovery of a causal agency for experimental gastric cancer
which will overcome the disadvantages of present methods.
1ORI'M, OLIN II.: Structure of Fluorene.
Studies of the structure of fluorene molecules will contribute to
the use of compounds of this substance, e.g.: 2-acetylanimofluorene
in use in causing experimental gastric cancer. Some new synthetic
steriods will also be studied.
