FOREWORD

A modern state university is more than an aggregation of teachers,
classrooms, laboratories, and libraires. It can be considered as a power-
house of knowledge and ideas. It fulfills its functions as it adds to this
store of knowledge and ideas and transmits them to the people it serves.
Faculty members and research workers are responsible for the trans-
mission of knowledge and ideas by teaching and the creation of new
knowledge and ideas by research and study. The contribution of a pro-
ductive faculty will manifest itself in writings which range from important
books and new technological discoveries to popular articles. Both are
important manifestations of the creative urge which spurs a faculty to
greater service to students and to the people of the state. Without the
former, a university is stagnant; without the latter, it is not making its
store of knowledge available for widest use.
This annual volume listing "publications and theses" of the Univer-
sity of Florida during the last fiscal year is specific evidence that the
staff of the University of Florida is meeting its obligations and responsi-
bilities in creative scholarship and in popular writings for use by students
and the people of Florida.
The sheer number of listed items is impressive. But more impressive
is the nature of the items listed and the fact that they come from all
parts of the University. The research divisions of the University the
Agricultural Experiment Station; the Engineering and Industrial Experi-
ment Station; the Cancer Research Laboratory; the Bureau of Economic
and Business Research; and the Public Administration clearing Service -
all have staff members who are making studies of problems, the solution
of which is important to the people of Florida. It is to be expected, as
the listings show, that many written bulletins, articles, and books ori-
ginate in these activities. The teaching staff, covering all the areas of
learning from the humanities, the physical sciences, and the biological
sciences through the social sciences, also are engaged in study, along
with their teaching, and they too have contributed many books and articles.

There is no way to place a specific evaluation on the publications as
listed here. They constitute, however, an important contribution by the
staff of the University of Florida to the ever increasing store of knowl-
edge. In brief, they are an indication of the contribution of the University
of Florida to a more effective teaching program, to an expansion of the
frontiers of knowledge, and to the practical solution of everyday problems.

J. Hillis Miller,
President
