Officials rip Corps,

Goodloe over

stalled beach

renourishment
By Rick Catlin
Islander Reporter
There were a lot of unhappy campers at the Coali-
tion of Barrier Island Elected Officials meeting Jan. 18
when discussion turned toward the direction, or lack
thereof, of the beach renourishment project.
Seems the project isn't going anywhere and no one
at either the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or contrac-
tor Goodloe Marine has any answers. And that has a
lot of elected officials upset.
"My concern is we are being short-changed," said
Bradenton Beach City Commissioner Bill Shearon,
noting that the project was suspended in mid-Decem-
ber because Goodloe did not want to interrupt the tour-
ist season, but no restart date has yet been scheduled.
Goodloe's equipment and pipes remain on the beach
- most of it in Bradenton Beach.
Bradenton Beach Mayor John Chappie said he's
heard "unofficially" that the Corps and Goodloe are
going to schedule a meeting with him to discuss a
new start date, but he's heard nothing official, despite
repeated efforts to contact Goodloe or the Corps.
"I want the meeting as .ioon as possible," said
Chappie. "We are already in trouble with beachfront
owners losing business and turtle season is coming
soon."
Goodloe Marine was originally scheduled to com-
plete the project by Nov. 1, but said bad weather forced
a number of delays in the project.
Maybe, but Shearon'wasn't buying that excuse
after Longboat Key Mayor Ron Johnson said his town
is also undergoing beach renourishment and its con-
tractor has not been forced to halt the project because
of bad weather.
Johnson also told the BIEO that when his town's
contractor asked to halt for the winter tourist season,
the town commission said no.
Chappie said Goodloe Marine was "obviously not
big enough to handle the operation" like Great Lakes
Dock and Dredge, which did the 2002 beach renourish-
ment project on Anna Maria Island.

'Vampire Biker Babes' filming

OK'd in Bradenton Beach

By Paul Roat
An Island film producer plans to begin filming a
feature movie including Island scenes later this year.
Walt Jenkins, of Anna Maria City, is producing
an admittedly low-budget film titled "Vampire Biker
Babes." Scenes will be shot at the Bradenton Beach
Police Station, after, last week's approval by the city
commission to allow the filming.
Jenkins said he hopes to start filming by March. He
also agreed to provide the city with up to $5,000 worth
of services to promote the city in the form of Web sites,
TV commercials or training videos.
As described by Jenkins, "Vampire Biker Babes"
will cater to "the most profitable genre of films in the
low-budget independent film market, which is horror.
Among horror fans," he said, "the most popular sub-
ject matter is vampires. Currently, motorcycle culture is
sweeping America. Our movie is designed to appeal to
both these fan bases, hence the name."
Jenkins said that the movie is intended to be "well
within a 'PG' rating and there will be no nudity. The
Most skin shown is no more than what you can see when
a person wears a shirt and shorts. The plot is a simple
revenge motif," he continued, with the main character
being a vampire and leader of an all-girl biker club. Her
sister is stopped by another group of bikers and is raped,

he said in a plot summary, and the vampire biker babes
go forth to seek revenge.
City commissioners approved the filming of about
eight hours one night at the police station, with Mayor
John Chappie dissenting. "I'm just not comfortable
with the title and the image it could give our city," he
said. "We've worked hard to clean up that image of
Bradenton Beach."
He also cited an incident in St. Petersburg last year,
when a film was shot in part on the HMS Bounty,
purportedly as a PG-rated made-for-TV movie that
later swept the adult film industry and is now one of
the most financially successful hard-core pornography
films bf all time.

FPL working at

Anna Maria bridge
A firm contracted by Florida Power & Light
to install directional borings will be working near
the Anna Maria Island Bridge the next few weeks,
an FPL spokesperson said.
The company, High Power Inc., will have a
number of personnel and equipment in the area
that may contribute to traffic congestion.

New school drive in
A new permanent parking lot leads
to the new Anna Maria Elementary
School building. Adjacent to the
new cafeteria, it serves as the
parent drive-through. The perma-
nent dropoff and pickup loop will
not be finished for another four
months. The need for a temporary
sidewalk leading up to the school
for walkers and bike riders, in
addition to moving the school-zone
signal light and signage farther
south on Gulf Drive will be
addressed soon, according to a
spokesperson. After the parent loop
and adjoining guest parking lot are
complete, the parking lot shown
here will be utilized for staff.

That company dredged around the clock, while
Goodloe crews seem to work just from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m., he observed. "We're suffering because the con-
tractor bid a job he couldn't handle. It's a mess," Chap-
pie added.
He also said he's going to raise the issue of "reim-
bursement" for lost business because of the presence
of Goodloe's equipment on the beach.
He said he would.inform the other BIEO mayors
as soon as he learns when the meeting is scheduled,
noting that this beach renourishment is not a Manatee
County effort but funded by federal dollars and run by
the Corps.
The county will have some input if Goodloe ever
reaches the Anna Maria portion of the project, which
is scheduled to start after renourishment is completed
to Coquina Beach, because the county will be funding
the majority of that renourishment effort.
Efforts to reach Goodloe Marine for comment were
unsuccessful. A Corps spokesperson said a meeting
will be scheduled soon with Chappie and Goodloe over
the future of the project, but had no specific date.

Manatee County, in conjunction with the three
Island cities and Longboat Key, will hold a free hazard-
ous waste/e-waste collection day for residents from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Holmes Beach
City Hall at 5801 Marina Drive.
Items such as solvents, latex and oil-base paints,
garden pesticides, household chemicals, ammunition,
flares, waste oil, propane, boat bilge-float switches,
pool chemicals, old gasoline in approved containers,
batteries, televisions, computer components such as
printers, scanners, fax machines and CPU keyboards,
copiers, video and audio equipment, small household
electrical appliances, cell phones, digital cameras and
battery chargers will be collected.
Radioactive (smoke detectors) and bio-hazardous
materials, including needles and syringes, will not be
accepted.
Small businesses that generate hazardous waste
may bring the waste to the collection, but there will be

a fee charged for disposal.
The items must be brought to the Holmes Beach
City Hall for disposal.

Whitmore may run for
county commission seat
Holmes Beach Mayor Carol Whitmore said
last week she is considering running for a seat
on the Manatee County Commission following the
announcement that County Commissioner Pat Glass
will not seek re-election.
"I've always said if Pat didn't run, I'd be interested
in running for election to the county commission," said
Whitmore, "but it's a tough decision."
She said she had no idea when she would make
a definite decision, but would resolve that issue in
the near future.

Holmes Beach

gains convicted

sex offender

After being free of any resident convicted sex
offenders for the past eight months, Holmes Beach now
has a convicted sex offender living within the city.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement
reported that a convicted sex offender from Michigan
moved to the 400 block of 74th Street on Jan. 12.
The 33-year-old white male was convicted of
sexual assault and attempted criminal sexual contact
with a minor in Michigan. He has been released from
supervision, but is still required to report his address to
law enforcement authorities.
According to the FDLE, no other convicted.sex
offenders have moved to Holmes Beach since one such
man living near the Anna Maria Elementary School
moved back to the mainland last year after complaining
that neighbors objected to his presence.
Another registered sex offender has been living in
Holmes Beach on Flotilla Drive for several years. That
individual has also been released from supervision.
The FDLE also said a 33-year-old convicted sex
offender is still living in the 100 block of Spring
Avenue in Anna Maria. The man was convicted of
sexual battery, but has been released from supervi-
sion.
A 32-year-old man convicted as a sexual offender
is still living in the 500 block of Gulf Drive South
in Bradenton Beach, the FDLE said, although one
neighbor has reported that the man has moved out of
Bradenton Beach.
Florida law requires that all convicted sexual
offenders register their address with the Florida Depart-
ment of Law Enforcement even after their incarceration
or supervision expires.
For more information on convicted sex offenders
and predators living in Florida, go on the Internet to the
FDLE's Web site at www.fdle.org.

Anna Maria invited to join consolidation talks

By Rick Catlin
Islander Reporter
Holmes Beach Mayor Carol Whitmore and
Bradenton Beach Mayor John Chappie extended an
invitation to Anna Maria at the Jan. 19 Barrier Island
Elected Officials meeting to participate in an upcoming
meeting to discuss Island consolidation, but noted that
the talks will only be about consolidation of govern-
ments, not consolidation of services.
Both Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach voters
approved a non-binding referendum last November
calling on city officials to explore the feasibility of
Island consolidation. Anna Maria's city commission,
however, declined to place the measure on the ballot.
Instead, the commission suggested that Mayor Sue-
Lynn explore the idea of consolidating services with
Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach.
That's an area where Whitmore has no intention of
going. "We're not interested in talks on consolidation of
services with Anna Maria, but if you want to talk about
consolidation of government, we'd love to have you at
the meeting," she told Anna Maria Mayor SueLynn.

tation because the Anna Maria City Commission had

Anna Maria commission has heavy agenda tomorrow

By Rick Catlin
Islander Reporter
The Anna Maria City Commission may be in for
some overtime at its Jan. 26 regular meeting.
Commission Chairperson John Quam has placed
a number of important items on the agenda for discus-
sion and/or a vote, including the second reading of the
proposed coastal overlay district ordinance that would
govern new construction within the district boundar-
ies.
Lawyers for some affected property owners have
already implied the city would likely face legal action
if it passes the ordinance.
But the city has requested a second legal opinion
before it passes the measure and attorney Nancy Stroud
of Boca Raton was hired by the commission to review
the'ordinance. Commissioners at their Jan. 12 meet-
ing indicated they might not have the final reading of
the'ordinance on Jan. 26, just a discussion of Stroud's
opinion, which is expected before the meeting.

Sandbar, center site plans
Also on the agenda will be a discussion on grant-
ing the Sandbar restaurant an extension for submission
of its final site plan. The restaurant missed the Dec. 29
submission deadline and has asked the commission for
an extension.
The commission is also scheduled to review the

Stuck in sand ...
As we enter the sixth month of the estimated
three-month-long beach renourishment project on Anna
Maria Island, more questions than answers swell up.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded Good-
loe Marine the contract to add sand to the eroded beach
on the Island last spring in an effort to restore the shore
that was hammered by the hurricanes of 2004.
The Apollo Beach company began work just after
the July 4 holiday. However, Gulf storms in 2005
prompted Goodloe to delay work, and the project
lagged well past its contracted completion date.
Then work halted altogether somewhere past the
halfway mark, and the pipes and other equipment
were left on the beach while Goodloe and the Corps
attempted to finesse a finale to the project. Concerns
were raised regarding the project flowing through the
high "season" months of February-April and the impact
the noisy work would wreak on the all-important sea-
sonal residents coming to visit the Island.
The project was supposed to be completed last fall.
It didn't happen, for reasons that remain murky and fur-
ther questions about Goodloe's absence during "good
weather" have been raised.
And winter storms can cause just as much havoc as
hurricanes, but, with more predictability. Only Goodloe
can answer why its work slowed.
So here's the quandary: Spend all that time and
extra money to store the equipment for the next few
months and then pick up the project where it left off, or
just finish the job, in spite of tourist season?
It's not like we haven't survived that scenario
before.
Based on the original schedule, and barring any
unforeseen weather problems, the project is probably
at the two-thirds mark right now, with sand added to
the beach from the northern end oI the project to about
20th Street in Bradenton Beach.
The rest of the beachfront is almost totally devoted
to tourism interests motels, restaurants, rental prop-
erties and the like. Yes, it will be disruptive for a few
days and, yes, it could hurt some pocketbooks.
But if Goodloe representatives are true to their
word and can add up to 500 feet of beach a day to the
shore, we're not talking all that long to finish the project
and let everyone go on with their lives.
The alternative is to stall until Mtay -turtle nest-
ing season and then bet against yet another active
hurricane season. A bad bet based on initial weather
forecasts.
So we remain stuck in the sand.
As one athletic shoe company puts it, "Just do it."
Ditto.

Why good names for

bad storms?
Funny how some times when I'm reading a
story in the newspaper, I wind up thinking about
a different subject altogether.
Like just recently, I was reading about
Bradenton Beach official's desire to extend the
boundaries of their city out into the bay on one
side and into the Gulf of Mexico on the other.
First thing that came into my mind should
that happen was that a larger percentage of
Bradenton Beach would be underwater than that
of New Orleans.
And New Orleans made me think of Katrina,
which made me think of hurricanes and how I
never cared for the kind of names those storms
get, and how such naming might affect humans
with the same names.
I don't know any Katrinas, but I'll bet from
this past hurricane season on in time, every time
somebody hears that name, they'll hit the owner
with clever remarks like, "How did you like
New Orleans; was it fun blowing down all those
houses?"
I do know a Charley, however, who is a real
nice guy and never blew even bubble gum, buthe
says he's heard worse than that Katrina remark
because of his moniker.
Why, I've often wondered, don't they name
storms after people who have already caused seri-
ous trouble of one kind or other instead of using
ordinary names like they have done in the past?
Like, why not call one "Hurricane Hitler?"
The man with that name has already caused more
damage in the world than all the Katrinas and
Charleys put together. The only decent thing he

ever did, as I recall, was giving us another chance
to save France.
And why not call one "Son of Sam?" Few hur-
ricanes even Category 5 storms- could erase
as many people as he did in New York some years
back.
For an occasional big long name, just for a
change, we could use Bruno Richard Hauptmann.
He deserves to be remembered for kidnapping the
Lindbergh baby back in 1932.
There are some other three-named bad folks
we could use, too, like John Wilkes Booth and
Lee Harvey Oswald. Plus, believe it or not, there
was an Anna Maria Hahn who poisoned boy-
friends back in the late 1930s. A hurricane with
her name, however, would probably cause many
local nervous breakdowns, even if it only struck
Longboat Key.
And because of the havoc caused by men so
identified, we shouldn't continue to avoid names
like Dutch Shultz, or Al Capone or Lucky Luciano
and should instead stop using good guys' names.
I took up my idea idea seriously enough to take
it up with the World Meteorological Organization,
which currently does all that storm naming. They
didn't turn me down altogether, but instead showed
me that they have already come up with hurricane
names right through the year 2010, and suggested
I come back then.
They showed me some 150 names already in
the books. I couldn't see one bad guy or girl ID'ed
among them. Well, there was one possibility that
may be considered a payback, and that's "Wendy"
on the 2007 list. But only because I never cared for
square hamburgers.
WMO officials said they have made some
tiny changes in planned names over the years -
like they have taken Keith off the 2006 list and
replaced him with Kirk. Nobody there knew why
except maybe to satisfy a friend named same as the
former.
I don't know if Latins will approve the first
name on this year's list: Alberto. And if your name
is Beryl, Chris, Debby or Ernesto (no relation to
Alberto), you're in 2006's top five. If you're Wil-
liam, you have to wait until the season is almost
over.

headlines announced:
Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce Exec-

The Holmes Beach City Commission proposed

The town of Longboat Key scheduled a forum

Condo project

negotiations:

Maybe, maybe not
By Paul Roat
Negotiations? Or maybe just forget it and pay the
fees all over again.
The jury is still out on just what will happen with
the lapsed building permit acquired by GSR Develop-
ment for the proposed Rosa Del Mar condominium
project, 2510 Gulf Drive, Bradenton Beach. GSR had
received city permission to proceed with the 14-unit
Gulffront project last year, but after no "permanent
construction occurred" within a six-month time frame
- the length of the permit the original permit was
declared "null and void" by Building Official Ed Mc
Adam.
GSR principal Steve Noriega had originally
requested the city enter into negotiations with him in
an apparent attempt to avoid paying the hefty permit
fees again. The original permit cost about $122,000;
the new permit, based on a fee increase approved by
the city late last year pumps the charge up to $142,000,
he said.
City commissioners tentatively agreed last week to
allow Me Adam and Noriega to begin talks regarding
the project.
Mayor'John Chappie suggested the tenor of those
discussions should include some enhancements to the
city in consideration of any fee waiver, such as dune
walkovers in the area near the project.
He suggested that the project site be returned to its
original condition. A large quantity of sand is currently
piled on the western fringe of the site.
Chappie also said that City Attorney Ricinda Perry
should be involved in the negotiation process, with her
legal fees and any other city-determined consultants
involved paid by GSR.
City Commissioner John Shaughnessy questioned
the entire negotiation process request, noting that the
normal procedure for any question on a building offi-
cial's action was through the city's board of adjust-
ment.

Murder, mayhem, mystery, amusement
A cast offour, including Barbara Flemming, left, Larry Hamm, center, and Sam McDowell, provide it all in the

person are available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday at the box office, at the door one hour
before performances, or by calling 778-5755. The theater is located at 10009 Gulf Drive, Anna Maria. Islander

Then Noriega stepped up to the plate.
He said that the original permit was approved
by Holmes Beach building officials while Bradenton
Beach was without a building official. GSR discovered
deficiencies in the project's structural design and in
other aspects of the project, stopped work and retained
the services of another architect all of which took
time, he said.
"I don't think we need to pay the whole cost
again," Noriega said. "But maybe we should just pay
the permit fee again, if we have to pay all these attor-
neys."

Commissioners agreed, to let Mc Adam and
Noriega begin talks about the future of the Rosa Del
Mar project.
Noriega and GSR Development LLC partner
Robert Byrne set an Island record in June 2003 with
the price paid for the 1.2-acre property at $7.9 mil-
lion. The land had held four structures, including three
resort motels.
Original plans for the condo project as approved
by the city's planning and zoning board in late August
2003 called for 14 units in two buildings. Sale price for
units at that time was $1.5 to $1.7 million.

practicing peace.
Harrison said students will begin each day by
observing one of the 64 "daily commitments to live
by" compiled by event sponsors on the AME morning
show. These daily commitments include pledges such
as "being honest with classmates," "making healthy
choices for my body," "being an active listener" and
"learning from my mistakes."
Harrison said she hopes to have at least one activity
that includes students from Ballard Elementary School,
which is a magnet school for cultural diversity and has

THE ISLANDER J JAN. 25, 2006 U A-17

'Thanks' from

the staff at

Anna Maria

Elementary
Words are not adequate to express the appreciation
we feel toward this community for all that was done
to help us with the move into our beautiful new Anna
Maria Elementary School.
We would like to collectively thank our remark-
able parents and Parent-Teacher Organization, our vol-
unteers, local businesses and restaurants, the Island
Rotary and Kiwanis clubs, our wonderful students (past
and present), and district employees for all that you did
to assist us.
So many factors impacted our transition into not
only a new facility, but also a new way of working
and learning together, some of which made an already
difficult process even more so. The loss of some dear
friends, the holidays looming close by, the beginning
of the demolition and renovation of our beloved old
school, the end of the marking period with report cards
needing to be completed, working to prepare for the
auction the list seemed to go on and on. But the dif--
ficulty that always escorts change was greatly eased by
the abundance of support that was given us and to you
all we are deeply grateful.
Our first eight days have been wonderful. The chil-
dren have made the transition with ease and we are
off and running to a new year of learning and living
together in our new and beautiful surroundings. A final
thanks to W.G. Mills for building us this wonderful
new school, which when first seen by the eyes of Joey
Cucci, a second-grade student, was given the "official
seal of approval" when he remarked with wide-open
eyes, "WOW! Old is good, but new is TERRIFIC!"
Thanks to all who helped to make it so.

St. Joe says trailer not important

Islanders shouldn't be concerned that the St. Joe
Co. is ready to open a sales office on Perico Island just
because it's moved a double-wide trailer to its property
at Perico Harbor Marina at the east end of the Anna
Maria Island Bridge.
St. Joe spokesperson Jerry Ray in Jacksonville said
the trailer at the marina "is not a signal that things are
close to starting."
However, Ray declined to say what the trailer was
for, and could not give a start date for the opening of
any sales office or construction.
St. Joe has received approval from the City of
Bradenton for a 686-unit condominium project on
property adjacent to the marina, which it also cw ns.
but has not yet begun.any construction.

Fishing slow, but grouper, reds, sheepies good bets

By Capt. Mike Heistand
The fishing front is slow right now, with back-to-
back cold fronts apparently keeping the fish hunkered
down and not too hungry.
Backwater action is pretty much limited to sheeps-
head, a few redfish and an occasional trout or snook.
Offshore action is better, with good catches of
grouper or snapper coming in when the water is calm
enough to let the boats get out in the Gulf of Mexico.
At Cortez Fishing Center, Capt. Jack Parker on
the Skinny M said he's continuing to get his limit on
catches of black drum along with a few keeper reds,
including one 27-inch-long catch-and-release snook
last week. Capt. Randall A. Fowler of Uncle Mud-
fish has found fishing between the cold fronts to be
excellent for sheepshead, many in the 5-pound range,
along with several keeper redfish. Capt. Scott Greer of
Stray Dog Charters has been bringing in great catches
of good-size gag groupers, some "monster mangrove
snapper along with an occasional cobia and hog fish,"
he said, plus some nice-sized catch-and-release red
snapper. Capt. Brandon Kelly of Findango Charters
has been also catching some great hauls of gag grouper
along with snapper.
Capt. Thorn Smith at Angler's Repair on Cortez
Road said he's finding trout fishing to be fair to good
right now, plus he's putting his charters onto some red-
fish and a few mangrove snapper.
Capt. Larry McGuire of Show Me The Fish
Charters said fishing was "on fire last week before
the cold front came through. The full moon caused the
snapper fishing to be absolute insanity, and we left them
biting for another day's 'workout.' We were catching
gag grouper to 12 pounds, lots of big mangrove snap-
per to 7 pounds, plus yellowtail snapper, lane snapper
and triggerfish." His best catches came from in water
of about 110 feet in the Gulf, with live pinfish or Key
West grunts working the best as bait, as well as frozen
Spanish sardines for the grouper. "Fishing has been
very good this winter right before and after each front,"
Capt. Larry said. "We tell our clients they just have
to be flexible and ready to go when the weather is
good."
Bill Lowman at Island Discount Tackle said off-
shore grouper and snapper fishing couldn't be better,
with most of the best catches moving closer to shore
than usual well within less than 100 feet of water out
in the Gulf. For backwater fishers, reds and sheepshead
are the best bets right now, Bill said.
Dave Johnson at Snead Island Crab House said
he's seeing some black drum coming from the Mana-
tee River, plus snapper catches around the Sunshine
Skyway Bridge and lots of small snook around Terra
Ceia Bay.
At Skyway Bait & Tackle, reports include sheeps-
head from the Skyway Bridge, redfish from Miguel
Bay near the oyster beds on higher tides, with shrimp
working the best to get the bigger reds.
At Perico Island Bait and Tackle, reports include

catches of trout from the seagrass flats, redfish from the
docks in the bays, and sheepshead from either the piers,
bridges or near any structures anywhere.
Capt. Zach Zacharias on the Dee-Jay II out of
Parrot Cove Marina in Cortez said he took Richard
Fluke, Bob Freeman and Bob Evans to a "respectable
catch of sheepshead and a few reds last Tuesday despite
south winds around 30 mph. All of the action was
on live shrimp fished around docks and seawalls in
Sarasota Bay and Palma Sola. High winds have kept me
off the Gulf, but when things settle down I'll be fish-
ing along the beaches more often for winter trout and
hopefully snapper."
On my boat Magic, I took Lewis Christman and
Gwen Matthews of Terra Ceia out last week to a good
run of gag grouper to 10 pounds and mangrove snapper
to 4 pounds, plus a few triggerfish and some sheeps-
head.
Good luck and good fishing.

Arrgh! Turns into bigtime 'R' or 'X' for some

It's a shame that some red faces in St. Petersburg
haven't been caught on film, since it seems that every-
thing else has made it into a movie.
Pinellas County officials were beaming last
summer, as a film crew used the HMS Bounty as a back-
drop for what was purported to be a major TV movie.
The ship, built in 1960 for the Marlon Brando film
"Mutiny on the Bounty," has been featured in several
productions, according to the St. Petersburg Times.
But there were some rumors about the cast, and the
wary ship's owners decided that any credits given to
the Bounty or St. Petersburg should be stricken from
the final product. That action proved to be a good call,
although perhaps a bit tardy, because "Pirates" has been
an award-winning hard-core pornographic film that has
shattered sales records within that industry.
Oops not quite the image the family friendly
pier and Bounty strive to maintain.
As the Times headline astutely summed it up: "Yo
ho! Yo ho! ... Oh no."
A day after that news hit the press to our north, and with
assurances that the film would "probably" receive only a PG
rating, Bradenton Beach.city commissioners approved the use
of tlih city's police station for some scenes from a soon-to-be-
produced movie, "Vampire Biker Babes." Mayor John Chap-
pie opposed the production in the city, citing the St. Peters-
burg fiasco, by the way.
I guess we'll just have to m ail fio release of"Vam-
pire Biker Babes" and review its credits see what
unfolds for the city's image.

Rising tide
Although not as immediately destructive as a hur-
ricane, and not as wicked as a tornado, sea-level rise.
could well become one of the most long-term horrors
to be faced by anyone living near the shore, especially
barrier-island residents.
Global warming means enhanced melting of the
polar ice caps and glaciers. The evidence of all of this
extra water ending up in the planet's oceans has been
evident for a couple of decades, at least. Scientists have
been at odds about just how much and how soon the
water \\_il rise. though.
Thi e's- a nb\i study out that provides some addi-
tional data to add to the debate.
Members of an Australian governmental science
organization based in Tasmania have determined that
sea-level rise has increased during the 20th century.
Using satellite measurements, they've been able to
tweak the tide-gauge date worldwide and basically
"clean up" the various information sources so one
really big model can be run.
The results, as explained in the journal "Nature" -
"the acceleration of sea-level rise detected since 1870
matches up nicely with model predictions. If the accel-
eration continue's as expected, by 2100 the seas will lap
the shore about 31 centimeters higher, on average, than
the) did in 1990." According to mY math, that's about a
foot, and apparently matches some other international

information.
Although it seems like a simple thing to get all the
gauges in all the world to be calibrated in such a way
that global reading can be complete, it seems that it's
not all that easy. Tides vary. Older tidal gauges could be
inaccurate. After all, we're talking about tiny changes
o\ er decades* not a tsunami-like aberration.
But with the ;atellite calibration in place, the num-
bers dating back to 1870 could be used today. Results
indicate that there has been a 1.7-millimeter increase
each year, with the rate of rise increasing by an average
of 0.01 millimeters per year.
"The acceleration has not been steady, however"
the team reported. "Sea-level rise was relatively high
from 1930 to 1960, and rates have wobbled up and
down since then. The highest rate has been since the
early 1990s, with sea levels shooting up by about 3 mil-
limeters per year."
To bring all this information into some perspective, the
next time you're standing at a seawall at a moderate high tide,
imagine the water one foot higher. No, it won't be a problem
for us, or.our children, or even our grandchildren, but it sure
is going to bring a whole new definition to "waterfront prop-
erty" to someone in the future.
If all those numbers aren't already clear as mud,
here's some more data.
Fourteen years ago, the then-Sarasota Bay National
Estuary Program published sea-level rise predictions
for the Manatee-Sarasota County area, extrapolated out
to the year 2115.
Final outcome was that the seas would rise to 64
centimeters, about twice what the Aussies are stating
in their findings.
Remember that comment about the sea-level rise
debate getting fed with new data? Here we go. Again.

Can you breathe me now?
And, in an evolutionary change that we well could
come to regret as the waters rise and the land is inun-
dated, fossil evidence indicates that our early, early
ancestors apparently used to breathe through their
ears.
Eh, you say?
Again from the journal "Nature," Swedish scientists
have been looking at a 370-million-year-old fossil fish, a
3-foot-long critter called Panderichthys, which is thought
to be closely related to the earliest four-limbed tetrapods
that in turn are thought to have eventually climbed onto
land and gave rise to modern vertebrates.

Seems that the "ears" in the old fish combine fea-
tures also found in the tetrapods, except that the fish
ears were used to breathe. Sharks and rays have simi-
lar structures today, which proves useful when they're
camped out on the bottom and don't want to inhale a
bunch of sediment.

Look out from above!
I have a small dog. I also have red-shouldered
hawks and at least two big owls that sound like barred
owls hanging around the property. What with the little
dog and the big birds, I spend a fair amount of time
looking up to make sure that the mutt doesn't become
a munch.
It appears that our ancestors also spent a bit of
time watching the the sky. Researchers in South Africa
believe that a 2-million-year-old fossil of what is
believed to be a young ape-man known as the Taung
-child was killed by something like a big eagle.
The fossil is thought to be the "missing link"
between apes and humans. It was found in 1924 and
dubbed Australopithecus africanus. Up to now, it was
thought that the juvenile was killed by a leopard or
saber-toothed cat. However, scientists just looked at the
skull again and realized that jagged tears under the eye
sockets matched the damage done by eagles taking out
small primates of today.
Of course, 2 million years ago, the eagles were
much bigger and were able to swoop dowp and take out
much larger critters than themselves.
As if prehistoric man didn't have enough problems,
now it would appear that feathered fiends need to be
added to the mix.

Sandscript factoid
And if the raptors from above weren't enough,
there are leviathans from below roaming the rivers of
England.
A northern bottlenose whale, all 17 feet worth, was
haunting the London riverfront of the Thames late last
week. The critter, the first in at least 90 years spotted
in the region, was running into boats and providing afi
even more impressive spectator view than the typical
waterfront view.
No clue, as yet, as to why the deepwater mammal
decided to visit the sites of London. The whale later died.
