STAKED TOMATO VARIETY TRIAL RESULTS SPRINT 1987
Paul'H. Everett and Karen A. Armbrester

A replicated trial was conducted at the Southwest Florida Research and
Education Center, Immokalee, Florida, during the spring season (January-May) of
1987 to evaluate the performance of twenty-four tomato cultivars and/or breeding
lines. Table 1 is a list of entries and seed sources used in this trial.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

All entries were seeded in ToddR planter trays #150 (1.5x1.5x2.5 inch cell
size) on December 18, 1986, and were transplanted to field plots on February 2,
1987. Field plots were arranged in randomized complete blocks with four
replications of each entry. Each plot consisted of 7 plants spaced 20 inches
apart in the row on raised plant beds spaced on 6 foot centers. Plant beds
were irrigated with an open ditch seep system with lateral ditches spaced 52
feet apart. There were 6 plant beds and a drive middle between lateral ditches.
On January 16, 1987 all plots were fertilized with 7 lb. of 5-16-8-1.8 and
micronutrients/100 linear bed feet (LBF) applied in a 30 inch wide band on a
pre-bed and bedded over to a depth of 3-4 inches. A total of 14 lb. of
19-0-30/100 LBF was applied on the surface of the finished bed in narrow bands
10 inches to each side of the plant row. The plant beds were fumigated with
Vorlex at 21 ounces/100 LBF and then mulched with black plastic film. Plants
were staked but not pruned. Fungicides were applied on a 5-7 day schedule and
insecticides were applied as needed. Insects and diseases were not a serious
problem in this test. General weather conditions during this trial are
shown in Table 2. February and March were cool, windy and considerably wetter
than usual. After a light frost on April 5 conditions were generally warm and
dry for the remainder of the season. Tomatoes were harvested on May 6 and May
11, 1986. At each harvest fruit were graded, counted and weighed. Per acre
..yields are based on 7,260 linear feet of plant bed.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Table 3 shows the marketable yields and % color at first harvest for each
of the 24 entries. Marketable yields for the first harvest ranged from a high

of 1486 25-lb cartons/7260 LBF for 7181 to a low of 418 25-lb cartons/7260
LBF for 7195. Fourteen of the 24 entries were statistically equal for highest
first harvest yield. Yields from all entries were statistically equal at the
second harvest. Twelve entries were statistically equal for highest combined
first and second harvest yields; 'Pacific' (2594 25-lb cartons/7260 LBF),
'Royal Flush' (2422), 7168 (2417), Hybrid 26 (2347), 7181 (2342), 'Bingo'
(2340), 'Horizon' (2317), PSR 76184 (2305), 'Duke' (2248), 7196 (2181), 'Gator'
(2151), and ACX 8412 (2098). Entry 7195 had the lowest total marketable yield
at 1167 25-lb cartons/7260 LBF.

Using percent color (breakers and red ripes) at first harvest as an
indicator of earliness, 'Jackpot' at 53.6% color was the earliest maturing
variety along with 'FTE 12' (51.1%), XPH 5129 (48.6%), 'Duke' (41.1%), Hybrid
26 (40.8%), 'Horizon' (40.6%), 'Bingo' (39.1%), ACX 5x5 (38.1%), and
'Floratom II' (37.0%) (Table 3). 'Pacific' showed the least color at first
harvest at 8.5% and was judged to be one of the later maturing varieties along
with PSR 76184 (17.6%), 7178 (19.1%), 7181 (20.9%), 'Sunny' (21.2%) and 7168
(22.8%).

Average weight of fruit for the first harvest (Table 4) ranged from a high
of 9.1 oz. for 'Bingo' to a low of 6.4 oz. for XPH 5031, with ACX 5x5 at 8.7 oz.
and 7178 at 8.6 oz. statistically equal to 'Bingo' for the heaviest fruit. At
the second harvest eight varieties were statistically equal for the heaviest
fruit. They are 'Bingo' (5.9 oz.), 7178 (5.8), 'Royal Flush' (5.8), ACX 5x5
(5.8), 'All Star' (5.7), PSR 34283 (5.6), 7195 (5.6), and 'Duke' (5.5).

Percent cull fruit are shown in Table 5 and categories of cull fruit, by
harvest, are shown in Tables 6 and 7. Cull production was not very great during
this experiment and ranged, at first harvest, from 3.6% culls for 7168 to 16.0%
for 'Jackpot' and at second harvest from 1.7% for 7181 to 15.1% for 'Jackpot'.
Causes for cull production were varied at both harvests, however, cat facing and
zipper scars were more predominant at first harvest.
