BOLEY CENTERS IN ST. PETE Dressed to Impress for Job Fair
TO RECEIVE $2.3 MILLION
FOR ON THE JOB TRAINING
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Congresswoman Kathy Castor
and U.S. Secretary of Labor,
Hilda L. Solis, announced Wes-
nesday that Boley Centers in
south St. Petersburg is receiv-
ing a $2.3 million grant to pro-
vide on-the-job training for ap-
proximately 150 youth. The
grants are provided through
Pathways Out Of Poverty, an
initiative funded by the Amer-
ican Recovery and Reinvest-
ment Act. Pathways Out Of
Poverty targets clean-energy
job-training initiatives for indi-
viduals living below or near the
poverty level.
"Boley Centers will use this
money from the American Re-
covery and Reinvestment Act
to provide on-the-job training
for young people so they can
land stable, well-paying jobs,"
Castor said. "What is particu-
larly terrific about this is that
they will learn the ins and outs
of electricity and plumbing,
two critical trades as we evolve
into a clean-energy economy.
These used to be the jobs of
the future. Now they are the
jobs of today." St. Petersburg is
a leader in clean-energy jobs.
Boley Centers has been
serving South St. Petersburg
and midtown for 40 years, with
special focus on providing jobs
and housing for those with
mental disabilities. They tar-
get that critical, on-the-job
training for disadvantaged
youth. Boley is working with

the Pinellas County school dis-
trict, St. Petersburg College,
Pinellas Technical Educational
Centers and the International
Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers, among others, on this
initiative.
"This grant is going to allow
Boley to reach out to 150
young people." Castor said.
"This is going to have a pow-
erful impact, especially for our
neighbors in South St. Pete,
which has an unemployment
rate that is far too high."
In all, Florida is receiving
more than $12 million in Path-
ways out of Poverty Grants:

Tampa set to deploy Canine Search
and Rescue team to assist in Haiti
TAMPA Members of the
Tampa Fire Rescue Canine
Search and Rescue team are
preparing to deploy to Haiti.
The request for their assis-
tance came through the Fed-
eral Emergency Management
Agency that is coordinating
sending the rescue teams.
Two canine teams from
Tampa Fire Rescue will report
to Tampa Fire Station #1 at
808 Zack Street. They will
transfer from their personal
vehicles into a city vehicle and
drive to Miami. In Miami the
Tampa team will hook up with-
the federal Urban Search and
Rescue (USAR) team Florida
Task Force 2. From Miami the
entire USAR team, which will
probably consist of 60 or more
rescue specialists will be trans-
Clearwater Woman's
ported, probably by military
aircraft, to Haiti.
Being deployed from Tampa
are Lieutenant Roger Picard
and his two search and rescue
canines Party Girl and Cinder.
Roger has extensive experi-
ence as a search and rescue ca-
nine handler. His first deploy-
ment was to the World Trade
Center site on 9/11/01. Party
Girl is a black Labrador who
was FEMA certified about 3
months ago. Cinder is a female
black Labrador who has been
on deployments to areas af-
fected by Hurricane Ike in
2008 and to the Jacksonville,
FL garage collapse in Decem-
ber 2007.
Lieutenant Brian Smithey
also has several deployments
under his belt. His female
black Labrador is named Pow-
der. She has been FEMA certi-
fied about 3 years. She was at
the Jacksonville parking garage
collapse in December 2007.
His other canine is Doak a
black male Labrador. Doak was
FEMA certified in December
2009 and is from the same lit-
ter as Party Girl.
These canine teams will be
assigned an area to search in
hopes of finding anyone
trapped beneath the rubble.
The dogs have been trained to
use their keen sense of smell
and hearing to locate people
buried alive under the rubble.
After the dogs "hit" on a loca-
tion, other members of the
search and rescue team work
to confirm the finding and res-
cue the victim.

CLEARWATER- The Clearwater
Woman's Club is once again teaming
up with St. Petersburg College (SPC)
Clearwater Campus to help worthy
young women train for professional ca-
reers. Proceeds from their annual
"High Tea and Fashion Show" will ben-
efit the Women on the Way (WOW)
scholarship program at SPC.
"The scholarship program helps get
women back to school so they can sup-
port themselves and their families,"
says the clubs' vice-president Tammy
Harkins.
The Woman's Club has been sup-
porting the scholarship program since
the early 1980s. This year they hope to
give four $1,000 scholarships to women
pursuing their degree.
Harkins says many of the applicants
are single mothers re-entering educa-
tion after a period of absence, and many
work while they are in school. WOW
gives them the financial assistance that
will support them as they complete col-
lege and receiving skills that will help
them build successful careers.
"I love seeing the look on these
women's faces when they receive their
scholarships," she says. "They are so
deserving and I hope the community
will come have a fun day out at our
luncheon and support the program."
The Clearwater Woman's Club has
36 active members from 30 to 90 years
old. They are part of the Florida Fed-
eration of Women's Clubs (FFWC) and
have been dedicated to improving their
community since they were established
in 1941.
Many of the scholarship applicants
will be modeling in the show, which
will feature clothing from Sun and Fun
Beachware.

Saturday, February 20th at the Belleair
Country Club in Clearwater. Tickets
are $30.00 in advance and $40.00 at the

TAMPA- Floridians looking for a lit-
tle equine action are in luck as the
World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions gal-
lop their way into the St. Pete's Times
Forum this weekend with their pres-
entation of the "Dancing White Stal-
lions". Celebrating its 40th anniversary,
the two-hour show promises to wow
audiences as the Lipizzaners display
their amazing strength and athletic abil-
ity under the command of their riders.
Troy Tinker has been the master of
ceremonies for the "Dancing White
Stallions" for 20 years. He provides the
audience with the vibrant history of
this magnificent breed and explains the
training and techniques they will see
during the show.
To equestrians, the Lipizzaner stal-
lions are known as masters of classical
dressage, leaping and jumping in the
air to orchestrated moves. To audiences
they are the beautiful white horses that
entertain with their fancy footwork.
But it's not just all horsing around.
For the 12 stallions and ten riders it
takes years of training to master the
moves and perform on tour. Tinker says
the white stallions, who are born with
dark coloring and lighten as they age,
typically start training at the age of four.
"Trainers start watching the horses as
they play in the fields to see how well
they can move naturally," he says.
They then begin to learn maneuvers
based on the Spanish Riding School of
Vienna, the oldest classical dressage
school. The principles are based on the
writings of Greek commander
Xenophon that were rediscovered in
the 16th century. As they train into

higher levels at the facilities in Oviedo,
Florida, the stallions are taught to per-
form in front of large crowds and dance
to the sounds of classical music from
the likes of Mozart and Beethoven.
When they arrive on stage, audi-
ences will see a breed whose lineage
dates back to ancient Spain and was
rescued from extinction during World
War II under direct order of General
George S. Patton. The Lipizzaners per-
form what is known as an equine ballet,
dating back to a time when the horse
was a symbol of grace and majesty.
More than 26 million people
throughout America, Europe, Australia,
and Hawaii have bared witness to this
internationally acclaimed spectacle.
Tinker says you don't' have to be a
horse lover to appreciate the beauty of
the animals and the vibrancy of the
show. "You will be able to see the part-
nership between rider and horse," he
says. "It's a extraordinary thing."
Shows are January 17th, at 2 p.m.
and 6 p.m. For more information visit

Merritt Island National Refuge. As the
sea turtles recover and water tempera-
tures rise, another major effort will occur
as the sea turtles are released.
"The work being done for sea turtles
has required a tremendous collaborative
effort with other agencies, businesses and
rehab facilities," said FWC Chairman Rod-
ney Barreto. "We thank everyone who
has provided us with assistance to ensure
sea turtles get through this unprece-
dented period of cold."
When the water temperature drops,
stunned sea turtles may float listlessly in
the water or wash onto shore. Although
these turtles may appear to be dead, they
are often still alive. It is important to re-
port these turtles to the FWC's Wildlife
Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) as
soon as possible.

Endangered Species Act," said Robbin

TAMPA It's an awe-inspiring and
heart-warming sight, thousands of Uni-
versity of South Florida students anx-
iously awaiting their assignments and
then fanning out to the Tampa Bay com-
munity for the annual Stampede of Serv-
ice. This year a record-breaking 3,800-
plus students have signed up to volunteer
at over 50 not-for-profit, community and
government program sites on Jan. 16.
"You'll find USF students involved in a
great many community service projects
throughout the year, but this is the
largest," said Director of the Center for
Leadership and Civic Engagement Jen-
nifer Espinola. "We went from a little
over 900 students in the first year to over
2,000 students in 2008, over 3,000 last
year and we're closing in on 4,000 this
time around. I wouldn't be surprised if
we surpass that number next year. I be-
lieve this shows a great desire to offer
time, skills and compassion before they
get heavily involved in the spring semes-
ter."

CLEARWATER- The Clear-
water Public Library System is
asking the community to clean
out their closets and donate
new or gently used formal
wear for their prom drive.
"With the economy the way
it is right now and prom always
being a major expense for
teens, we thought it would be
great to help those who are
most in need," says the li-
brary's youth services man-
ager, Jen Obermaier.
Staring this week, dresses,
shoes, purses, formal acces-
sories and men's formal wear
in all sizes, colors, and styles
will be collected until March
15 and then distributed to
teens in need sometime in
April.
Obermaier hopes the drive
will help students from finan-
cially challenge families to look
great and have fun on their
prom night. She is also look-
ing at the possibility to give out
coupons for corsages and but-
toners from a local flower shop
to the teens.
Donations can be dropped
off at any Clearwater Library
branch. They should be clean,
in good condition, and on hang-
ers.
Trindell, FWC sea turtle biologist. "Be-
sides being illegal to disturb them, trying
to rescue the turtles without expertise
could harm the distressed animal further."
The FWC and its partners have worked
together over the past few days to pick up
the turtles and transport them to places
where they can recover from the cold
shock. Sea turtle rehabilitation facilities
throughout the state are housing these
animals until they can be released when
temperatures warm.
Most of the more than 2,000 sea turtles
affected by the current cold snap in
Florida are green turtles, with smaller
numbers of loggerheads, Kemp's Ridley
and hawksbill turtles. Cold-stunned sea
turtles have been found stranded in in-
shore waters in Brevard, St. Lucie, Mar-
tin, Indian River, Monroe, Bay, Gulf, Pinel-
las, Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte
counties. FWC biologists predict the ma-
jority of the affected turtles will survive.
"I am extremely proud of everyone who
has pulled together to make sure these
very special animals can survive one of
the worst cold spells our state has ever
seen," Barreto said. "It just shows what
can be accomplished when folks pull to-
gether."

The program serves approxi-
mately 1,500 vulnerable children
ages 5 through 18. Most come
from single parent or low-income
families in Pinellas, Hernando,
and Citrus Counties.
As part of National Mentoring
Month, BBBSPC is looking to
bring more awareness to the com-
munity and potential volunteers
and donors about the success of
their programs. "Everyone in-
volved will be enriched by the ex-
perience," says Susan Rolston,
CEO of BBBSPC. "Our mentors
get just as much out of their com-
mitment as the children do."

Luther King holiday volunteer extrava-

variety of USF student organizations, as
well as USF athletes, Student Govern-
ment and others joined in to work side by
side with community members of East
Tampa to clean up and beautify local parks
and neighborhoods in East Tampa, a com-
munity Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and Pres-
ident Genshaft identified by as the target
area.
Since that time, what is now called the
Center for Civic Engagement and Volun-
teerism has worked with Student Gov-
ernment, a committee of students and
community organizations such as Parks
& Recreation, the University Area Com-
munity Development Corporation and
Clean City, to make Stampede of Service
an increasingly substantial undertaking.
That success was guaranteed when the

donor-supported volunteer net-
work of long-term mentors for
youth, Rolston says they provide
careful matching and screening,
as well as ongoing support for
their "Bigs" and "Littles," as well
as their families.
Fred Potekin, 60, has been a
mentor with BBBSPC for just
over a year. He says the program
helps him fulfill his personal goal
of mentoring a young person with
a manageable commitment.
Potekin and his 12-year-old "Lit-
tle" get together every other
week to talk and do sports related
activities like playing tennis and
baseball, or attending Tampa Bay
Rays and Lightening games.
"For me the best part is seeing
him smiling and laughing when
we spend time together," says the
St. Petersburg resident. "I know
he is enjoying himself and that he
feels comfortable talking to me
about whatever is going on in his
life."
PT Cruiser vs. Semi lands driver in hospital
ST. PETERSBURG On Monday, units from
St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue responded to an
accident with injuries at the intersection of 4 Av.
N-SP/4 St. N., at 0751.
SPFR crews arrived to find that a PT Cruiser
had collided with semi truck trapping the driver
of the PT Cruiser inside. SPFR firefighters had
to cut the roof off the compact to extricate the
patient. Firefighters used multiple hydraulic
powered "Jaws of Life" and other specialized
cutting tools to complete the rescue.
The driver of the PT cruiser was transported
to Bayfront Medical Center in stable condition
and the driver of the Semi truck, Steve Bee 42,
of Wesley Chapel was uninjured.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters are
focused on getting more male mentors.
Rolston is hoping Mentoring
Month will be a big one for BBB-
SPC, with more parents signing
up their children and new volun-
teers coming forward to help.
Their goal is to become a support
system for children to build long-
lasting relationships with men-
tors who are committed to pro-
vide guidance and friendship.
National Mentoring Month is
organized by the Harvard Men-
toring Project of the Harvard
School of Public Health, MEN-

This little boy will defi-
nitely add some spark into
your life. Sparkey is very play-
ful and alert, and quite the ath-
lete, with energy to spare. He
was very interested in the
goats and chickens here at the
SPCA and kept his eye on
them while we were taking
his photographs. He knows
how to sit and was friendly to
his handler. Sparkey is looking
for either an adult-only house-
hold or one that has children
over the age of 10. He would
also prefer to have a yard that
he can run around in. He
would love it if his new owner
would join him at the SPCA
Tampa Bay's free obedience
class, so that he can learn
some new things to show off
to his friends. Sparkey has a
wonderful spirit and a love for
life. If you would like to meet
Sparkey, please come to the

Notre Dame pulls out last
minute win against USF
TAMPA SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- For
a while Tuesday night it appeared as if
No. 3 Notre Dame might not go into its
big game against top-ranked Connecti-
cut on Saturday undefeated.
The Fighting Irish couldn't shake
South Florida until blowing the game
open with a 19-3 run in the final seven
minutes to win 81-64 behind Lindsay
Schrader's 18 points and 13 rebounds.
"I thought that was going to be a dif-
ficult game with the Connecticut game
kind of looming in the background a lit-
tle bit and the media so nicely continu-
ing to talk about it and having us read
about it," Notre Dame coach Muffet
McGraw said. "I thought overall a vet-
eran team at the end of the game found
a way to win."
South Florida (9-7, 0-3 Big East)
stayed in the game by shooting 50 per-
cent until going cold with 7:30 minutes
left, when they went just 1-of-7 from
the floor. Natalie Novosel ignited the
decisive 19-3 run for the Irish (15-0, 2-
0) with a 3-pointer with 6:02 left and
later added a driving layup, finishing
with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Schrader said the key was that she
and fellow seniors Melissa Lechlitner
and Ashley Barlow stayed calm.
"We knew we were going to win the
game," she said. "That comes from ex-
perience, definitely."
South Florida coach Jose Fernandez
agreed.
"When it came down to it at the end
of the game, our inexperience showed,"
he said. "Schrader and Lechlitner were
not going to let Notre Dame lose."
Sequoyah Griffin led the Bulls with
16 points and Leondra Doomes-
Stephens added 12. Skylar Diggins
scored 14 points, Novosel had 12,
Lechlitner scored 11 and Barlow had
nine points and 11 rebounds. Diggins
also played tough defense in a game
where the Irish didn't play as well de-
fensively as they normally do.
"Diggins did a great job on Jasmine
Wynne," Fernandez said. "We could not
Freshman forward, KeNeisha Saunders
attempts to get by number 11 Roshaunda
get into our offense. We were getting
into our offense with 17, 16 seconds
left on the shot clock."
Schrader said it's been hard to avoid
talk about the UConn game, which will
be featured on ESPN's "GameDay."
"When people come up to you, 'Oh
my God, 'GameDay,' UConn," Schrader
said. "I think we're finally ready for a re-
ally, really good test, and this is going to
be it. This is a great opportunity."
McGraw said she didn't say anything
to her players before the game about
the possibility they might be looking
ahead to UConn.
"No. I didn't want to mention the
word," she said. "If you turn on ESPN
you're going to hear about it. If you
walk through the building you're going
to hear about it. So it was hard to keep
that a secret."
McGraw announced after the game
that 6-foot-2 sophomore forward Erica
Solomon will miss the rest of the sea-
son to focus on academics. Solomon
was averaging 3.4 points a game. The
Irish also were without 5-10 guard
Fraderica Miller who missed the game
with a knee injury.
The Bulls will return to the court
on Saturday, January 16, when they
take on BIG EAST rival Syracuse at
the Sun Dome. The game is set to start
at 4 p.m.

USF SERVES UP 2010 WOMEN'S
TENNIS SEASON WITH FGCU CLASSIC
TAMPA- The University of South
Florida women's tennis team will begin
their 2010 season on Jan. 15-17 when
they travel to Fort Myers to take part in
the FGCU Classic.
USF will be joined by North Florida,
Purdue, Missouri, Arkansas, North-
western State, FAMU and Akron.
"The team is excited about starting
the 2010 season and the girls are ready
to go," head coach Agustin Moreno
said. "Our fall season is kind of like a
warm-up. The FGCU Classic will be a
good test for the team and a good way
for the team to start out the season."
Coach Moreno, who has guided the
Bulls to an 59-34 overall record in his
tenure at USF which includes a BIG
EAST Championship, is entering his
fifth season with the team.
In addition to starting the 2010 sea-
son No. 75 in the ITA Collegiate team
rankings, USF also boast three players
who start 2010 ranked in the ITA Col-
legiate tennis rankings.
Freshman Ecaterina Vasenina and
senior Melissa Koning joined the Bulls
roster this season and will take on huge
roles in the Bulls quest to win another
BIG EAST Championship. Vasenina
and Koning will fill the No. 2 and No. 3
slots in the Bulls singles lineup.
Vasenina enters 2010 ranked No. 52
in the ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings
after going 9-3 in singles competition
during the 2009 fall season. During the
fall, Vasenina advanced to the finals in
the main draw consolation singles
bracket at the ITA Southeast Regional
Championships before falling to team-
mate junior Irene Rehberger. Re-
hberger, who will hold down the No. 1
position for the Bulls again this sea-
son, starts out 2010 No. 77 in the ITA
Collegiate Tennis rankings. Rehberger
Two incoming stars to help
TAMPA With a little less than eight
months from the 2010 season opener, a
pair of incoming freshmen have joined
the University of South Florida foot-
ball team for the spring preseason after
graduating early from high school.
Offensive tackle Austin Reiter and
defensive end Brandon Wilkinson
started classes Monday and are set to
begin their USF careers early for the
Bulls once spring practice commences.
Wilkinson, a three-star defensive
end according to both USFNation.com
and Scout.com, stands 6-foot-4, 215
pounds and hails from Venice High
School in Venice, Fla. Wilkinson posted

posted a 10-4 singles record during the
fall.
In doubles, the powerful duo of Re-

Melissa were ranked No. 8 in the ITA
Collegiate tennis rankings and I believe
they will remain highly ranked through-
out the season," Coach Moreno said. "I
was also happy with Ecaterina being
ranked No. 52 and I expect Irene to
quickly move up the singles rankings.
Our team has a real good chance of win-
ning the BIG EAST this season and we
are capable of performing well in the
national arena as well."
Senior Natalia Guevara, senior Al-
lyn Mueller, and senior Jessica Zok will
round out the Bulls singles lineup with
Guevara filling the No. 4 position,
Mueller starting in the No. 5 position
