The Pompano Beach Boat Parade, touted as the oldest continuing floating holiday procession kicks off 6:30 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 13.

Boat parades jazz up the night sky

BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Get ready to sparkle. Floating holiday processions
taking place in South Florida abound.
Double the star power equals double the fun. Kim
Kadashian and Alonzo Mourning will serve as grand mar-
shals of the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade,
Saturday, Dec. 12.
The procession, taking on the theme "That's
Entertainment," begins at 6 p.m. from the area surround-
ing Fort Lauderdale's Esplanade Park and the Broward
Center for the Performing Arts, then proceeds east on the
New River and heads out into the Intracoastal, going north
to Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach. Entry fees are
$35 for private craft.
No anchoring zones will be in effect along the river,
from Channel Marker 9 to the South Fork near Davie
Boulevard.
Suggested anchoring spots are the New River cut
south of the turn at Bahia Mar, the northeast side of the
Las Olas Bridge, the southwest side of the Sunrise
Boulevard Bridge and the western portion of Lake Santa
Barbara. Spectator boats must be in place by 4 p.m.
Grandstand seating is available at Hugh Taylor Birch
State Park. Viewing can also be found at many waterfront
restaurants and at Huizenga Plaza.
Homes and businesses are also encouraged to partici-
pate in the Shoreline Decorating Extravaganza, sponsored
by Universal Property and Casualty Insurance Company.
Judging will be held, 6 to 10 p.m., Thursday Dec. 10. Call
954-767-0686 or www.winterfestparade.com.

The Pompano Beach Boat Parade will reach new
heights for its 47th year as the Goodyear Blimp flies over-
head, leading the procession as grand marshal.
The parade, touted as the oldest continuing floating
holiday procession and organized by the Greater Pompano
Beach Chamber of Commerce, kicks off 6:30 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 13. Organizers say the blimp, which makes
its home in Pompano Beach and turned 30 in November,
is an appropriate pick.
The route begins in Lake Santa Barbara and heads
north on the Intracoastal to the Hillsboro Boulevard
Bridge. Entry is free. A captain's meeting will be held
Wednesday, Dec. 9 at Aquamarina Hidden Harbour, 2315
NE 15th St. in Pompano Beach.
Don't have a boat? Become part of the parade by rid-
ing on the lead yacht. Tickets are $55 per person. Cost
includes a prime rib buffet and open bar.
For more information, or to enter your boat in the
parade, please call the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber
of Commerce at 954-941-2940, or visit the website:
www.pompanobeachchamber.com.

Palm Beach County
The Palm Beach Holiday Boat Parade, formerly
known as the Holiday Boat Parade of the Palm Beaches,
sets sail with a new name and added festivities.
The procession will start at 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5.
Boaters will travel from Peanut Island, north up the
Intracoastal to the Jupiter lighthouse in Jupiter. About

Parade planner:

No need to go

overboard on cost
BY BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL
Waterfront News Writer
Ready, set, sparkle. Many boaters are hauling out Santa
hats, unraveling strands of lights and getting ready to party
on floating holiday processions South Florida's own
winter tradition.
Current economic conditions aren't expected to
result in a downturn in entries and spectators, organ-
izers say.
Several events, such as the Pompano Beach parade, have
free entry for vessels.
Despite the cost of gas and decorating, boaters are find-
ing ways to participate because it's become an annual tradi-
tion for them, said Ric Green, president of the Greater
Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce which puts on the
Pompano Beach Boat Parade.
"We are hearing from some people they can't afford to
come out. But we're countering that they don't have to go,
pardon the pun, overboard. For whatever little bit you can do,
we're encouraging them to participate."
This year, the parades will be a mix of highflying fun,
star power and plenty of hometown pride. Organizers are
making plans to up the awe factor by bringing back long
favored customs, coupled with new additions.
Upcoming festivities include the Goodyear blimp
making it debut as grand marshal of the Pompano
Beach Boat Parade on Sunday, Dec. 13. The airship
will lead the procession, now entering its 47th year,
flying above decorated entries. It's an appropriate
choice, considering the blimp makes its home in the
city, Green said.
Another first will be Santa arriving via a U.S. Coast
Guard helicopter at the end of the route.
Elsewhere, there'll be shining lights and shining stars
when Kim Kadashian and Alonzo Mourning serve as grand
marshals of the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade,
taking on the theme of "That's Entertainment," Saturday,
Dec. 12, in Fort Lauderdale.
Further south, the bright lights of "Hooray for
Hollywood" will shine on the Key Largo Boat Parade, also
on Dec. 12, in Key Largo.
Other activities include a family fun festival at the Palm
Beach Holiday Boat Parade on Saturday, Dec. 5. Rides and
games will be held 3 to 8 p.m. at Kelsey Park in Lake Park.
Admission is one new unwrapped gift to benefit Toys for
Tots. The procession starts at 6 p.m.

Snook plentiful in remote Everglades' backcountry

BY ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Fishing Columnist
"Get your hand out of the water fast," Don Causey warned
me. "There are bull sharks here and they're aggressive."
That was important because we were catching fish and
we weren't using a landing net. Of course we had one; we just
weren't using it.
We were deep in Everglades National Park backcountry,
searching for snook and redfish in a maze of look-alike man-
grove islands, creeks and ponds too shallow for most boats.
You want to know its whereabouts?
Go straight from hereabouts to thereabouts and turn right.
You can't miss it. That's the most I can reveal. Don guesses
he's been back there about 50 times without seeing anyone he
didn't bring. If he sees you, he'll blame me and feed me to
those bull sharks.
He warned me they will follow a hooked fish right up to
the boat and snatch it away, so you don't want your hand over
the side a moment longer than necessary.
"They're very aggressive," he reminded me again as I
brought a snook out of the water and dropped it back over-
board. Usually when releasing a fish, I hold it in the water a
few moments to make sure it's all right.
There was a splash.
"Did you see that?" Don asked. I didn't. "Bull shark,"
he said.

Don Causey shows off one of many snook he caught in an
area of Everglades' backcountry that he holds secret. He
quit keeping score at 33 that day.
I ordered it to go away, claiming we found the fish
first. The bluff didn't work. Once in a while, in the shal-
lowest water, we could see the bulls' dorsal fins poking
above the surface.
When there was a lull in the action we'd move. As soon
as we started getting bites again, the sharks would reappear -
the same ones each time, we thought, following us around.
They were a pair, freeloading off our success. One of
us would hook a snook or a ladyfish and there'd be a wake
in the water, heading our way. We brought our fish in as
quickly as we could.

Once there was a loud slurp and splash I think a drop
or two hit us as a shark bit a snook off Don's line no more
than six feet away. That was the only one we saw them get.
A lowering tide exposed gray mud banks with the texture
of soft clay. Once I overthrew a bucktail jig onto one of those
and couldn't pull it loose so we eased the boat over there. I
couldn't tell what the hook was snagged on.
"This looks like a good place to get out of the boat and
stretch our legs and you know what," I said.
"No it isn't," Don said, and in a moment I saw why: My
lure wasn't snagged on anything. The mud alone held it in a
tight grip. Pulling was useless. To free it, I had to extend the
rod over it and lift.
Everglades' deepest backcountry is among the least
accessible parts of the national park. Once there, you'd have a
hard time finding your way out without a GPS unit.
Where we went, it's so shallow even at high tide -
that we had to haul a canoe on Don's flats skiff. Much of the
time, we were on water only half a paddle blade deep.
In places like that, unless your boat floats on just a few
inches of water, you need to mind the depth very carefully. It's
seldom possible to get an outboard up on plane. It's no place
for boaters without experience in extreme shallows.
You'd better not go aground. If you run your bow into a
mud bank like the one that tried to swallow my jig, you could

Everglades' Snake Bight to be designated pole and troll zone

BY ARNOLD MARKOWITZ
Waterfront News Fishing Columnist
In a dream, the government
tells you it's considering something
and you say, "All right but do it this
way, not that way," and the govern-
ment does as you say.
Ha ha.
Then the government puts the
plan on a map, explains it and asks
you if it looks okay. You suggest a
few refinements and the government
says, "Great, we'll do those."
Hilarious, yes?
At the dream's climax, the government asks if you think
they're going about this in the right way.
Your hat flies off and you faint, like a character in an old-
time comic strip.
The story, about a plan to make Everglades National
Park's superb but stressed Snake Bight fishing grounds into a
pole and troll zone, is true.
Yes, I've always had vivid dreams, but 20 other fishing-
doers attended the same November meeting I did in
Homestead, and more had the same peculiar experience the
next evening at Key Largo.
We can't all be dreaming.
Snake Bight's future designation as a pole and troll zone
will mean we can run our combustion engines to get there, but
not on the 8,000 or so acres of shallow-bottom water in the
bight itself.
Once on the flats, we'll have to move our boats with push
poles and electric trolling motors, easily raised above the sen-
sitive grass beds beneath the propellers.
Another option will be to tote a canoe or kayak on the
outboard skiff, park off the flats and paddle in.
This will be a pilot project, a sensible alternative to pre-
liminary plans that envisioned vast areas of half-million-acre
Florida Bay off limits to combustion engines.
Anyone in fishing could have predicted the objections
that followed. Everglades Superintendent Dan Kimball and
his staff saw quickly that such a notion's minuscule public
support would be overwhelmed by opposition.
What of it? Well, without wide support that means

This is a diagram of Snake Bight, which Everglades National
Park is preparing to designate a pole and troll fishing zone.
Only push-poles, paddles and electric trolling motors will be
allowed over the shallow flat. Boaters can run combustion
engines only in the channels and the Jimmy's Lake idle-

public self-enforcement unpopular regulations can't be
made to stick. The park doesn't have nearly enough rangers
for enforcement and probably never will.
The park people did right. We did, too. Instead of
denouncing bad ideas and going away mad, many of us put
forth better ideas many so compelling and well-informed
that they couldn't be ignored. Kimball saw their merit.

"Local knowledge, just what we need," the super said
again and again. Kimball's office job doesn't let him out in the
field enough. He freely admits that many of the people attend-
ing his public hearings know the Everglades marine area
much better than he does, even after running the park since
early 2004.
One of the better ideas came from within. It was to iso-
late Florida Bay into a sub-plan, separately from the long
ongoing organization of a much larger general management
plan for how Everglades should be operated in the next 15
to 20 years.

'Alternative E'
Snake Bight's 8,000 or so acres are part of the half-
million-acre bay. That's still pretty vast, but separating it
tightened the focus on the most controversial parts of the
overall plan.
The bight is one of many shallow areas harmed by pro-
peller scarring, which tears up bay bottom sea grasses, gouges
trenches and causes general havoc to that crucial part of the
marine food chain's nursery system.
The bight's location is a short boat run east of the park's
Flamingo visitor center and launching ramps. That's bad for it
(so easy for careless outboarders to reach) and good for it -
so easy for rangers to enforce the regulations and for scientists
to monitor the flats' condition.
The approach now being taken to pole and troll zones

Admiralty

Maritime gifts

for the giving

BY MARK ERCOLIN
Waterfront News Admiralty Law Columnist
Wow, it seems like it was only five
months ago that the stores were first putting
out their Christmas decorations! And now
the holidays are upon us for real.
You may have noticed fewer offer-
ings in the way of whiz-bang gizmos and
gadgets in this shaky economy. Instead, it
seems the stores are emphasizing more
practical gifts, even some for the budget-
minded consumer.
That got me to thinking about what sort
of gifts would have a maritime legal flavor
and stay within a budget (obviously this
rules out boats or major tool sets). My per-
sonal solution is to find scholarly or fun
books and DVDs for friends with an interest
in the admiralty field. So, in no particular
order, I offer a short list of gift idea. If you
are a consistent reader of this column, you
too likely have friends with similar tastes.
I begin with a suggestion of books.
Some may have recently gone out of print,
but could be worth searching for anyway:
*"Admiralty and Maritime Law" by
Thomas Schoenbaum: This is the classroom
"hombook" on the subject of admiralty law.
It offers most of the principles of modem
maritime law in a generally concise manner,
and is a good starting point for gaining an
understanding of those principles. But, a
word of caution to you do-it yourself types
- this book is not an admiralty lawyer in a
can! In fact, if you used it as your sole
source to take the test for certification in
admiralty law in Florida, you probably
wouldn't pass. Trust me, I know the folks
who write the test.
*"Courts of Admiralty in Colonial
America" by David Owen and Michael
Tolley: Sadly, I just found out this volume is
now out of print and appears to be expensive
if you can find it. However, I include it just
because it really is a great book that looks

into the procedures and cases conducted in
the admiralty courts of colonial America,
and how they still affect law and procedure.
*"American Maritime Documents
1776-1860" by Douglas Stein: For those
who love pictures of and collect old legal
documents and enjoy their history, I highly
recommend this book published by the
Mystic Seaport Museum. The volume not
only includes letters of marque (i.e. the
granting of a license to become a privateer),
but also old bills of lading, marine insurance
declaration pages (many with notes), char-
ter party contracts, crew manifests, and
much, much more.
*"The Prize Game" by Donald Petrie:
This book ic\ ic i s lti legal history of priva-
teering and its relationship with piracy from
the time of the Middle Ages to the
American Civil War. It's not only a fun read,
but very well researched.
And now, some suggested DVD's:
*"High Wind In Jamaica" (1965):
Anthony Quinn and James Coburn are
Caribbean pirates trying to make a living in
the mid 19th century when a group of chil-
dren stowaway on their vessel during a raid.
While the film has its amusing parts, it's
never cute and is a rather good study of
human character. Moreover, it includes
some very good scenes of a piracy trial.
Lessons to be learned from this movie
include, don't have kids and "no good deed
goes unpunished."
"I nihlll On The Bounty" (1935): This
is the version with Charles Laughton as
Capt. Bligh and Clark Gable as Fletcher
Christian. Do not even attempt to compare
it to the far inferior 1962 version with
Brando. While highly melodramatic, the
movie does a good job of depicting the
harshest aspects of being a seaman during
the days of the tall sailing ships. It also has

Dead

Too few boat

show bargains

BY BOB E. SHERMAN
Waterfront News Columnist
This year marked the 50th anniversary
of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat
Show. The first was held at Fort
Lauderdale's War Memorial Auditorium
with 13 exhibitors. Now War Memorial is
an offsite parking location for the show at
Bahia Mar. The parking costs more today
than the show did in the 1960s. In fact,
admission was free until 1970.
When parking costs are not shown in
advertising materials, you know it will be
expensive. A phone call to boat show organ-
izers Show Management revealed that park-
ing at War Memorial would cost between $6
and $10. I didn't understand the range.
Maybe a Mercedes pays more than a Ford.
So, I parked at the Las Olas Riverfront
for a mere $15 flat rate.
As Gordon Gekko said in the film
"Wall Street'" greed is good. So even there
were no spots, cars kept pouring in. We
knew we were being gouged, but the ride to
the show on the Jungle Queen was fun.
When boarding the Jungle Queen, the
attendant asked for my drivers license,
which he ran through some electronic
gizmo. I expect the spam and junk mail to
start arriving soon.
I didn't notice any special displays or
events honoring the boat show's 50th
anniversary. The crowds were average on
the day I went. With the economy being
what it is, you'd think promoters would
have run specials to increase traffic. At least
the admission price was the same as last
year. I guess the Las Olas parking garage
didn't get the memo.
When it to comes to inspecting boats,
many boat builders still have the "by
appointment only" policy. Some good judg-
ment is in order here. When I worked at
mega-yacht builder Denison Marine, a
young man came into our temporary trailer

office dressed in cutoff jeans and a sweat-
shirt. My boss told me to tell him we
weren't hiring. I yelled back, "He's got his
checkbook out and wants to buy a boat." Six
months later we were sea trialing For Your
Eyes Only.
Later that year I was at the boat show
aboard a brokerage boat, a 100-foot
Broward. I was just hanging out trying to
look like I knew something about some-
thing. Everyone decided that they were
going for lunch and left me alone. I'm told
not to let anyone aboard unless they look
like they can afford the boat. This eliminates
all my relatives and friends.
As fate would have it, someone came
along that I actually recognized, hydroplane
racer Bemie Little, and he wanted to inspect
the boat. I showed him around and kept my
mouth shut. I was wise enough to realize
that he had forgotten more about yachts
than I knew.
At this year's show I did look at one of
the boats on my lotto wish list, the 52-foot
Krogen Express. This is a boat I could live
on. I was just reaching for my credit card
when my wife announced that the shower
was too small. At a cost of over $1 million
- more than my 1994 Sea Ray is worth -
I guess it's not unreasonable to expect a lit-
tle bigger shower.
All this boat shopping was making me
thirsty. I would soon find out that in addition
to parking fees, beer sales were making up
the difference in lower show attendance.
All in all, it was an enjoyable day and
the ride back on the Water Taxi was fun
except that if paying $7 for a Bud were not
bad enough, the head on the Water Taxi was
temporarily out of service. It's a good thing
I could only afford one beer.

*"The Caine Mutiny" (1954): With due apologies to Tom
Cruise's and Jack Nicholson's performances in "A Few Good
Men'" I believe this movie has one of the best depictions of a
court martial to be presented in a piece of fictional cinema.
Moreover, Humphrey Bogart's performance as the mad Capt.
Queeg and Fred MacMurray's as a spiteful instigator may
have been the best of their distinguished careers. By the way,
the rumor that "The Caine Mutiny" was based on an actual
case is just an urban legend. Then again, if you happen to
board a ship and the captain begins to talk about stolen straw-
berries while rubbing a couple of ball bearings in his hand,
you may want to change your itinerary.
*"Reap The Wild Wind" (1942): This was DeMille's

profiteering owner of a Florida salvage company (yes, it is
allegedly a work of fiction). The movie sweeps from
storms to courtroom scenes, and from dark alleys to dra-
matic diving shots. The whole story culminates with "The
Duke" getting eaten by a giant squid, and Ray Milland
(remember, he's the handsome and noble admiralty attor-
ney) ending up with the girl. Let's face it it doesn't get
any better than that!
Well, those are some of my ideas for offering holiday
cheer to others. Hopefully, whatever gifts you may find for
your friends, it will be the right ones. Happy holidays!

Snook season in Florida will be closed from Dec. 15 to
Jan. 31. You can still fish for them, but all snook you catch
must be released during the closed season. To avoid seri-

Next on park agenda: Enforcement, scientific monitoring

---am-I .91. *g. IV---
owes credit to the "Alternative E" group of Keys guides, busi-
ness people and anglers, to Audubon of Florida, the Nature
Conservancy, the Keys National Marine Sanctuary advisory
council and these associations: National Parks Conservation,
Keys Fishing Guides, Coastal Conservation, Key Largo
Fishing Guides.
It also owes credit to park staff members who are open to
better ideas than their own, and to see the merit in them.
Those organizations and many individual anglers culled
original alternative plans called A, B, C and D, tweaked ideas
that looked like keepers and added their own. They offered
suggestions that all or most of us could live with.
One was to designate just one area of the bay for a pole
and troll zone pilot project, to enforce the rules there actively
and to keep close tabs on how well or poorly it works. Make
adjustments if necessary as time goes by, proponents said.
Don't impose restrictions all over the place before learning all
that the first zone can teach.
Quite a lot of people can look at the results so far and say
"Hey, that's what I told them to do."
The location suggested most often was Snake Bight for
the popularity of its fishing, nearness to the Flamingo visitor
center and easy accessibility to rangers and park scientists. It's
badly stressed by propeller scars, the wounds caused by care-
less boaters who go aground in the bight and try to power their
way out.

A work in progress
The earlier plans were not entirely wasted, for they fea-
tured convincing documentation of prop scars in many parts

of Florida Bay. In a series of public hearings Dave Hallac,
chief biologist of Everglades, showed us numerous slides of
flats scratched, scraped, ripped and ditched by boat props -
newer wounds crossing old ones, still unhealed after decades.
The minutiae of pole and troll zones were picked
apart. People argued about depth: should outboards be
raised up where the water is 3 feet deep? Two feet?
Shouldn't channels through and alongside the shallows be
marked better, so boaters who run aground can't assert the
innocent mistake alibi?
And anyway, what was the sense of making new regula-
tions if there weren't going to be enough rangers on the water
to enforce them?
Through all that, despite some differences between fish-
ing interests and those of pure conservation, there was gener-
al agreement that the flats are in trouble.
Something should be done, most of us said, but what and
how to go about it? People who spoke up at public hearings
told park staff that existing pole and troll zones work well at
five-island Fort DeSoto Park in Pinellas County and Mosquito
Lagoon in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge near
Canaveral National Seashore.
Go up and check those out, shallow-water fishermen told
Kimball, Hallac, head planner Fred Herling and others. They
did and they were glad.
"When we talked with the Pinellas County environment
people about Fort DeSoto, we got some very important les-
sons," Hallac said. "The first thing they said was that enforce-
ment is really critical. The second thing was that we should be
sure to mark the zone well, another no-brainer. The third thing
they said was to use good education materials."

"At Merritt Island, they said to use a small idle speed
buffer outside of where you want the zone, so people don't
come zooming up to the flats on plane."
Snake Bight is a baylet off larger Florida Bay, which
spreads from the southern coast of the mainland to the
Intracoastal Waterway on the inside margin of the Florida
Keys. There are three ways in Snake Bight channel, run-
ning roughly south to north on the west side, Tin Can channel
across the south margin and Jimmy's Lake, a deep notch in
that edge of the bight where power boaters can putter in at idle
speed before raising their engines.
"We want to use as many of the existing sign posts as we
can," Hallac said, adding only enough to mark the channels at
quarter-mile intervals. An extra large sign at the ramp will
present a detailed map. GPS mapping companies are expect-
ed to add the zone to their navigation charts.
Next on the pole and troll agenda: Completion of 3-
year enforcement and scientific monitoring plans, design-
ing and placing the signs and creating a public education
plan that will show boaters where the edges are so they
won't run aground there.
"We have all the funding," Hallac said. "We've given
ourselves a deadline of about a year from now."
Feedback: Beg to differ? Have a better idea? Readers are
encouraged to react and respond to witzfish@att.net.

Artist fondly recalls sailing trips with late husband

Who's who among South Florida's boaters? Meet
the people working and enjoying the boating lifestyle in a
monthly feature that asks readers to share just what it is
that makes boating in Florida personal.
If you would like to tell your story, please e-mail
editor@waterfront-news.com. Use the words "Boater's
profile" in the subject line and include your name and
phone number where you can be reached during the day.
You can also fax 954-524-9464 or write to Boater's
Profile, The Waterfront News, 1515 SW First Ave., Fort
Lauderdale, FL, 33315.
Meet Pompano Beach resident Pat Russell Anderson,
owner of "My Own Cruising Journal" Islandwear and
Gifts in Lighthouse Point, and the Pat Anderson Art
Gallery. Last year she became a widow after husband and
sailing partner, Pete, lost his battle to cancer.
Type and name of boat?
A Hardin 45-foot ketch, 16 tons of comfort. Her name
is Barefoot Elegance and her inflatable Achilles dingy is
named FootPrint.
What made you choose this boat?
She was a knockout beauty at a broker's local dock
when we discovered her while cruising the waterways in
Lighthouse Point. I wanted it and convinced Pete he did
too. We had steady corporate jobs then and the time and
youth to fix her up at our own dock. Pete, who was raised
on Cape Cod, knew sailboats and he was sales manager
for Irwin Yachts and had designed and help build at Irwin.
As an artist, I painted, varnished, sanded and decorated.
Great teamwork for a gorgeous boat. Fun.
Where is it docked?
Barefoot Elegance is right at my dock at my house on
a private end of a deepwater canal in Pompano Beach,
seven minutes to the Atlantic via the Hillsboro Inlet.
Who accompanies you when taking the boat out?
It was fine with just the two of us and the animals we
had with us at the time, mostly two cats. When cruising to
the Abacos, it was fun to catch fish and share it with the cats.
Sailboats do make nice fishing boats it's quite a technique
to luff in the wind to stop the boat to reel the catch up.
How did you get involved with boating?
I always lived by the shore and my parents had boats.
Pete introduced me to his Irwin 21-foot and taught me
step by step about weather and how a sailboat is like an
eggshell over the waves. We got our Irwin 30-foot because
I wanted to stand up to get dressed and sleep in comfort.
What's the one item you can't live without when
you're aboard?
My cruising journal. I have 19 big journals, thousands
of pages long with hundreds of artworks mostly done
plein air, meaning painted while there, not from photos.

U Up

Artist and boater Pat Anderson during a Winterfest
Boat Parade in Fort Lauderdale.
Scariest experience on the water?
One Thanksgiving we cruised with the Hillsboro Inlet
Sailing Club to Peck Lake in northern Palm Beach County
when there was an unannounced storm. The ocean rolled over
the spit of land where we were tucked in at the mangroves into
the Intracoastal. Other boats ran their engines all night to hold
anchor. Dawn revealed a devastated beach with hundreds of
trees turned into driftwood. On a walk, we discovered huge
fossilized clam shells 1-inch thick and five inches wide that

were dredged during the night by the stormy surf. The beach
was a cliff and the ocean fumes of puffy salt clouds were
rolling in the waterway. We all pulled anchor and enjoyed our
Thanksgiving dinner together a little south of that scary mess.
Furthest distance traveled?
On a three-month cruise we went to the Marquesas
Keys, Fort Jefferson, the Dry Tortugas, up the Gulf to
Tarpon Springs, returning through Cape Sable to
Pompano Beach. I painted, wrote, fished and loved every
minute of it with Pete.
Most memorable experience?
Every time the dock lines are left on the pilings, there
is a sense of independence and exhilaration for the new
day's adventure. One holiday Pete cooked a turkey in the
convection oven during a cruise to Little Harbor. He
defrosted it by hanging it over the stem while he relaxed
in the hammock tied between the masts. The aroma of
turkey roasting in this pristine harbor was unique.
What do you like the most about sailing in South
Florida?
Parties. Once a year the Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club
creates a circle raft-up in Lake Boca for an aerial photo
taken by the Goodyear Blimp. We had 80 boats this year.
Of course I painted the excitement from the stem view of
Barefoot Elegance.
What do you like the least?
Wakes made by inconsiderate boaters. One time our
TV fell off the shelf. Another time my Tervis glass jumped
out of the galley holder and bounced hard on the salon
floor. It didn't break but I lost my rum and coke.
As told to Jennifer Heit

"Bruce's lyrics are very, very dense, sometimes com-
plicated. I think that, in the beginning, some of his lyrics
probably didn't make sense to him. It made him have a cer-
tain feeling."
"I'm still in there, trying to figure it out."
Nor does he understand how the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame could have inducted Springsteen without E Street. "We
have been together as a band for 33, 34 years. And we con-
tributed so much'" he says. "It's a bunch of suits who make
these decisions."
But he takes the high road: "When a fan says, 'Man, you
saved my life; I heard Jungleland ... and I cried... and I felt joy
in my life again,' that's my hall of fame."

Encore, encore
He's had problems far greater than any Hall of Fame con-
cerns: the knees; three hip replacements; two eye surgeries; a
pacemaker; sleep apnea. He's avoiding back surgery because

"the down time is so long."
Powerful narcotics after the knee replacements muddled
his thinking, triggering depression and self-doubt so he
swapped them for a diet-and-fitness regime.
"I stopped smoking' pot. I stopped doing any of that stuff,"
except for a rare, light beer, watered down by ice.
He likes the new feeling of playing with a clear head.
"The stage is a healing floor no matter how bad you
hurt."
"I told Bruce, when this all started, 'One day we'll dance
together again.' And he says, 'I'll be waiting."'
Last weekend, Clemons, still walking with difficulty, did
dance. It wasn't the old antics leaping onto a speaker or
lying on the stage, legs waving wildly. At Madison Square
Garden, the joy erupted from the Big Man's upper body as he
swayed, with rhythm and grace.
But how long will the dance go on?
Retirement is "something I think about," says Clemons.
"I'll be 70 years old in a couple of years. I don't know how
much energy I'll have left. That energy, I want to spend with
my family."
Let's be clear: His definition of retirement is different
from most people's.
"I really believe that this is something that is going to
go on forever. When I say retiring, I don't mean stop play-
ing music."
But he's mindful of the ticking clock. "There's been a lot
of death in the last few years," says Clemons.
Two linchpins of that early circle Federici and
Springsteen assistant Terry Magovern are gone.
Recently, they lost Springsteen's cousin, assistant road
manager Lenny Sullivan.
For Clemons, it accentuates the gift of time.
"I know that one day I'm going to die'," he says. "I want
to accomplish as much as I can before I do."
