tly held its official spelling bee,
fifth through eighth graders com-

peted for the coveted prize. Following the
bee, fourth graders from throughout the
district lined up for a primer bee, giving
these young spellers an opportunity to
feel the excitement of competition.
Taking the tournament as seriously
as their older counterparts, the fourth
grade contestants exhibited skill and
nerves of steel until only one speller,
Mishaila Berman of Lee Elementary
School, was left standing.
"Casserole, C-A-S-S-E-R-O-L-E, Casse-
role," declared the precocious student.
The applause that followed said it all: con-
gratulations and see you next year.

Quanta Barfield Signs

College Scholarship

By Jacob Bembry
Greene Publishing, Inc.
It took a year, but
Quanta Barfield finally
realized his dream of
signing a scholarship to
play college football.
Barfield did the
work himself,
sending a film to
Georgia Mili-
tary College, a
two-year col-
lege in
t Milledgeville,
i. Ga., to set
the wheels
in motion.
..'i "I sent it
(the film) last

year," he said, "but they
had already given out
the scholarships and
didn't have any money
left."
Barfield said that he
had called the coach
again this year and
asked him once again
about the possibility of
playing for the college.
"I've already seen
your film," the coach
told Barfield, "and we'd
love you to come play for
us."
Barfield said that he
had originally been re-
cruited by Illinois State
University last year, but

that the coaching staff
had all been fired at the
end of the season, so he
did not get to play there.
While sitting out a
year of football, Barfield
tried to find ways to keep
himself out of trouble,
including working at his
father's restaurant,
Barfield Supreme
Eatery in Valdosta, Ga.
While playing high
school football in Madi-
son, Barfield was nick-
named "the Missile" by
Greene Publishing, Inc.
writer Michael Curtis.

-4 -HEALTH AWARENESS

The Power Of Prevention
(NAPSA)-More and more people are embracing
the notion that health care prevention plays a major
role in deterring disease.
Staying in shape and watching what you eat can
prevent many diseases-and that includes endocrine-
related disorders such as diabetes, thyroid disor-
ders, osteoporosis, obesity and conditions related to
numerous glands and hormones.
A comprehensive, free resource designed to edu-
cate patients about ways to successfully manage
their conditions is now available to the consumer.
The patient-friendly magazine published by the
American College of Endocrinology (ACE) features
articles written mostly by expert endocrinologists
with years of clinical experience. Articles feature
useful health information and tips for lifestyle man-
agement. Nearly a million copies of the publication,
Power of Prevention(r), are currently in circulation.
The inaugural issue was devoted to thyroid dys-
function, which affects 27 million Americans, while
the second focused on the diabetes epidemic.
According to former ACE president Dr. Donald
Bergman, "The Power of Prevention(r) initiative is
designed to give patients the tools and information
to know what to ask and expect from their health
care providers during their visit."
The third issue will tackle the national epidem-
ic of obesity by defining the condition, dispelling
myths about weight loss, discussing various treat-
ment options and highlighting the benefits of living
a healthy lifestyle.
The issue will focus on the fact that obesity is a
biological, preventable and treatable disease.
As a disease, it is at the core of many other
chronic illnesses-type 2 diabetes, diseases of the
heart and cardiovascular system, some types of can-
cer, depression, arthritis, disordered breathing, de-
conditioning and gastrointestinal disorders.
Obesity is not a condition, a character flaw, a
consequence of poor willpower or anyone's fault.
Contributing factors to obesity include heredity and
one's environment. Making positive lifestyle
changes can help a person achieve a healthier
weight, and the issue will offer helpful, practical ad-
vice.
The publication can be found in any local en-
docrinologist's office. An online version is available
for downloading at www.powerofpre vention.com.
Subscriptions are also available by e-mailing
subscribe@ powerofprevention.com or by calling
(904) 353-7878.

With Valentine's Day right around the corner,
the smell of love fills the air. Whether it's love for
your spouse, your children, or your parents every-
one has someone that they can share a small token
of love with.
Even though many people feel that holidays
were invented by the retail industry of the world, we
still all go rush out and buy something special for
that "special someone."
It's amazing how even the smallest token of
love/appreciation can make someone feel. Everyone
has the desire, deep down inside, to feel loved and
appreciated. It's a "need" that God planted in us
when he made Adam and Eve.
A simple gesture, sometimes, is all it takes to
bring a smile to someone's face. A simple card or a
box of candy could truly make someone's day.
As we go around in this crazy world/life of
ours.... sometimes it's easy to forget about everyone
else but ourselves. It is so easy to get wrapped up in
Sour own feelings and in our own problems. Valen-
tine's Day is one day that is made to step back and
think of someone else.
I encourage every one of you to find someone to
send something special to. Try to think of someone
that might not get a gift from someone else.....your
neighbor, a co-worker, a friend, or the widow down
the street. What if the only thing that they get, is
your gift? Imagine the smile on their face!
Isn't that what love is all about?
Until then..... I'll see you around the town.

Bill Gaither Yemen

Hope everyone is doing well.
It was a busy weekend for my family and me last
week as we went and saw the Bill Gaither Home-
coming Concert on Friday night in Tallahassee. I
saw quite a few other people from Madison and Lee
there, including Gene Clark and Hazel Phillips and
Jimmie and Latrelle Ragans.
Sonny Lasseter will celebrate his birthday on
Wednesday, Feb. 10. Ashley Kervin will celebrate her
big day on Feb. Thursday, 11. K.C. Medders will cele-
brate her birthday on Saturday, Feb. 13. Jarod Web,
Rich Quackenbush, Greg Simmons and Shannon
Wirick will celebrate their big day on Tuesday, Feb.

Question:
What should I get my wife for Valentines Day?

Answer:
You are asking ME? I feel like I need to add a
disclaimer to this answer because I know I am on
thin ice. Having that said I can tell you that in
our office we hear about all the valentines
presents, the mothers day gifts, the anniversaries,
Christmas.. .you get the idea. We hear about the
ones that were wonderful and those that were not.
I struggle myself, so it is with a bit of trepidation
that I share some rules of thumb I have learned
from the ladies.
The most important rule I have heard is, do
NOT give anything that "plugs in." I don't
understand this rule, but I guess I am not
supposed to understand. I thought that an
appliance that would make daily work easier
would be nice. I learned not to give any work
related appliances for Valentines. That means no
fancy vacuum cleaners, no floor waxers, no
dishwashers, or clothes washers. No electric food
choppers or Ronco "Set it and Forget it" rotisserie
ovens. If you get it, you can forget it!
I can tell you that a number of wives ask how
much dental bleaching costs. They are hoping
their husband will spring for the cost of their
getting a dazzling smile. They may have been
trying the store bought systems which have not
worked and now they want the real deal.
Just be sure to give them a gift which will
bring them joy. Smile whitening, it is the gift
which keeps giving.

Over the past few
months, the country of
Yemen has been popping
up in the news more and
more. What is it that
makes this somewhat
insignificant nation lo-
cated at the base of the
Arabian Peninsula so
increasingly important?
For one thing,
Yemen occupies a strate-
gically important posi-
tion where the Red Sea
flows into the Gulf of
Aden. In ancient times,
this was a crossroads of
caravans bringing
spices from the east. To-
day, it sits adjacent to
major shipping lanes.
Its strategic location be-
lies the poverty of the
poorest nation (per capi-
ta annual income of
$600) in the Persian Gulf
region.
In the late 20th Cen-
tury, Yemen was a little
known front of the Cold
War one part of the
country with heavy
British influence waged
a civil war with their
Communist cousins.
Eventually as is usually
the case, nationalism tri-
umphed over ideology,
but poverty, poor gover-
nance and the remnants
of prior strife gave radi-
cal Islamic fundamen-
talism a foothold. Today,
a major component of
al-Qaeda operates from
the wilds of Yemen.
In October 2000,
these terrorists attacked
the destroyer USS Cole
while it was refueling off

the coast of Aden. Nine-
teen sailors were killed
and many more wound-
ed in this heinous sui-
cide attack. We have had
mixed success rounding
up and punishing the
thugs who planned this
terrible deed that fore-
shadowed the horrors of
9/11 a year later.
More than a few of
the Guantanamo Bay de-
tainees are Yemeni. The
Obama Administration
planned to repatriate
them to Yemen but
those plans are cur-
rently on hold. It
seemed that the Yemeni
government planned to
give the repatriated
prisoners a get-out-of-
jail-free card we don't
want to fight these
same people a second
time!
Most recently, the
Christmas bomber
with exploding under-
wear trained in Yemen
before setting out on
his deadly but fortu-
nately, unsuccessful
mission. He has been
tied to al-Qaeda re-
cruiter Anwar al-Awla-
ki, a radical imam who
spent time in northern
Virginia. Awlaki had

contact with two of the
9/11 conspirators ac-
cording to the 9/11 Re-
port.
The United States
currently has about 200
special operations per-
sonnel in-country train-
ing Yemeni soldiers on
counter terrorism. The
Obama Administration
intends to send more
this year. We currently
are funding the Yemeni
military and economic
development to the tune
of about $200 million a
year in a low profile
way Our military heli-
copters give the local
constabulary important
mobility and quick re-
action capability. This
type of mobility and lo-
gistics capability is im-
portant in a large
nation with little inland
infrastructure and
mountainous terrain.
Our current effort
seems to be on-target for
this threat. This type of
mission is best handled
by special operators
who work with locals to
combat the threat in a
low profile, advisory
manner. It is doubtful
that the threat will grow
beyond its current size.

Who Was The First American On

The One Dollar Bill?

By Paul Neimann
This column has shared stories
of Americans whose contributions
include our nation's symbols (Fran-
cis Scott Key, wrote our national an-
them, "The Star Spangled Banner,"
and Francis Hopkinson, who de-
signed the American flag that Betsy
Ross had sewn); Americans whose
images have appeared on our curren-
cy (President Washington, Jefferson
and Lincoln, as well as Ben Franklin
and Alexander Hamilton, although
Hamilton was born in the West In-
dies); and Americans who have had
great institutions named after them
(James Smithson's Smithsonian In-
stitution, although he was a Brit who
never stepped foot in America).
We've also discussed Americans
who have helped form new political
parties (Presidents Jefferson and
Lincoln).
This week's story discusses all of
the above topics. So who was the
American who contributed one of
our nation's symbols in this story?
His name was Salmon Chase. He
was born in 1808 in Cornish, New
Hampshire. He was Secretary of the
Treasury in 1861 when he received a
letter from a man telling him that
God should be recognized on Ameri-
can coins. Chase agreed, and as a re-
sult, the phrase "In God We Trust"
first appeared on the one-cent penny
and on the two-cent coin in 1864 (yes,
there was such a thing as the two-
cent coin in 1864). In 1955, Congress
mandated that "In God We Trust" ap-
pear on all U.S. currency and Presi-

dent Eisenhower approved the
phrase as our nation's motto a year
later.
So who was the American whose
images have appeared on our curren-
cy in this story? For that matter, who
was the first person to appear on a $1
bill?
Think it was our first president,
George Washington?
Nope. Once again, it was Salmon
Chase. How could that be? And why
Salmon Chase?
Until 1860, the nation's currency
was printed by more than 1,600 local
banks, which resulted in thousands
of different localized versions of cur-
rency As a result, it was pretty easy
to produce counterfeit money Chase
was the main person behind stan-
dardizing the currency and establish-
ing our nation's banking system.
When President Lincoln appointed
him as Secretary of the Treasury, he
was responsible for designing the
new currency.
Since Chase had plans to pursue
the presidency himself, he felt that in-
serting his own image on the $1 bill
would enable him to impress the
largest number of voters. In 1862,
Chase's image was shown in the left-
hand corner of every $1 bill, while
George Washington didn't make his
debut on the $1 bill until 1869.
Later, in 1928, the Treasury hon-
ored Chase by putting his image on
the $10,000 bill. These bills were used
in bank transfers until 1946.
The next part of this story is
about an American who had a great

institution named after him. Who
would that be?
You guessed it ... Salmon Chase,
as in Chase National Bank, which be-
came Chase Manhattan Bank and is
now known as J.P Morgan Chase.
The bank was named in his honor
even though Salmon Chase had noth-
ing to do with the bank.
So what did he do for an encore?
He was a staunch abolitionist
who represented slaves prior to his
political career when he was a
lawyer. He was even more anti-slav-
ery than Lincoln was, as he even
pressed for slaves' rights to equality
and to vote. Before he was Treasury
Secretary he was a U.S. senator from
Ohio. Then he was governor of Ohio.
He sought the presidential nomina-
tion of the Republican party in 1860,
which he lost to Lincoln.
Speaking of the Republican par-
ty, Salmon Chase was one of the men
who helped form the party, but he
didn't stop there. In 1846 he helped
form the Free Soil Party by combin-
ing the Liberty Party with the Van
Buren Democrats of New York.
When President Lincoln nomi-
nated him as Chief Justice of the
Supreme Court in 1864, he served in
that role until his death in 1873. De-
spite all his accomplishments and
the legacy that he left behind, his
daughter died in poverty in 1899. She
is buried alongside her father.
So there you have it ... Salmon
Chase is probably the most accom-
plished American you've never
heard of. Until now.

Should You Convert to a Roth
IRA? New Laws in 2010 Bring
Opportunities to Consider

Provided by Brad Bashaw, Edward Jones
Legislation changes in 2010 could mean opportunities for you
to consider converting your traditional, SEP or SIMPLE IRA
to a Roth IRA. With a little preparation, you and your Edward
Jones financial advisor could determine that a Roth IRA is
right for your retirement strategy.
Overview of Legislative Changes
Currently, the modified adjusted gross income (MAGI)
limit to convert is $100,000, if you're married filing jointly or
single. If you're married and filing separately, you're not cur-
rently eligible (in 2009) to convert a traditional IRA to a Roth
IRA.
In 2010, the $100,000 MAGI limit will be eliminated, which
will allow anyone to convert. If you are married and filing sep-
arately, you will be eligible for conversion.
A conversion is usually reported as income for the tax
year the conversion takes place. However, in 2010 only, your
conversion amount will be split and reported as income for
tax years 2011 and 2012 unless you elect to report the entire
conversion amount on your 2010 taxes.
Due to the recent market declines, the value of your port-
folio is likely down. If your income is within certain limits, the
cost to convert your tax-deferred IRA (traditional, SEP or
SIMPLE) to a Roth IRA also will likely be lower.
The Benefits of Converting to a Roth IRA
You can have tax-free income in retirement.1
There are no required minimum distributions (RMDs).
You have access to the dollars you converted penalty free
before age 591/2.2
Conversions are allowed after age 701/2.
You can create a tax-free legacy for your heirs.
Tax Considerations
Your income tax liability on a conversion is based on the
value of investments held in your IRA when you convert to a
Roth IRA. The amount you convert will be included in your
taxable income in the year you convert. Converting your tax-
deferred IRA to a Roth IRA is not an all-or-nothing decision -
converting a portion of your IRA is also a strategy to consid-
er.
Contact your financial advisor today about steps to take for
your specific situation.
lAfive-year holding period also applies to earnings. Earnings
distributed from a Roth IRA may be subject to income tax and
a 10% penalty if the client has not satisfied the five-year hold-
ing period and is under age 591/2.
2A five-year holding period applies to each conversion.
Conversion dollars distributed from a Roth IRA may be sub-
ject to a 10% penalty if the client has not satisfied the five-
year holding period for the conversion and is under age 591/2.
Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors do not

situation with your tax advisor or legal professional for infor-
mation regarding, or issues concerning, the tax implications
of making a particular investment or taking any other action.

Greene Publishing, Inc. Salutes Boy Scouts On Their 100th Anniversary

This year is the 100th anniver-
sary of the Boy Scouts of America,
and in honor of these boys and
their volunteer leaders, Greene
Publishing, Inc. would like to
salute them.
The Boy Scouts is a community
organization, which gives physical
fitness training, as well as citizen-
ship training. There are six ranks:
Tenderfoot, Second Class, First
Class, Star, Life and Eagle. The Ea-

Scouts

gle Scout is the highest rank one
can achieve in the Boy Scouts.
Madison County has at least nine
known Eagle Scouts.
Former Scoutmasters
We would also like to salute
those men who gave their time and
energy to help these boys become
men: Scoutmasters Howell Ed-
wards, Harry McRae and Billy
Bunting.

Medal of Merit
Three Eagle Scouts have been
awarded the Medal of Merit for
saving the lives of others. In 1982,
at a church function, Tim Moffses,
along with Gard Gardner, saved a
friend from drowning. In the sum-
mer of 1976, Harvey and William
Greene helped others to rescue sev-
eral swimmers who had been
caught in an undertow. Among the
rescued were their father and sis-

- Past and Present

ter. These three men were awarded
the Medal of Merit from the Boy
Scouts.
Scouts From the Past
Howell Edwards was one of the
first Scoutmasters in Madison
County He took his scouts to Na-
tional Boy Scout Camp Philmont in
Cimmeron, New Mexico. Scouts
who went in 1980 included William
Edwards, Mark Akerman, Tommy

Moffses, Harvey Greene, Bill Mc-
Cain, Brad Beggs and Leland
Moore.
Values of the Boy Scouts
The Boy Scouts of America
strive to achieve a strong level of
American values. They strive to be
knowledgeable about the American
social, economic and political sys-
tems. They work hard to be emo-
tionally stable and to maintain

such traits as courage, leadership,
friendliness and to harbor high
self-reliance.
The Boy Scouts of America has
more than 300 local councils, which
also include Tiger Cubs, Cub Scout-
ing and Venturing.
Getting involved in Boy
Scouts is a great way to establish
strong relationships, while learn-
ing to hike, swim, fish and so
much more.

There are varying opinions as to
the origin of Valentine's Day. Some ex-
perts state that it originated from St.
Valentine, a Roman who was mar-
tyred for refusing to give up Chris-
tianity. He died on February 14, 269
A.D., the same day that had been de-
voted to love lotteries. Legend also
says that St. Valentine left a farewell
note for the jailer's daughter, who had
become his friend, and signed it
"From Your Valentine". Other aspects
of the story say that Saint Valentine
served as a priest at the temple during
the reign of Emperor Claudius.
Claudius then had Valentine jailed for
defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius
set aside February 14 to honour St.
Valentine.

Gradually, February 14 became
the date for exchanging love messages
and St. Valentine became the patron
saint of lovers. The date was marked
by sending poems and simple gifts
such as flowers. There was often a so-
cial gathering or a ball.
In the United States, Miss Esther
Howland is given credit for sending
the first valentine cards. Commercial
valentines were introduced in the
1800's and now the date is very com-
mercialised. The town of Loveland,
Colorado, does a large post office busi-
ness around February 14. The spirit of
good continues as valentines are sent
out with sentimental verses and chil-
dren exchange valentine cards at
school.

We have kicked off the 2010 Men's
Adult Baseball League season having
our first league meeting on January
30th in Madison. We want the local
communities to know that there is an
opportunity for men 18 years and old-
er to play baseball in an organized
league that is comprised of men from
several North Florida counties from
St. Johns to Leon and everything in
between. The next league workout
will be on February 13th at 1:30 pm at
Cantey field, located in Madison at
North Florida Community College.
This workout will serve to not only
work on some basic skills and to get

warmed up for the season but to meet
other players in your area and to
share details about what will be need-
ed for an individual to participate in
the league. This will be a league that
travels to play on Sunday afternoons
with opening day planned for March
14th. With local sponsors' support
and just a few good men wanting to
play catch again, the Men's
Adult Baseball League looks to make
this field of dreams something we can
all enjoy, on the diamond and outside
the lines.
Local registration is located at
