MA Academy, has not
been seen since Wednes-
day, Dec. 16, after an ar-
gument with his mother.
He was last seen headed
east from LATMA.

A structure fire destroyed a home on Brooklyn
Street in Madison on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 8:32 a.m..
A combination of smoke, wind, flames and a live
power line, whipping in the grass like a snake, con-
fronted firefighters who responded to the scene.
Fortunately, Madison Fire and Rescue was able
to contain the fire to a single home with no damage
to adjacent buildings.
According to MFR, the cause of the blaze was
electrical.
Madison Fire and Rescue, the Madison Police
Department, Madison County EMS and the Madison
County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.
There were no injuries in the fire.
The home's occupant was Terri Green. Lamar
Tookes was the owner.
The American Red Cross was called in to assist
the displaced family
For those wishing to help the family: The girl is
age 10 and she wears a girl's size 12.
The boy is age 12 and he wears medium shirts,

James Stephens
A memorial and graveside service
will be held for James Stephens on De-
cember 28, 2009 at 9 a.m. at the San Pe-
dro Cemetery. He was a good neighbor
and friend to many.
James Stephens, born on April 11,
1932, lived in Madison for 47 years. He
was a farmer, raising cows and hogs on
his farm south of Madison in the
Hopewell community. He also owned
and operated his logging business,
working primarily for Buckeye Cellu-
lose for approximately 20 years. He
died December 30, 2008 after an ex-
tended illness.
He is survived by three daughters -
Cheryl James and her husband Kem-
per "Skip" James of Madison; Jackie
Lancaster of Seagrove, North Caroli-
na; and Teresa Price from Shreveport,
Louisiana. He is preceded in death by
his son, Randy Stephens of Greenville,
Florida. Besides his children, he is
also survived by six grandchildren and
1 great granddaughter. Grandchildren
include Jim Stephens, son of deceased
Randy Stephens; Misty Lamb, daugh-
ter of Cheryl James; James Stephens
and Shantell Lancaster, son and
daughter of Jackie Lancaster; Trey
and Jennifer Norris, son and daughter
of Teresa Price; and one great-grand-
daughter, Zoe Stephens, daughter of
James and Laura Stephens of Col-
orado Springs, Colorado.

Greenville, died, Sunday,
December 20, at her
home in Greenville.
Funeral Services
will be held Thursday,
December 24, 2009, at 11
a.m. in the Greenville
Baptist Church. Burial
will follow in the Ever-
green Cemetery in
Greenville.
Visitation will be
Wednesday, December
23, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m.
at Beggs Funeral Home.
She was born in
Greenville and started
College at Palm Beach
Junior College. When
her youngest was four
years old, she moved to
Brandon in 1968, trans-
ferring to USF in 1970,
graduating in 1974.
She taught school in
Hilsborough County and
retired from the public
school system there in
1995. After retiring, she
moved back to
Greenville, where as a
volunteer, established
the Library at
Greenville Elementary
School with the help of
Barbara Mathis, Julia
Waldrep, William and
Nick, the custodians. A
Library any school
would be proud of.


Martha was an ac-
tive member of the
Greenville Baptist
Church serving in many
different areas over the
years. As a young moth-
er, she served for years
as a Den Mother, Presi-
dent of the PTA, Worthy
Matron of the Eastern
Star and taught Sunday
School.
She is survived by
three sons, Clinton E.
Brown, Jr. and wife Peg-
gy, Danie Albert Brown
and wife Mary, and
Bryan David Brown.;
one daughter, Martha
Luanne Ferrie; two sis-
tens, Joanne Putman
and Lettie Lou Brad-
shaw; one sister-in-law,
Rosie Leggett; eight
grandchildren, Leah
Farmer, Byran Brown,
Savannah Ferrie, Kristi-
na Brown, Clint Brown,
Rob Brown, Erica Brown
and Cody Brown all of
the Tampa Bay area.;
one great-grandchild,
Brynn Farmer.
She was preceded in
death by her parents,
Rev. Albert Lee Leggett
(Rooster) and Thelma
Mills (Sebbye) Leggett; a
brother, Rev. Al Leggett,
and her children's father
Clinton E. Brown (Bud-
dy).


The Jenkins family of Cherry Lake would
like to publicly thank each and everyone at
Madison Nursing Center for the wonderful
treatment George Robert (Bob) Jenkins re-
ceived while in your care.
Words can't explain what it meant to us for
your love, care and concerns for our loved one
while he was in your facility He is home now,
doing real well, but we would like to let every-
one know, if they have the need, that the Madi-
son Nursing Home is the best place for
receiving loving care for your loved ones.
May God bless each of you that made him
feel at home while he was in your care. You all
did an excellent job making his stay with you
as pleasant as possible. Thank you all again.

The television program "60 Minutes" recently did a dis-
turbing segment on the problem of Medicare fraud, which has
raised some questions for me. What are the steps Medicare re-
cipients need to take if they suspect fraud, and what can be
done to prevent it from happening?

Dear Charlie:
Medicare fraud has been a big problem for many years,
but because of the national health care debate going on right
now it has gotten a lot more attention lately Here's what you
should know.
Medicare Fraud
It's estimated that Medicare fraud cost taxpayers a stag-
gering $60 billion a year, making it one of the most profitable
crimes in America. In a nut shell, Medicare fraud happens
when Medicare is purposely billed by greedy doctors, shady
health care providers or scam artists for services or supplies
that were never provided or received. While there are many
types of Medicare fraud, one of the most common schemes is
phony billing for durable medical equipment such as wheel-
chairs, walkers, orthopedic braces, oxygen generators, breath-
ing machines, air mattresses and more.
What You Can Do
The best way for you to spot Medicare fraud is to review
your Medicare Summary Notices (MSN) or your Explanation
of Medicare Benefits (EOMB) whenever you get them. Be on
the lookout for things like charges for medical services or
equipment you didn't get, dates of services and charges that
look unfamiliar, or if you were billed for the same thing twice.
See Medicare.gov/basics/SummaryNo-tice.asp for help on
reading your MSN.
If you do spot any unusual or questionable charges, your
first step is to contact your doctor or health care provider. The
charge may just be a simple billing error. If, however, you can't
resolve the problem with the provider, your next step is to re-
port the questionable charges to Medicare at 800-633-4227. And
if you suspect fraud, contact the Department of Health and
Human Services Office of Inspector General Fraud hotline at
800-447-8477. It's also a good idea to report it to the Federal
Trade Commission's ID Theft hotline at 877-438-4338.
When you call, have the MSN or EOMB with the ques-
tionable charges handy because you'll need to give them: your
Medicare card number; the physician, supplier, and/or facili-
ty name where the service was supposedly provided; the date
the service was rendered; the payment amount approved and
paid by Medicare; as well as the reason you think Medicare
shouldn't have paid. And as an incentive, if the suspicious ac-
tivity you report turns out to be fraud, you may be eligible for
a reward of up to $1,000.
How to Protect Yourself
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and
the U.S. Department of Justice also offers a variety of tips to
help you protect yourself from becoming a victim of Medicare
fraud, including:
Guard your Medicare and Social Security numbers.
Treat them like you would treat your credit cards. If your
Medicare card is lost or stolen, report it immediately to Social
Security (800-772-1213) who will send you a replacement.
Be suspicious of anyone who offers you free medical
equipment or services and then requests your Medicare num-
ber.
Don't let anyone borrow or pay to use your Medicare ID
card.
Walk away if people approach you in parking lots,
shopping centers, or other public areas and offer free services,
groceries, transportation, or other items in exchange for your
Medicare number.
Hang up the phone if someone calls you claiming to be
conducting a health survey and asks for Medicare number.
Don't give your information to telephone marketers
who claim to be from Medicare or Social Security asking for
payment over the phone or Internet.

or reporting Medicare fraud or resolving your Medicare
billing errors, contact your state SMP program (formerly
called Senior Medicare Patrol) which provides free one-on-one
counseling and assistance. Visit www.smpresource.org or call

Merry Christmas, everyone. I hope that every-
one remembers the reason we celebrate this year is
the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I also
hope everyone stays healthy, warm, happy and has
plenty to eat during this season.
I'm sorry to see Cheryl Archambault resign as
town manager. Cheryl is a really nice person and I
hope she does well wherever her future endeavors
may take her.
My uncle, Carlton Bembry, died Saturday, Dec.
18, at 1 a.m. after a long battle with cancer. Local sur-
vivors include my father, Bobby Bembry, and my
aunt, Nina Dodd. Remember Uncle Carlton's chil-
dren, grandchildren and wife in your prayers.
Also, continue to remember my father, as well.
He is still not back at 100 percent. Also, remember
my Aunt Nina, who underwent surgery in
Gainesville last Monday, Dec. 14.
Happy birthday wishes go out to Joyce Slaven,
who celebrates her birthday Thursday, Dec. 24.
Sharon Smith will celebrate her birthday on Christ-
mas Day. George Rutherford and Terry Studebaker
will celebrate their birthdays on Monday, Dec. 28.

Why is it that when you have to email a
company's customer service staff, that
no matter how much you try to simply
and exactly state what you're com-
plaining about, the reply back always
seems to fixate on the least important
part of your issue, ignoring the central
theme, and giving a totally irrelevant
form letter in response?

I don't think I've been able to resolve
anything meaningful lately in less
than 3 emails from me to clarify the
question and question their answers.
But it's still easier than trying to get
someone on the phone that can under-
stand and speak English...

prediction right now it

I hope to live long

left reverses and decides

I don't understand
why everyone is talking
about a two-state solu-
tion to the Israel-Pales-
tinian dispute. It really
is a three-state solution:
Israel, the Palestinian
Authority and Hamas-
Gaza. Getting this
crowd on the same page
is like herding stray cats
on a flatbed.
We speak a lot about
bias in the mainstream
media, but there are de-
grees of bias. Among


the televised networks,
NBC has taken bias to a
new level. Their cable
affiliate MSNBC is off
the charts.

for this brilliant insight:

Sometimes I just
don't understand the
justice system. New
York Giants wide receiv-

his pants and went to a
local bar. Somehow, he
shot himself in the leg
and now, is going to
prison for two years. I
figured the wound was
punishment enough.
Have you ever
thought about politi-
cians dithering in areas
where they have no ex-
perience? Seems to me
that if they stuck to
things they actually
know, we'd have a lot
fewer and more common
sense laws. For exam-
ple, how many of the so-
called health care
experts in Congress
have one iota of experi-
ence in medical related
fields?
Whatever happened
to bipartisanship? In
the two most important
Congressional votes this
year on Cap and Trade
and Health Care, Democ-
rats have won narrow,
partisan victories. In
fact, the only bipartisan-
ship appears to be in op-
position to Liberals.
The only reason I
look backward is to
learn how to do things
better the next time. It

Why is unemploy-

ging indicator? Because
it is cheaper and less
risky for a businessman
to pay overtime than to
hire new employees as
his business begins to
grow out of recession.
Another solution is to
hire a temporary work-
er. Employment will
only begin to grow grad-
ually when business
feels comfortable with
the recovery.

"My greatest source of pride is my family God
continues to provide my greatest joys and blessings
through them. God provided for our community as
well he used me. How blessed I am that he chose to
use me," she added.
Of course, Archambault will be missed by resi-
dents and colleagues alike.
"Cheryl is so special to our town and her work is
exceptional," Lee Mayor
Ernestine Kinsey noted.
"We will miss her so very
much and can't thank
her enough for her devo-
tion and hard work."

This afternoon, Stobert Lin-
dell Holt, Jr, age 42, was arrested
by law enforcement authorities -
in Orlando, without inci-
dent.Holt was indicted by a state
grand jury on December 16, 2009
on first degree murder, kidnap-
ping, extortion, and for written
threats to kill or do bodily
harm.The charges are related to

ployed as the Lakeland NFS op-
erations manager and resided in
Apollo Beach, Florida, at the
time of Wiles' disappearance.
On April 1, 2008, Robert Wiles reported to
work at his family's Lakeland aircraft mainte-
nance business, NFS.However, he vanished
that day with no explanation.
On April 3, 2008, the Wiles family discov-
ered a ransom demand pertaining to Robert
Wiles' disappearance. Subsequently, a joint

Trader Indicted For

$1.7 Million Fraud
Thomas E Kirwin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of
Florida, announced that David A. Owen, 60, of Destin, Florida, was arraigned
in federal district court today on a ten-count indictment charging him with
three counts of commodities futures trading fraud, three counts of wire fraud,
and four counts of failure to file federal income tax returns, in violation of Ti-
tle 7, United States Code, Sections 6m, 6n, 6o(1) andl3(a), Title 18, United States
Code, Section 1343, and Title 26, United States Code, Section 7203.
The indictment alleges that Owen, operating a commodity pool known as
"Oasis Futures" since January 2005, fraudulently solicited and accepted at least
$2.2 million from the public to invest in commodity futures. In urging his vic-
tims to invest, Owens falsely stated that he was a licensed certified public ac-
count with expertise and a successful track record in futures trading. He backed
these claims up with fraudulent account statements that falsely reflected profits
on trading when, in fact, no profits had been made. Although Owen returned ap-
proximately $562,000 to investors, his conduct resulted in the loss of $1.7 million
overall.
The indictment also alleges that from 2005 through 2008, Owen willfully
failed to file federal income tax returns even though he earned gross incomes of
approximately $125,573 in 2005, $88,757 in 2006, $98,076 in 2007, and $112,673 in
2008.
Owen faces up to five years' imprisonment on each count of commodity fu-
tures fraud, thirty years' imprisonment on each count of wire fraud, and one
year imprisonment for each count of failure to file federal income tax returns.
United States Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Timothy conducted Owen's ini-
tial appearance at 11:00 a.m. today at the federal courthouse in Pensacola, Flori-
da.
Mr. Kirwin commended the work of the Internal Revenue Service Crimi-
nal Investigation Division, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Commodi-
ty Futures Trading Commission, and the State of Florida Bureau of Financial
Investigations whose joint

dents with a variety of
activities, ranging from

the program is not only
providing great ser-
vices, but also is re-
sponding to the
consistent complaint,
"There's nothing for
kids to do in Madison
County!"

transportation home
for students who
choose to stay until the
club closes at 6 p.m.

ent kind of fire-grilling steaks for members of the department, their families
and community friends. The dinner was held Friday, Dec. 18.
Everyone gathers at the Fire Station in downtown Madison each year at
Christmas time to celebrate another year of unity in protecting the lives and
property of the residents in Madison. City Manager Harold Emrich and Mayor
Jim Stanley were among those present to share the evening with Chief Alfred
Martin and the firefighters of Madison.

Put Unused Vacation Days
to Work in Your 401(k)

Now that the year is almost over, you may want to
explore some last-minute steps you can take to poten-
tially boost your financial fortunes and improve your
tax returns for 2010. And one good place to look is
your 401(k).
Your 401(k) is a great retirement savings vehicle. You
typically fund your plan with pretax dollars, so the
more you put in, the lower your taxable income. Plus,
your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis, which
means your money can grow faster than if it were
placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every
year. Also, you can spread your 401 (k) dollars among
a range of investments to match your risk tolerance,
time horizon and retirement goals. Clearly, then, it
would be nice to "max out" on your plan each year. But
during difficult economic times, it may not be easy for
you to defer more of your salary into your 401(k).
Fortunately, there may be a way in which you can
boost your 401(k) contributions without cutting into
your take-home pay.
Specifically, you may be able to convert any unused
vacation and sick time to your 401(k) or other employ-
er-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 457(b) or
403(b). Many employers have offered this conversion
option for years, but relatively few employees have
taken advantage of it. Now, however, the Obama
administration has asked the U.S. Department of the
Treasury and the IRS to issue new rulings on the topic
in the hope of getting more people to increase their
retirement savings. And this is an important goal,
because many of us still need to put away much more
money on a regular basis if we're going to enjoy the
type of retirement lifestyle we've envisioned.
The ability to convert vacation or sick time to your
401(k), 403(b) or 457(b) plan can help you make
progress toward that lifestyle. While the conversion
feature won't enable you to exceed the contribution
limit for your plan -which for 2009 is $16,500, or
$22,000 if you're 50 or older it may make it easier
for you to beef up your contributions for this year, par-
ticularly if you have unused vacation or sick time you
can't carry over.
Not all employers are willing or able to turn vacation or
sick hours into retirement plan contributions, so check
with your human resources or benefits office to see if
you can make this move. If it is allowed, though, con-
sider taking action. Once you know how many retire-
ment plan dollars can result from your unused vaca-
tion or sick days, go over your 401(k) or other plan,
perhaps with the help of your financial advisor, to
determine an appropriate allocation of your money. For
example, you may have accounts within your plan that
are currently under-funded. Or you might benefit from
"rebalancing" your plan by adding some new money
into different accounts. Keep in mind, however, that
diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.
In any case, consider this opportunity to add to your
retirement plan. The more you save today, the brighter
your outlook could be for tomorrow.

Rainy Pay Puts Early Halt To Country Christmas

A soggy day may have put an ear-
ly end to the 24th annual Greenville
Country Christmas but not to any of
the merriment and good spirits of the
crowd-goers on Saturday, Dec. 19.
Greenville Country Christmas
had kicked off on Friday evening,
Dec. 18, with a bake-off contest, a gin-
gerbread house contest and caroling
in the park.
Gingerbread house winners in-
cluded Clay Hall, Katelyn Scarboro
and Kendall Hall.
Farmers & Merchants Bank spon-
sored the Gingerbread House contest.
The bakeoff contest was spon-


scored by Elesta Pritchett and Frances
Norris.

The live nativity scene was rained
out but children from Greenville Ele-
mentary School rang out Christmas
carols as did the Greenville Baptist
Church Choir.
Refreshments were served on Fri-
day evening at the Senior Citizens
Center.
On Saturday, the opening cere-
monies took place.
Frances Ginn was introduced as
Citizen of the Year. Grand Marshal
Gertrude Reddick was also there. The
Girl Scouts led the pledge of alle-


giance and had a contest before the
entertainment began.
The Cavaliers and LifeSong, two
local gospel music groups, performed
for the appreciative crowd.
The cake auction was cancelled
due to rain but five politicians gener-
ously donated $100 each.
Margaret Poppell was the chair-
person for this year's Greenville
Country Christmas. She deserves a
big hand of thanks for all of her hard
work as do all the others who helped
make the 24th Greenville Country
Christmas possible.
Next year, Greenville Country
Christmas will celebrate its silver an-
niversary.
