Control of Wireworms, Sweet Corn Insects, and Celery Insects

Emnett D. Harris, Jr.

The results shown in this report are not intended as insect control
recommendations. One should refer to Florida Agriculture Extension Circular
193B or consult the County Agent, Experiment Station Entomologist, or the
Insecticide Label for insect control recommendations.

WIREWORM CONTROL

Insecticides were applied broadcast on October 25, 1961 and immediately
disked into the soil. Florigold sweet corn was planted on November 8, 1961.
A total of 16 plants per week per treatment and the surrounding soil were
examined for 7 weeks for wireworms.

Experiment II Weed Control and Number of DDT Applications for Corn Stem
Weevil Control.

Florigold 106 sweet corn was planted on August 18 and emerged on August
22, 1961. Insecticide sprays for corn stem weevil control contained 1 gallon
of 25% DDT EC per 100 gallons and were applied at approximately 100 gallons
per acre.

CELERY INSECT CONTROL

Experiment I Non-Systemic Insecticides and Frequency of Application

Utah 52-70 celery transplanted to the field on November 22, 1961.
Sprays applied from December 7 to February 15 at weekly and twice
weekly intervals. Sprays were begun at 75 gallons per acre and
increased to 150 and then to 200 as the celery grew larger.
