Diethylstilbestrol, hydroxyzine implants, tapazole and tr '
fluomeprazine in steer fattening programs

New compounds continue to be produced which appear to have value y
improving the performance of cattle being fattened in feed lot. During tvw
recent experiments at the Everglades Station several of these were investi-
gated. The purpose of the experiments herein reported was to determine the
value of oral and implanted diethylstilbestrol, hydroxyzine implants, tapa-
zole and trifluomeprazine for steers being fattened on pasture and in dry-
lot.
Experiment 819-2
One hundred and twenty two-year old steers were divided into 15 lots
of eight animals each and fed for a 131 day period to study the interrela-
tion of hydrozyzine implants with stilbestrol administered, orally and by
implant, to steers fattened on pasture and in drylot; and to determine the
effect that level of concentrate feed intake had on this interrelationship.
Groups receiving oral stilbestrol were given 10 milligrams daily, in the
concentrate mixture:' those implanted, 24 milligrams a&,''te beginning of the
experiment. One half of the animals in each lot received 60 milligrams
of bydioxyzine, implanted at the beginning of the experiment. Limited fed
animal received 6 pounds of a concentrate feed daily, which was comprised
of'2 parts ground snapped corn, 2 parts citrus pulp and one part cottonseed
meal. 'Tull fed groups received the same feed, except urea replaced the pro-
tein equivalent of 25 percent of the cottonseed meal. Pasture fed groups
grazed R6selawn'St. Augustinegrass. Animals in drylot received Roselawn
St. Augustinegrass silage as their roughage.
Experiment 819-6
One iHubdred and four two-year-old steers were divided into 13 lots of
Cightfanimals eiac and fed for a 112 day period to study the value of tapa-
zdle and'the tranquiliier trifluomeprazine for cattle being fattened on
pasture and in drylot and to see if the effect of these two compounds would
be iltered"by implanted stilbestrol or level of concentrate feed intake.
Tapazole was administered orally during the last 63 days of the experiment
at the'rate of 600 milligrams per animal per day and trifluomeprazine was
administered oially during the entire feeding period at the rate of 5 milli-
grams pdr animal daily. One half of the animals in each lot received 24
milligrams of stilbestrol implanted at the beginning of the experiment. Con-
oeitrate feed was fed the same as in experiment 819-2. Pasture fed groups
grazed Roseldwn St. Augustinegrass. Hegari (regular) sorghum silage was
fed as roughage to the steers fed in drylot.

Summary of Results
1. Didthylstilbestrol either rally (10 mg/animal/day) or im-
planted (24 mg) increased average daily gains of steers
in dryldt.
2. There was no significant difference in average daily gain
attributable to method of administration of stilbestrol.
3. Response to stilbestrol by steers being fattened on pasture
was variable.

5. Implants of the tranquilizer Hydroxyzine (60 mg/animal)
stimulated average daily gains by 13 percent in steers on full
feed and 19 percent for steers receiving a full feed of con-
centrate plus stilbestrol.
6. Hydr6xyzine implants did not stimulate average daily gains
for steers receiving no or limited concentrate feed intake.
7. Response in growth stimulus to the tranquilizer Trifluo-
meprazine (5 mg./animal/day) was variable.
8. Tapazole (600 mg./animal/day, during last 63 days of feed-
ing period) did not increase average daily gains at either
level of concentrate feed intake, on pasture or in drylot.
9. Average net returns, above steer, feed and fertilizer costs,
were greater in most cases on pasture than in drylot.
