Comparison of Air-Blast and Boom Sprayer
on Control of Early Blight in Celery

Materials and Methods:
Plot layout is a 3x3 Latin square design. Each of the 9 plots has an area
80 ft. wide x 100 ft. long or 0.183 acre. Rows are spaced on 28-inch intervals.
Utah 57 celery was transplanted on February 15. Fertilizer was broadcast applied
and disked in 2 weeks prior to transplanting, at rates of 3000#/A of 0-16-8 4
0.3% MnO 4 0.3% B203 4 500# S/A.

Sprays were applied on a 4 to 5 day schedule, commencing February 25

Disease incidence:
Early blight ratings were made on April 1, 15 and 25 using Horsfall and
Barratt's scale as3followb: 1 i .-o disease, 2 = 0-3 of plant with disease
symptoms, 3 = 3-6%, 4 = 6-12%, 5 = 12-25%, 6 = 25-50, 7 = 50-75%, 8 = 75-87%,
9 = 87-94%, 10-= 94-97%, 11 : 97-100%, and 12 s 100%. Disease ratings were made
on alternate rows, except in treatment 2 where some rows were cut out for spray
alleys, and are shown in the following table:
