PERFORMANCE TRIALS WITH SWEET CORN HYBRIDS
V. L. Guzman
Trials were conducted in the fall of 1968 and the spring of 1969. In
each season two trials were carried out one replicated and one observational.
Character of the weather during the trials.-- Experiment 576 was conducted
during the fall of 1968. Mean temperature for September was 79.3F. with
4.9 inches of rainfall; for October 74.5F. with 7.3 inches of rainfall;, and
for November 65.2F. with no rainfall. There were two heavy downpours
which undoubtedly caused damage to the crop, one of 3.9 inches in
September and another of 3.4 inches during October. Leaf-blights were
moderat- severe. Experiment 583 was conducted during the spring from
February to May, 1969. Mean temperatures and rainfall were: for February
60.6F..and 1.59 inches; for March 63.1F. and 6.23 inches; for April 72.2F.
and 9.05 inches. There were two heavy downpours, one in March with
2.79 inches and the other in April with 3.51 inches. Climatic conditions
were favorable for a moderate incidence of leaf-blight.

Exp. 583 E LI BRARY
Location: Sam-Senter Farms, Belle Glade, ', I Ig
Soil type: peaty muck cropped to vegetables fo several years.
.Soil analysis: pH = 6.89; P = 9 pounds/A and KrT-peu L iorida_
Fertilization: 800 pounds/A of 0-8-24 plus minors banded at seeding.
Seeding date: February 12, 1969.
Harvest date: May 12-24, 1969.
Control of insects, diseases, and weeds: routine by the farmer.
Field plot technique: -Harvest plots-3 x 30 feet single row arranged in
complete randomized blocks with four replications.
Results:-- Table I and II present: respectively data on the-replicated
and observational trials of experiment 576 conducted during the fall. In
the replicated trials hybrids Golden Belle (3373), E 7515, Seneca 165
and Cr. 343 produced ears of good appearance and yields similar to the
check variety lobelle. Seneca 165 appeared to be more resistant to
Ilelminthos porium leaf blight among the outstanding hybrids.
In the observational trials, white hybrid from Abbott and Cobb
produced higher yield than Silver Queen but appearance and quality were
slightly inferior to Silver Queen.- Among the yellow hybrids 5100
from Keystone produced high yield-with 90% of fancy ears; however,
appearance of this hybrid was slightly inferior to Florigold 107.
Tables III and IV give the respective data of the replicated'and
observational trials during the spring. In the replicated test lobelle,
Florigold 106A, Wintergreen and XTRA Sweet were'the check hybrids. No
superior hybrid was found in comparison with lobelle and Florigold 106A;
however, hybrid E7515 followed by'ES570 and Golden Belle (3373) appeared
to be promising. Other hybrids that deserve mentioning for producing
high yields.and ears of good appearance iere: Seneca 165, E5575,
Cr. 343, XP 340, and XP 345. Hybrid 3107B was tested for several years
but during this season it developed dryback and tended to produce
excessively long ears. In the observational trials XP 352, XP 353,
XP 355, Seneca 167, E7595, NK51036, were the most promising hybrids in
regard to yields and ear appearance. All the SH shrunkenn) hybrids bred
by E. A. Wolf of this Station showed to be superior in yields, appearance,
and quality to the shrunken check XTRA Sweet.

Days to maturity: Number of days from planting to harvest estimated by
examining 10 ears and determining the day when the majority will reach
optimum market maturity.
Husk over ear tip: Approximate length of the husk over the tip of the ear.
A 1 indicates that the husk is shorter than one inch. A 2 indicates that
the husk is about 1 inch and a 3 that the husk is longer than one inch.
Flag length: Estimated as mean flag length of 10 ears: 1 = shorter than
6 inches, 2 = about six inches and 3 = longer than 6 inches.
Ear length (inches): Mean ear length of 10'randomly selected marketable
husked ears per variety and replication.
Ear diameter (Centimeters): Mean ear diameter of 10 husked Par,. tmensured
about 5 cem. from the ear tyt.t porx vaority nnda .oplication.
Unfilled ear tip (inches): Mean length of unfilled tip of 10 randomly
selected marketable ears per plot.
Number of rows (majority): Number of kernel'rdwS of 10 randomly selected
ears reported as a majority number.
Number of plants harvested: Number of plants producing ears in a 30 foot row.
Plant stand: Number of plants in a 30 foot row.
Marketable number of ears per plant: Total number of U.S. Fancy and U.S
No. 1 ears:
Number of plants harvested.
Percentage U.S. Fancy ears: Number of U.S. Fancy ears in 10 ear samples
taken at random.from the marketable ear class per variety and replication,
reported as percent.
Crates per acre: Estimated from the number of, U..S.. Fancy and U.S. Noi 1
ears (5 doz/crate).
Tons per acre: Estimated from the total weight of U.S. Fancy and U.S. No. 1
ears.
Taste: One person's opinion on eatability of the ears judged from the taste
of raw fresh kernels: 1 = poor to 5 = very good.
Appearance: One person's opinion on husked appearance of the ears: 1 = poor,
to 5 = excellent.
Blight index: Helminthosporium turcicum leaf blight rating on unsprayed
plants. Zero = no blight, 5 = severe blight (by E. A. Wolf).
