The cost of cabbage production in South Florida is considerably
increased because of hand weeding needed especially in early fall and late
winter plantings. Work conducted in the past has shown that cabbage, is
quite tolerant to Oktone when applied as a pre-emergence treatment-/. How-
ever, Oktone was not effective in controlling grasses and, furthermore, the
manufacture of this herbicide has been discontinued, In screening tests
CDEC(2-chloroallyldiethyldithicarbaaate), among others, has been found to
be very effective in controlling grasses and other weeds and in addition it
has appeared safe for use on most of the cruciferus crops. Thus, it seemed
desirable to further test the effect on stand and yields of cabbage and
control of weeds with CDEC,


Materials and Methods

Copenhagen Market variety of cabbage was planted 0.5 inch deep in peaty
muck soil of pH 5.6. One day after seeding, four and/or eight pounds per
acre of CDEC were applied as pre-emergence treatments. In the post-emergence
experiment four pounds per acre of CDEC were used one day after emergence of
the cabbage. In both experiments the surface of the soil was moist, espec-
ially in the post-emergence test, which had received a heavy rain the
previous day.

One row plots 30 feet long were employed. In one of the pre-emergence
tests, treatments with four and eight pounds of CDEC were part of a fac--
torial experiment reported elsewhere/ which was replicated three times.
The other tests had six replications. Rates are expressed in pounds of
active ingredient in 30 gallons of water per acre.
