PERFORMANCE TRIALS WITH SWEET CORN HYBRIDS

Two trials are reported, one conducted during the fall of 1969
and the other during the early spring of 1970.

Character of the weather during the trials.-- Experiment 587 was
conducted during the fall. Mean temperature for September was 79.5 F.
with 9.17 inches of rainfall; for October 76.9 F. with 5.93 inches
of rainfall; and for November 65.2 F. and 2.47 inches of rainfall.
During September and October it rained practically every day which
resulted in poor disease and insect control; however, climatic
conditions improved during November and plants produced a fair
yield. Experiment 599 was conducted during late winter and early
spring of 1970. Mean temperatures and rainfall were: for
February 60.30F. and 2.35 inches rainfall- for March 66.7 F. and
15.01 inches rainfall; and for April 73.8 F. and 0.11 inches of
rainfall. There were two heavy downpours, on March 8 with 3.19
inches and March 25-26 with 7.45 inches. These heavy rains probably
reduced yields. Climatic conditions improved during April and
leaf blight was moderate.

Fertilization: 1000 lbs/A of 0-8-24 with all minors banded at
seeding.

Seeding date: September 12, 1969.

Cultural: One plant per hill 8-10 inches apart in 3 feet rows.

Control of diseases, insects and weeds: by the farmer cooperator.

Harvest date: November 29 to December 3, 1969.

Field plot technique: Plots were 40 x 3 feet, at harvest 30 x 3
feet, single row arranged in complete randomized blocks with four
replications.

Experiment 599

Location: Sam Senter Farm, Belle Glade, Florida.

Soil type: Peaty muck cropped to sugar cane for the last five
years.

Soil analysis: pH = 6.42; P = 7 Ibs/A and K = 107 lbs/A.
Fertilization; 600 Ibs/A 0-12-20 with all minors banded at seeding.

Seeding date: February 12, 1970.

Cultural: Thinned to one plant 8-10 inches apart in 3 feet rows.

Control of diseases, insects and weeds: by the farmer cooperator.

Harvest date: May 10 15, .1970.

Field plot technique: Plot was 40 x 3 feet, at harvest 30 x 3
feet, single row arranged in complete randomized blocks with four
replications.

Results

Table 1 presents the data on the replicated trial of
experiment 587 conducted during the fall of 1969. Hybrid Golden
Belle ( 3373 ) produced significantly higher yield than lobelle,
the check. Appearance of the ears was good. Leaf blight sus-
ceptibility of Golden Belle was slightly less than lobelle but
the plants were taller and tended to lodge slightly during heavy
rains. This may interfere with mechanical harvest of Golden Belle;
however, if hand pulling of the ears is planned, no difficulty should
be anticipated. Due to the adaptability of Golden Belle for fall
production, it is suggested that it be tried on a commercial
scale in comparison:.with the standard varieties. Promising hybrids
for yields similar to the checks and good appearance of the ears
were: E5575C, Cr.343, followed by XP337, and 5100. .Hybrids E7515,
Seneca 165, XP340, and XP345 produced high yields but the'appear-
ance of their ears was inferior to their respective checks.

Tables 2 and 3 give-the results of the replicated and
observational trials, respectively, conducted during late winter
and early spring of 1970. In the replicated trials seed germination
of hybrids NK51036, NCX224, Seneca 166 and 5100 was poor because
seed of the past season's crop was used. Yields were not obtained;
however, enough plants were harvested to have some ear character-
istics determined. The check varieties were Florida 104 or
lobelle,,Florigpld 106A;and.Wintergreen. A highly significant
yield increase was obtained with E5575C, but only 80% of the ears
were fancy.' '"ybrid-E7515 produced yields similar to.the check
(106A) of 90% fancy ears, but the ears tended to be shorter than
those of the check. Staysweet and Staysweet. resistant produced
ears of goo4 appearance and their'yields were not significantly
different from those 6o lobelle.

In the observational trials, yields of the new hybrids were
below those of Florigold 107 ( check ), but similar'or better to
lobelle. Outstanding for yield, good appearance and high percent
of fancy ears were:' E9525, Cr 886-13, XP359, E9535, E9530, E9520,
and finally E7595, although this latter hybrid had ears of fair
appearance only.

Table 4 presents additional data on some plant characteristics.

Days to maturity: Number of days from planting to harvest
estimated by examining 10 ears and determining the ,day when the
majority will reach optimum market maturity.

Husk over ear tip: Approximate length of the husk over the tip
of the ear. A 1 indicates that the husk is shorter than one
inch.. A 2 indicates that the husk is about 1 inch and a 3 that
the husk is longer than one inch.

Flag length: Estimated as mean flag length of 10 ears: 1 =
shorter than 6 inches, 2 = about six inches and 3 = longer than
6 inches.

Ear length (inches): Mean ear length of 10 randomly selected
marketable husked ears per variety and replication.

Ear diameter (Centimeters): Hean ear diameter of 10 husked
ears. Measured about 5 cem. from the ear butt per variety and
replication.

Unfilled ear tip (inches); Mean length of unfilled tip of 10
randomly selected marketable ears per plot.

Number of rows (majority): Number of kernel rows of 10 randomly
selected ears te&prted as*-a majority number.

Number of plants harvested: Number of plants producing ears
in a 30 foot row.

Plant stand: Number of plants in a 30 foot row.

Marketable number of ears per plant:Total number of U. S. Fancy and
No. 1 ears:
Number of plants harvested.

Percentage U.S. Fancy ears: Number of U.S. Fancy ears in 10 ear
samples taken at random from the marketable ear class per variety
and replication, reported as percent.










Crates per acre: Estimated from the number of U.S. Fancy and
U.S. No. 1 ears (5 doz/crate).

Tons per acre: Estimated from the total weight of U.S. Fancy
and U.S. No. 1 ears.

Taste: One person's opinion on eatability of the ears judged
from the taste of raw fresh kernals: 1 = poor to 5 = very good.

Appearance: One person's opinion on husked appearance of the ears:
1 = poor to 5 = excellent.

Blight index: Helminthosporium turcicum leaf blight rating on
unsprayed plants. Zero = no blight, 5 = severe blight (by E. A. Wolf).

Plant and sucker height: Mean of 10, measured in inches from
ground to tip of tassel,

Ear Height: Mean of 10,measured in inches from ground to node of
most mature ear (upper ear).

Ear shank length: Rated as short=S, medium=M, and large=L.
( Medium as the ear shank of lobelle.)
