Performance of Cattle of British and Brahman Breeding When Fattened
in Drylot and on Pasture 1/

H. L. Chapman, Jr., A. Z. Palmer, J. R. Crockett and J. W. Carpenter 2/ _/

The data presented in this paper are results from the first two of four
experiments conducted at the Everglades Experiment Station to evaluate the
relative merits of fattening cattle on good, well managed pasture and in
drylot. During these first two studies steers of different breed composi-
tion were used, in order to determine if various breeds performed similarly
on the different feeding regimes.

Experimental Procedures

The first experiment (819-1) had the following design:

Number of animals
Breed of steer Pasture Drylot Source

Hereford 24 24 Purchased
Brahman 8 8 U.S. Sugar Corp., Clewiston
Hereford x Brahman 8 8 Cross-7 Ranch, Ft. Pierce
Angus x Brahman 8 8 Wm. T. Stitt, Clewiston
Charbray 8 8 K-Bar Ranch, Zephyrhills
Santa Gertrudis 8 8 Montgomery Ranch, Arcadia
TOTAL 6V

The second experiment (819-2) had the following experimental design:
