1969 FORAGE (SILAGE) SORGHUM PERFORMANCE TRIALS IN FLORIDA

Forage (silage) sorghum trials were conducted in 1969 at
Experiment Station Units near Jay, Marianna, Quincy, Gainesville,
Sanford, Zellwood, and Belle Glade, Florida. Trials were conducted
on mineral soils except at Zellwood and Belle Glade where trials
were on muck soils. This report summarized the results of these
trials for the 1969 season.
The fertilization rates and soils at the various locations
are recorded in Table.l. Seeding dates are given in Table 2.
The rate of seeding the varieties in all trials, except Gainesville,
was 10 pounds per acre. At Gainesville 12 live seed were planted
per foot of row. The Florida 200 corn population varied from
13,000 to 15,000 plants per acre.
* Manuscript editor
Varieties were arranged in a randomized block design repli-
cated 6 times. Three or four-row plots, with all measurements
made on the center row or rows, were used at all locations except
Sanford and Zellwood. At these locations two-row plots were used
and measurements were made on both rows. Plots were 15 to 17
feet in length. Distance between rows was either 36 or 38 inches.
Insecticides and herbicides were applied as needed to control
insect and weed pests; the principal weed control at most loca-
tions was from cultivation.
1969 Forage and Head Yields. The total freshweight
(greenweight) forage yields of the 6 Florida forage sorghum
trials in 1969 season are reported in Table 3. Head and Forage
yields for Belle Glade are reported in Table 7 as these data
were not available when Tables 2 and 3 were processed.
The dry matter yields of heads and total forage of varieties
in the trials at Jay and Gainesville for two harvests in 1969
are given in Tables 4 and 5, respectively. A summary of the 1969
dry matter yields of forage sorghum trials at Jay and Gainesville
is shown in Table 6. The dry matter yields of heads and total
forage for 1968 and 1969 at Belle Glade and for 1969 at Quincy
are given in Tables 7 and 8, respectively.
Green matter yields of heads and forage for trials at
Marianna, and Sanford and Zellwood are given in Tables 9 and 10,
respectively. Dry matter yields of forage sorghum trials for 1967,
1968 and 1969 seasons at Jay and Gainesville are presented in
Tables 11 and 12, respectively.
Days to Heading, Lodging and Disease Ratings. The days to
heading and disease and lodging ratings for both harvests at Jay and
Gainesville are listed in Tables 13 and 14, respectively. Similar
ratings for Belle Glade and Quincy are presented in Tables 7 and 8,
respectively.
Yield Performance in 1965-1969 Trials. Table 15 shows in how
many trials a variety was tested during the period 1965 through 1969,
and in how many of these trials the total forage yield was above
trial average and one of the top five highest yielding varieties, in
a trial. Three periods of time are reported, the 1965 through 1968
growing seasons, the 1969 growing season, and the 1965 through 1969
growing seasons.
Table 16 gives similar information to Table 15 for head yields
for trials where head yields were measured. In Tables 15 and 16 a
trial consists of 11 or more varieties being tested at the same loca-
tion under similar conditions. The 1969 data for Belle Glade are not
included in Tables 15 and 16. The dry matter yield of total forage
and heads was used in ranking varieties except where only green weight
yield was measured. Widely adapted and superior yielding varieties
should yield above trial average in a high percentage of trials in
which they are tested. As varieties with the highest head (grain)
yield are not usually the varieties with highest total forage yield,
one should decide whether total forage yield or head (grain yield is
most important and use the appropriate table in selecting superior
yielding varieties.
Note! This will be the only detailed report of the 1969 Forage Sorghum
Trials. Save this report if you will need it in the future as supplies
are limited.
