1977 variety Tests with Sorghums for Grain, Silage, and Other Uses and Millets
Tests were grown at Jay, Marianna, Live Oak, Gainesville, Ona, and Belle
Glade in 1977, the dryest year since these tests were initiated. Observational
tests were grown at Homestead and ratoon crops were grown at several locations
with varying degrees of success. Irrigation water was available and was used at
most locations, without which the tests in 1977 would have been complete failures.
Of the 94 sorghum and pearlmillet hybrids, only one, GAHI-3, was the prod-
uct of state and federal experiment station, except for possibly originating in-
breds that the proprietary sources might have used in formulating hybrids 'that
were tested in 1977. D.G. Hanway, Agronomist at the University of Nebraska, in
a manuscript on a source of variety survey reported to cooperating agronomy de-
partment heads on 7 December 1977 that in 26 states reporting private companies
bred 82% and agricultural experiment stations bred only 18% of the sorghum hyb-
rids in use in those states. This represents literally millions of dollars of
research and development being supplied by the private sector, thereby saving
that number of taxpayer dollars that would otherwise have had to been appropri-
ated by state legislatures or supplied by the USDA from federal funds. Neverthe-
less, 1978 is the last year the proprietary hybrids will be tested in Florida
without grants in aid from the private sources.
The International Sorghum Anthracnose Virulence Nursery (ISAVN) was grown
at Gainesville in cooperation with Dr. Natale Zummo, Research Plant Pathologist,
Sugar Crops Field Station, ARS-USDA, Route 10, Box 152, Meridian, MS 39301. An
attempt is being made to ascertain whether there are definite races of anthrac-
nose on southern US sorghum. Late arrival of seed necessitated planting on May
25, 1977. The fungus genus Colletotricum is the cause of sorghum anthracnose
as well as red rot of sugarcane. Dr. Zummo rated the 13 lines in September
when the lines were near maturity, having grown under very drought conditions.
Detailed results of the 1976 sorghum and millet data were made available
in Agronomy Research Report AG 77-5, Agronomy Department, IFAS, University of
Florida, Gainesville, February 1977, as well as the following articles in the
Sorghum Newsletter, a publication of the Sorghum Improvement Conference of

1977 sorghum, sudangrass, sorgo, and pearlmillet testing in Florida, continued
Sweet sorghum (sorgo) tests were conducted at Quincy by the USDA and at
the ARC-Ona by state personnel. These hybrids were grown primarily for use
in making sorghum syrup. Tests scheduled for Belle Glade on those hybrids
for use in making sugar did not materialize, but will be conducted in 1978.
Details of the tests are shown in research reports prepared for farmers
in the Quincy, Jay, and Ona/Immokalee areas as follows:
Anonymous. Sweet sorghum sirup variety test, (North Florida) Research and
Extension Center (sic) Quincy, Florida 1977. Undated, 3 pp.

Both personnel and policy changes will be made in the Florida Statewide
Sorghum Testing Program beginning with the 1978 planting season. Dr. V.E.
Green, Jr. was coordinator of the tests from 1971-1977. Since he is going
on sabbatical leave in 1978 to study the USA sunflower industry prior to
devoting fulltime to research on that 6ilcrop, he will be replaced by a
new coordinator: Dr. David L. Wright, IFAS-AREC, P.O. Box 470, Quincy, FL
32351. His office telephone number is: AC 904, 627-9236. Dr. Wright will
inherit the 1978 seed stocks, accession sheets and record books, as well as
the voluminous correspondence generated since 1971 with the cooperating seed
companies. Dr. Green will continue to be active in sorghum only through'the
publication of the 1977 data in this Agronomy Research Report. 1978 seed will
distributed by Dr. Wright. If seed companies have already shipped seed to
Dr. Green, these will be forwarded to Dr. Wright as soon as practical.
Policy changes for 1979 might include charging a reasonable fee to
the seed companies for testing their hybrids. This fee will probable not exceed
25-50 dollars per hybrid In the statewide tests. It is regrettable that appro-
priations from state sources are not sufficient to cover this very important
phase of the agronomic research program in Florida.

Characteristics of this clipping: Same heights for both species. Pearlmillets were
double the fresh weight yields of sorghums. Millets outyielded sorghums in dry weight
by 62 percent. Yields as harvested fresh of the millets were only 18.0% dry matter;
Sorghums were 22.7% dry matter. Pearlmillets had many more tillers and were leafier.

Characteristics of this clipping: Same heights for both species. Fresh weight yields
of the millets were 1.4 times greater than those of the S x SG, as were the dry weight
yields, with only NK Trudan 5, a true SG hybrid, approaching the millet yields. Dry
weight percentages of the two species were nearly identical on the average, exactly
one-quarter of the fresh weight being dry matter. Millets were leafier and contained
more tillers per stool than did the S x SG hybrids. All plots were well headed on the
harvest date. This was also true of the second cutting harvested after only 26 days.
