only other member of the family which produces feathers of a
marketable value is the rhea.
The age to which the ostrich attains is largely a matter of
conjecture. One writer asserts that the bird may reach the
advanced age of a hundred years, but this statement, like the
estimates of profits, is uncertain.
Every bird has twenty-four white plumes on each wing, with
a row of protectors, or floss feathers, underneath. Above these
is a row of feathers, and still another row shorter in length, and
black in the adult male, but drab in the female.
To thousands of tourists who have visited Florida in the past
five years, there is no more interesting and remarkable place to
spend a few hours than the Florida Ostrich Farm, located "on
the banks of the beautiful St. Johns river, in pretty suburban
Jacksonville, the greatest attraction of that constantly growing
"Gateway to Florida." It can be reached by the electric cars
plainly marked, or by the beautiful Boulevard-a paved road
which belts the city. The Farm lies about twenty minutes ride
or drive from the center of the city.
From an educational point of view, there is nothing of the
kind in this country that is equal to the sights one sees at this
farm, where in a country to which these large birds are entire
strangers, the breeding, raising and growing of African ostriches
has been successfully accomplished in a few years' time on a
large scale and with a percentage of loss unusually small when
one considers the great difference between the climatic and gen-
eral conditions of the land of their nativity and those of the
United States of America. The great value or income from
ostrich raising is in the growth and development of the plumage
or feathers, which, as we all know, are the most beautiful and
attractive for commercial and decorative purposes of any, being
of a quality and texture that adapts them and places them, it. the
head of all feathers for personal and millinery decorative pur-
*poses. Beginning in 1885, when a shipment of thirty-nine-oktrihes
reached this country from Africa, and'for a few years thereafter,

while these birds were taken to different parts of the West, ostrich
farming was in an embryonic state. In the fall and winter of
1898-99 the present farm at Jacksonville was permanently located
and has since then been a most decided success, and at the same
time created a point of interest for all those visiting Florida.
To the average American accustomed to see only those few

nearly 200 magnificent ostriches that weigh from 250 to 400
pounds each, standing from seven to ten feet high.
Given the best possible attention, carefully fed, their smallest
needs constantly studied and daily supplied, it has resulted in
their being perfect specimens of their race-"the largest living
bird in existence today."
The life, habits and characteristics of ostriches are really
peculiarly interesting. Starting with the mating of the grown
birds, we first must allow the male and female to select their
own mate; and by careful observation and study we discover

that a certain pair of birds have decided to "pair off" from the
balance and breed. We immediately place this pair in a separate
pen or .corral where they have all the room necessary for their
proper care. After breeding. the male bird prepares the nest for
his mate, a hollow in the sand,,generally in a secluded spot in
his pen. about four feet, in cwneter and twelve inches deep,

preparing same by sitting on the ground, resting his weight on
his breast bone and scratching out sufficient sand by a backward
movement of his legs and toes. until he has made it of sufficient
size and depth.
In this hollow the hen ostrich lays or deposits her eggs, one
every other day until she has laid from fifteen to eighteen eggs.
The eggs are from fifteen to eighteen inches in circumference and
weigh about three and a half to four pounds each, the shell being
from one-sixteenth to one-eighth of an inch thick and withstand-
ing a decided blow. After laying her nest of eggs, the bird
begin "setting," the hen during the day and the male 'ostrich
covering the eggs at night time, and they remain on the nests
constantly for from forty-two to forty-five days-never leaving
it, except for food twice a day. Even then the male bird covers
the nest frequently while his mate seeks her food.
The "chick" when ready to hatch, will usually break or "pip"
the shell itself, but at times the hen ostrich will assist by break-
ing the thick shell with her breast bone, by pressing upon'it, and
helping the "chick" out by lifting it out with her beak and shaking
the shell from its body.
The first growth of ostrich chicks is remarkably fast, as from
ten days of age up to six months old they grow at the rate of
one foot a month. After six months they grow much more
slowly.
Both sexes are similar in color and appearance and are almost
indistinguishable until about fifteen or eighteen months old, when
the feathers on the male bird-which have been- mixture of
drab, white and brown-begin to darken and finally at about four
years old become a decided black, while the female's feathers
remain drab during her entire life. Baby ostriches do not eat
for three days after hatching. The third day they begin to stand
up and "toddle" like a child, and after being taught to eat by
having bits of their food placed in their beaks, very quickly dis-
cover the use of their beaks and pick up their own food.
The chicks must be most carefully fed and have to have-spe-

cially prepared food, plenty of fine grit and fresh, clean water.
They are carefully housed and guarded day and night against any
dampness or chilling winds, which are liable to cause sickness and
carry them off in a few hours time. Their first crop of growth of
feathers matures at from eight to nine months after birth and are
then "plucked," not pulled, out, as that would cause great pain to

the birds, as well as serious injury to the sockets in which each
feather grows and from which it directly receives its life and
nourishment for its growth to maturity.
By the use of sharp clippers we cut the quill of the ripe feather
about an inch or two from the bird's body, thus preserving the
beauty of the feather fibre and also causing the bird no. pain. In
two month's time, in the ordinary course of nature, the stub of the
quill left in the socket dries and naturally falls out and a new
feather at once begins to grow in, and in six months' time another
feather has matured and we again clip, or, as we call it, pluck it.
This applies to each of the feathers that grow on an ostrich which
we can use. The male ostrich has the finest quality and longest
length of feathers. Being either a jet black or clear white its

feathers are most valuable, while the twenty-four white feathers
that grow on each wing of each male bird are of a length, breadth
and quality that make them much sought after. The young
ostrich grows more slowly from six months to eighteen months
and does not fully mature until about three years old if the female
and four years if the male bird. They are kept in pens and cor-
rals separate from the older birds, as the fighting qualities of the
male bird, and particularly his viciousness during the breeding
season, make it necessary to keep the older birds separate, so
they cannot kick and possibly seriously injure the younger ones.
During the laying and incubating season the males become
very fierce, and have often been known to dangerously wound a
man with a blow of the foot. They kick forward with the
strength of a horse, and with a downward scratching movement.
A certain amount of safety in case of an attack by one of these
huge birds can be secured by lying flat on the ground, as they can
kick dangerously only at a height of about three feet and over

.dog; theywill not hesitate to charge a man on horseback, but the
appearance of a little fox terrier will 'send them running to the
farthest corner.of the field.
The feathers are taken from these birds every eight months;
and are then senil to our factory in New York, where they are
prepared and made up into beautiful boas, plumes, tips, pompons,
etc., which we offer for sale at producer's prices as described in
the following pages.
It is impossible to describe ostrich feathers accurately by
means of a price-list or catalogue; in fact, figures convey very
little idea of their different values, some very short feathers being
.worth more than longer ones. their values being determined by
their width and quality.
All of our finest goods are made from the feathers of the
male ostrich, whose plumage has more natural luster and is of
richer quality than that of the female, and consequently, of a
higher commercial value.

Ostrich Boas
THE ostrich boa is a staple article of dress that cannot be
counterfeited or imitated. Its only competitor is the fur
boa, whose only recommendation is its warmth. The
ostrich boa is peculiar. It is both warm and cool. Our ostrich
feather boa is light and when thrown back a little from the neck
does not feel uncomfortably warm, yet gives a slight protection
to the shoulders. When drawn up close to the neck it is as warm
as fur and is much cleaner and has no odor. The ostrich feather
hoa is an indispensable article of dress, not only for its great
utility, but for its extreme beauty and fashionableness. Our boas
are not to be compared with those commonly found in department
and dry goods stores. They are made for hard use as well as
beauty. We sell thousands of them to people who write us most
