The 1981 field corn variety test was planted in a commercial
field of corn on Pioneer Farm No. 2 (Hundley Farms) 13 miles east
of Belle Glade, Florida. The soil was a Terra Ceia muck with the
following soil test values at planting time: pH-6.0, P-23, and
K-231 (Belle Glade-A.R.E.C. soil test procedures). The fertility
level was higher than that currently recommended for field corn.
No fertilizer was applied to the corn. Several crops of radishes
had been grown on this particular field prior to the corn crop.
The variety test was planted on March 10, 1981. The experimental
design was a randomized complete block with four replications of 30
different varieties. Plots consisted of three 36-inch wide rows,
S 22 feet long, with data taken from one row. Plots were laid out in
such a manner that only 20 feet of row:was planted leaving a 2 foot
space between the ends of plots. In this report the entire 22 feet
was used as a basis for calculating yields.' In previous reports 21
feet was used as the basis for calculating yields, which would give
slightly higher yields. The above statement is given to explain
+ the discrepancy between the report presented at the field day and
this report. Ranking of varieties remains the same.
Pesticides used for weed and insect control were as follows:

The field was cultivated twice for weed control.
The corn was harvested on July 13 and 14. Grain yields in
bushels per acre, corrected to 15.5 percent moisture, are presented
in Table 1. Yields ranged from 145 to 202 bushels per acre. Data
for several other traits that may be of interest in selecting a
corn hybrid are also presented in Table 1. Lodging and barrenness
were measured, but since neither were significant, results are not
reported.
The commercial field in which the variety test was located
was planted at 24,000 plants per acre with a final stand of 23,500
plants. It was estimated to have yielded 190 bushels per acre.
Two adjacent fields averaged approximately 171 bushels per acre.
It is felt that the unusually high yields for the varieties in this trial
as well as the commercial field were due in part to the 1) high soil fertility
levels, 2) increase in solar radiation, and 3) decrease in rainfall which
resulted in less lodging and stalk rot and a greater release of soil nitrogen.
