BELL PEPPER VARIETY TRIAL FOR SPRING 1990
T. K. Howe and W. E. Waters1
A replicated variety trial was conducted on sweet bell pepper at the Gulf
Coast Research and Education Center, Bradenton, FL in the spring of 1990.
Forty-six entries were included in this trial.
Materials and Methods
Beds 32 inches wide and 9 inches high on 5 ft centers were formed in early
February 1990. Two bands of 18-0-25-2 were placed in a shallow groove 12
inches to each side of the bed center at 1568 Ib/A. (Acre = 8712 linear
feet of bed). Superphosphate (0-20-0 plus minor elements as F503 oxide
at 80 Ib/ton) was incorporated across the width of the beds 4 inches deep
at 348 Ib/A. The beds were fumigated with methylbromide:chloropicrin
(67:33) at 214 Ib/mulched A (8712 x 2.7 ft) and covered with black
polyethylene mulch. Land was seepage irrigated from ditches spaced every
six beds.
Seed of all pepper entries (Table 2) were sown on January 4, 1990 into
plastic trays containing coarse vermiculite. Seedlings were transplanted
18 days later to containerized plant flats (1.5 x 1.5 x 2.5 inches)
containing peat and vermiculite (1:1, v:v) amended with dolomite (11.3
lb), superphosphate (5.6 lb) and hydrated lime (2.8 lb), each per cu. yd.
of media.
Transplants were set into the field on February 21, 1990 in two rows
spaced 10 inches apart with an in-row plant spacing of 12 inches. At
transplanting, plants were watered with 20-20-20 fertilizer at 5 Ib/100
gal water. There were four replications of 16 plants per plot arranged
in a randomized complete block design. Plants were staked and tied in
mid-April to prevent lodging.
Integrated pest management was used for insect population control
throughout the season. Predominant insect pests during the season were
beet armyworm, sweetpotato whitefly, aphid, and thrips. Appropriately
timed applications of labelled pesticides were utilized for these pests.
A preventative spray program utilizing maneb with or without copper was
followed for control of fungal and bacterial pathogens. Paraquat was
applied post transplant to the row middles for weed control.
'Research Program Coordinator and Center Director, respectively.
Fruit were picked on May 9, 16, 24, and 31 as green fruit. Pepper fruit
were graded as cull or marketable based on U.S. standards for grades.
Marketable fruit were firm, free from damage or disease, well shaped, and
typical for the cultivar. Generally, plant diseases were not a problem,
however, symptoms typical of viral infection were evident in foliage and
fruit in some entries, but identification was inconclusive. Aphids and
sweetpotato whiteflies were both present in the field, therefore vectors
of various viral diseases were available. To estimate virus-like damage,
cull fruit with brown streaks or puckering were separated from other cull
fruit. Beet armyworm was the most destructive insect pest. Worm-damaged
cull fruit were tabulated separately to quantify the extent of yield
damage. Total fruit harvested and cull fruit were counted and weighed.
A sample of eight marketable fruit per plot was selected at random from
the first harvest. These fruit were measured for length, diameter, wall
thickness, and the number of lobes were counted. Yields were computed on
a weight basis and were expressed as 28 Ib cartons. Qualitative
evaluations of horticultural characteristics were made of all entries
prior to harvest.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
General weather information is presented in Table 1. During the spring
1990 production season, temperatures were warmer from February through May
as compared to the 35-year averages. Rainfall was less for the season
compared to the 35-year averages with the exception of February.
Characteristics of plants and fruit with general ratings of all cultivars
and advanced breeding lines are given in Table 2. These qualitative
evaluations were made on a single replication for each entry before
harvest began.
Seasonal yields (Table 3) ranged form 317 cartons/A for SPP 9102 to 1715
cartons /A for 'Zerto'. Fifteen entries were not significantly different
than 'Zerto' in marketable yield, all of which exceeded 1165 cartons/A.
The number of marketable fruit per plant was greater than 8 for 'Crispy'
(8.3) and 'Zerto', (8.7) and exceeded 7 for 'Whopper Improved'. Average
fruit weight ranged from 3.8 oz for SPP 9201 to 7.3 oz for PSX 8287.
Nineteen entries were not significantly different than PSX 8287 in fruit
weight. Plant stand was significantly less than 100% for 'Camelot',
'Orobelle', P 8048, Sunex 4503, and PR 89-10.
The proportion of total culls ranged from a low of 25.3% for 'Zerto' to
79.0% for SPP 9102. Twenty four entries were similar to 'Zerto' in low
cull production. Those entries highest in culls were most affected by
beet armyworm damage and/or virus-like symptoms. Four entries had great
losses due to virus-like damage: SPP 9102 with 73.8% of total culls
attributed to viral symptoms, Sunex 4507 with 60.0%, Sunex 4503 with
53.1%, and SPP 4507 with 47.1%. It was unclear whether these lines were
more susceptible and became infected on site, or if seed were
contaminated. Beet armyworm damage, as a proportion of total cull
production, ranged from 3.6% for Sunex 4507 to 42.4% for 'Gator Belle'.
Damage exceeded 25% for 15 entries.
Marketable fruit dimensions were measured for the earliest fruit and are
given in Table 4. Average fruit length ranged from 3.3 inches for
'Amigo', 'Mello', 'Bellguard', and 'Verdel' to 4.8 inches for 'Vidi' and
'Clovis'. Average fruit width ranged from 2.8 inches for SPP 920 to 4.0
inches for 'Amigo' and PSX 8287. Fruit blockiness is revealed by the
ratio of length to width. Thirty-six entries fall between 0.9 and 1.1 in
the ratio of length to width and would be considered blocky or square.
Long-fruited entries included SPP 9201, 'Zerto', 'Clovis', 'Predi',
'Vidi', and HMX 7653 all with a ratio 1.4 or above. Wall thickness ranged
from 4.6 mm for SPP 9201 to 6.3 mm for 'Whopper Improved'. Fifteen
entries were similar to 'Whopper Improved' in wall thickness. Average
lobe number ranged from 3.2 for SPP 9201 to 4.1 for 'Bellguard'. Twenty-
five entries were equal to or greater than an average of 3.8 lobes per
fruit.
Earliness as judged by the greatest marketable yield at the first harvest
(Table 5) was evident for PSX 8287, PSX 10088, 'Predi', 'Clovis', 'Vidi',
'Whopper Improved', PSR 36886, 'Camelot', 'Mello', 'Ssupersweet 860', and
PR 89-9, which all exceeded 160 cartons/A. The average number of fruit
per plant ranged from less than 0.1 to 0.9. Average fruit weight ranged
from 5.9 oz for HMX 6664 to 11.6 oz for Sunex 4507. Sunex 4507 had a very
high average fruit weight, but produced only 0.1 fruit per plant at first
harvest. The average fruit weight for the vast majority of the entries
ranged from 7.0 oz to 8.0 oz. Beet armyworm damage had the greatest
effect on cull production at the first harvest. Virus-like symptoms
accounted for few of the culls produced at the initial harvest, with some
exceptions such as SPP 9102 and Sunex 4507.
At the second harvest on May 16, (Table 6), marketable yields ranged from
67 cartons/A for SPP 9102 to 575 cartons/A for 'Zerto'. Fruit number
harvested per plant ranged from 0.3 for SPP 9102 to 2.5 for 'Zerto'.
Thirty-three entries produced marketable yields similar to 'Zerto' at this
time. Average fruit weight of 6.4 oz or greater was not significantly
different than the fruit weight of PSR 36886 at 7.7 oz. As for the first
harvest, beet armyworm damage accounted for much of the total cull
production.
At the third harvest only 'Zerto', 'Ranger', and 'Whopper Improved' were
not significantly different than 'Crispy' in highest yield (Table 7).
Marketable yields ranged from 172 cartons/A for Sunex 4507 to 1126
cartons/A for 'Crispy'. Average fruit weight ranged from 3.4 oz to 9.4
oz, whereas the majority of the entries were from between 5.0 and 6.0 oz
in weight. Many of the fruit at this harvest were turning from green to
red or yellow indicating that the smaller fruit size was not related to
immaturity. The proportion of culls ranged from 28.4% for P1288 to 79.1%
for SPP 9102. Virus-like symptoms appeared on more fruit and worm damage
accounted for less damage than previous harvests.
The fourth harvest on May 31 (Table 8) served to identify later maturing
entries. All entries which yielded more than 107 crates/A were not
significantly different than 'Gator Belle' at the top of the range with
213 crates/A. Only 8 entries produced 1.0 marketable fruit per plant or
more at this harvest. Average fruit weight ranged from 2.9 oz for Sunex
4507 to 5.1 oz for 'Early Calwonder'. Cull production which ranged from
32.7 to 78.8% was very slightly influenced by beet armyworm damage and
virus-like symptoms (with previously noted exceptions). Most cull fruit
were misshapen or too flat.
Summary. Best seasonal performance came from 'Zerto', 'Galaxy', 'Whopper
Improved', 'Crispy', 'Clovis', 'Predi', P1288, and 'Ssupersweet 860'.
This conclusion is based on the combination of high marketable yield,
average fruit size of 6 oz or greater for the season, cull production less
than 35%, and fruit yield exceeding 6 fruit per plant. Of these: 'Whopper
Improved', 'Ssupersweet 860', 'Predi', and 'Clovis' are early maturing;
'Zerto', 'Predi', and 'Clovis' are long bell peppers (fruit length to
width ratio = 1.4); 'Ssupersweet 860' and P1288 are yellow at maturity;
and good yields continued into the fourth harvest for 'Ssupersweet 860',
'Crispy', 'Galaxy', 'Zerto', and 'Clovis'.
Note: The information contained in this report is a summary of
experimental results and should not be used as recommendations
for crop production. Where trade names are used, no
