BELL PEPPER VARIETY TRIAL FOR SPRING 1989

T. K. Howe and W. E. Waters1

A replicated variety trial was conducted on sweet bell pepper at the Gulf
Coast Research and Education Center, Bradenton, FL in the spring of 1989.
Thirty-three entries were included in this trial. In conjunction with the
replicated trial, an observational area of single plots was utilized to
screen 35 additional bell and two hot pepper cultivars and/or breeding
lines.

Materials and Methods

Beds 32 inches wide and 9 inches high on 5 ft centers were formed in early
a February 1989. A single band of 18-0-25-2 was placed in a shallow groove
down the center of each bed at 210 lb/1000 linear feet of bed (LFB).
Superphosphate (0-20-0 plus minor elements as F503 oxide at 80 lb/ton) was
incorporated 4 inches across the width of the beds at 75 lb/1000 LFB. The
beds were fumigated with methylbromide:chloropicrin (67:33) at 36 lb/1000
LFB and covered with black polyethylene plastic. Land was irrigated by
seepage from ditches spaced every six beds. An acre was equal to 8712
LFB.

Seed of all pepper entries (Tables 2 and 8) were sown on Jan. 5, 1989 into
small plastic trays containing coarse vermiculite. Seedlings were
transplanted 14 days later to planter flats (1.5 x 1.5 x 2.5 inches)
containing peat and vermiculite (1:1, v:v) amended with dolomite (11.3
lb), superphosphate (5.6 lb) and hydrated lime (2.8 lb), each per 1 cu.
yd. of media.

Transplants for the replicated and observational trials were set into the
field on Feb. 22, 1989 in two rows per bed spaced 12 inches apart (6
inches to each side of the fertilizer band) with an in-row plant spacing
of 8 inches. At transplanting plants were watered with 20-20-2C
fertilizer at 5 lb/100 gal water. After freezing temperatures occurred
on Feb. 27 Mar. 6, heavy resetting (20-25% of field) was necessary to
establish complete plant stands. There were four replications of 20
plants per plot arranged in a randomized complete block design. For the

1Biological Administrator I and Center Director, respectively.

observational trial, single plots of 20 plants per entry were grouped by
seed company. Plants were staked and tied at the end of April due to
lodging.

Integrated pest management was used for insect population control
throughout the season. Predominant pests during the season were pepper
weevil, armyworms, aphids, sweetpotato whitefly, and thrips.
Appropriately timed applications of registered pesticides were utilized
for these pests. A regular spray program utilizing maneb with or without
copper was followed for control of fungal and bacterial pathogens. Foliar
diseases were not a problem during the spring. Paraquat was applied post
transplant to the row middles for weed control.

Fruit were picked on May 4, 11, 17 and 25 as green or purple (immature)
fruit. Pepper fruit were graded as cull or marketable based on external
quality. Marketable fruit were firm, free from damage or disease, and
well shaped. Total fruit harvested and cull fruit were counted and
weighed. A sample of eight marketable fruit per plot were selected at
random at the first harvest, or at the second harvest if eight fruit were
not available at first harvest. These fruit were measured for length,
diameter, wall thickness and number of lobes. Yields were computed on a
weight basis and were expressed as 28 lb cartons. Qualitative evaluations
of horticultural characteristics were made of all plants prior to harvest.

Results and Discussion

General weather information is presented in Table 1. During the spring
1989 production season, temperatures were warmer from Feb.-Apr. and
typical for May as compared to the 33-year averages. Rainfall was less
throughout the season compared to the 33-year averages (8).

Replicated Trial: Characteristics of plants and fruit with general
ratings of all cultivars and advanced breeding lines are given in Table 2.
These qualitative evaluations were made on a single replication for each
entry before harvesting began. Generally plant diseases were not a
problem. Sunscald was the most prevalent fruit disorder. Overall ratings
were 8 or higher for 24 entries.

Seasonal yields (Table 3) ranged from 85.9 cartons/1000 LFB for 'Olympic'
to 194.3 cartons/1000 LFB for 'SSupersweet 860'. Nine entries were not
significantly different from 'SSupersweet 860' in yield; 'Lucia',
'Verdel', 'Galaxy', 'Whopper Improved', 'Crispy', 'Mello', 'PR-200-2-1',
'Gator Belle' and 'PSX 17885'. The average number of marketable fruit
borne per plant ranged from 2.8 for 'PR-200-12-1' to 5.1 for 'Crispy' and
'Lucia'. All of the highest yielding entries had at least 3.5 marketable
fruit per plant. Plant stand was significantly less than 100% for 'Sunre
4512', 'Bell Captain' and 'Olympic'. Average fruit weight was greatest
for 'PSX 17885' and 'PR-200-2-1' at 7.4 and 7.1 oz, respectively. Weights
ranged from 4.9 oz for 'HMX 6664' to 7.4 oz for 'PSX 17785'. Cull
production exceeded 30% for only two entries, 'HMX 5661' and 'PR-200-12-1'
although these were not significantly different from 17 other entries.
Lowest cull production from 'Crispy' was not significantly different from:
'Galaxy', 'Lucia', 'SSupersweet 860', 'Isabel' and 'Gator Belle'. The
number of fruit per carton, based on weight, ranged from 61.2 for 'PSX

17885' to 91.5 for 'HMX 6664'. Any entry with less than 70 fruit per
carton was not significantly different from 'PSX 17885'.

Marketable fruit dimensions were assessed at the first harvest when fruit
were of maximum size for the season. Fruit length was greatest among all
entries for 'Melody' at 4.7 inches. No entry had fruit shorter than 3.4
inches. Fruit width ranged from 3.1 inches for 'Golden Summer' and
'Marengo' to 3.7 inches for 'Mello'. Wall thickness was 5.3 mm for
'Wonder Belle' to 6.8 mm for 'Whopper Improved': Only 'Verdel', 'PR-200-
2-1', 'Crispy' and 'PR-200-12-1' were similar in wall thickness to
'Whopper Improved'. Seven entries had significantly fewer than 4 lobes
per fruit.

Earliness as judged by the greatest marketable yield at the first harvest
was evident for 'PSX 17885', 'PR-200-2-1' and 'Whopper Improved', all of
which had more than 47 cartons of fruit/1000 LFB (Table 4) on May 4.
Marketable yield ranged from 5.2 cartons/1000 LFB for 'Golden Summer' to
63.3 cartons/1000 LFB for 'PSX 17885'. The average number of fruit
harvested per plant ranged from 0.1 for 'Golden Summer' to 1.3 for 'PSX
17885'. The average fruit weight exceeded 7.5 oz at the first harvest for
eleven entries, none of which were significantly different than 'PR-200-2-
1' at 8.9 oz. 'Lucia' with cull production of 2.3%, by weight, was only
significantly less than 'Olympic', 'Bell Boy', 'Gator Belle, 'Green Boy'
and 'Bell Captain'.

At the second harvest on May 11, (Table 5), marketable yields ranged from
10.6 cartons/1000 LFB to 55.9 cartons/1000 LFB for 'Olympic' and 'Verdel',
respectively. Twelve other entries were similar to 'Verdel' in yield.
The number of fruit produced per plant ranged from 0.3 for 'Olympic' to
1.3 for 'Gator Belle'. Twenty-six entries produced fruit which were
heavier than 6.0 oz, not significantly different than the 7.3 oz fruit
produced by 'Galaxy' or 'PR-200-2-1'.

The 5.3% cull production from 'SSupersweet 860' and 'Sunre 4512' was only
significantly less than 'HMX 5661', 'Orobelle', 'SSupersweet 850' and
'Memphis'.

At the third harvest on May 17, only 'Mission Belle', 'Golden Summer',
'Orobelle', 'Olympic', 'PSX 17885', 'Big Belle', 'Memphis', and 'Jupiter'
were significantly different in yield from 'Crispy' (Table 6). The
average number of fruit per plant ranged from 0.7 to 1.8 among the 33
entries. Cull production ranged from 5.3% to 33.1% with entries which
produced up to 22% culls not significantly different from these which gave
5.3% culls.

Twenty-one entries were similar to the 78.8 cartons/1000 LFB yield of
'Lucia' at the fourth and final harvest on May 25 (Table 7). 'PR-200-12-
1' which produced 28.1 cartons/1000 LFB, was significantly lower in yield
than only six entries. At this time, more than two fruit per plant were
harvested for 'Lucia', HMX 6664', 'Golden Summer', 'Bell Boy', 'Isabel'
and 'Crispy'. Fruit weight of 5.9 oz or greater came from 'Verdel', 'PSX
17885' and 'PR-200-2-1'. No entry produced less than 16.4% culls at the
last harvest.

With the information from Tables 4-7, it is possible to trace each entry's
performance through the season. For instance, 'PR-200-2-1' yielded very
well on May 4 and produced progressively less as the season continued
until at the fourth harvest on May 25 was one-third of that of the first.
And 'Lucia' which was an intermediate entry with respect to yield on May
4, produced more as the season progressed until the final harvest yield
was more than twice that of the first.

Observational Trial: The characteristics of the plant and fruit for
observational trial entries is contained in Table 8. Only one entry, 'PSR
3987' was rated in the unacceptable range due to lack of plant uniformity.
Other entries were fair to excellent.

Seasonal yield assessments appear in Table 9. These figures were
extrapolated as averages of the final stand from 20 plants set as a single
field plot. If a figure of 160 cartons/1000 LFB is taken as a fair yield
for bell pepper (based on the replicated trial) several of the
observational entries deserve further examination: 'HMX 7653', 'HMX 7654',
'CAX 86-2080', 'P 8048', 'PSR 3687', 'PSR 8287', 'PSR 36886', 'PSR 64886',
'PSR 66686' and '3-X61'.

Summary: Best seasonal performance in replicated trial came from
'SSupersweet 860', 'Lucia', 'Galaxy', 'Crispy' and 'PR-200- 2-1' based on
a combination of 3 or more of the following: yield, average fruit weight,
number of fruit produced per plant and low cull production. Early
yielding choices include 'PSX 17885', 'PR-200- 2-1' and 'Whopper
Improved'.

Note: The information contained in this report is a summary of
experimental results and should not be used as recommendations for crop
production. Where trade names are used, no discrimination is intended and
