BELL PEPPER VARIETY TRIAL FOR SPRING 1988:
IMMATURE (GREEN) AND MATURE (COLORED) HARVEST

T. K. Howe and t'. E. Haters1

A replicated variety trial was conducted on sweet bell pepper at the Gulf
Coast Research and Education Center, Bradenton, FL in the spring of 1988.
This trial was designed as a factorial experiment in order to assess yield
potential of pepper cultivars/breeding lines at the immature (green or
purple) fruit and mature (red or yellow) fruit stages. Twenty-six entries
were included in this trial and is similar to one conducted in the spring
of 1987(6). In conjunction with the replicated trial, an observational
area of single plots was utilized to screen 45 additional bell and
cubanelle pepper cultivars and breeding lines at immature harvest only.

Materials and Methods
Deds were formed in mid-February, 1988. A single band of 18-0-25-2 was
placed in a shallow groove down the center of each bed at the rate of 210
lb/1000 linear feet of bed (LFB). The beds were fumigated with
methylbromide:chloropicrin (67:33) at 36 lb/1000 LFS and covered with
black polyethylene plastic. The beds were on 4.5 ft centers and irrigated
by seepage from ditches spaced every seven beds.
Seed of all pepper entries (Tables 1 and 3) were sown on Jan. 8, 1982 into
small plastic trays containing coarse vermiculite. Seedlings were
transplanted 17 days later in Todd Planter Flats (model 1150, Speedling,
Inc.) containing peat and vermiculite (1:1, v:v) amended with dolomite
(16.9 lb), superphosphate (5.6 lb) and MicromaxR minor element mix (1.1
lb), each per 1 cu. yd. of media.
Transplants for the main trial were set into the field on Mar. 1, 1988 in
two rows per bed spaced 12 inches apart (6 inches to each side of the
fertilizer band) with an in-row plant spacing of 8 inches. Plants were
watered at transplanting with HutrileafR (20-20-20) at 5 lb/100 gal water.
Limited resetting occurred on Mlar. 4, 7, 10 and 14, 1988 to establish
complete plant stands. There were four replications of 20 plants per plot
for each entry and harvest treatment arranged in a randomized complete
block design.

1Biological Administrator I and Center Director, respectively.

The observational trial area was removed from the main trial due to space
constraints and was handled differently in the following ways. The beds
had two bands of 15-0-30 placed in shallow grooves on the bed shoulders at
the rate of 240 lb/1000 LFB. Twenty plants per plot were placed in single
rows down the bed center with 8 inches between plants.

Integrated pest management was used for insect population control
throughout the season. Predominant pests during the season were pepper
weevil, armyworms, aphids and thrips. Appropriately timed applications of
Vydate, Ambush, Lannate, Thiodan, and Dipel were utilized for these pests.
A regular spray program utilizing maneb-copper sprays was followed as
prevention against fungal and bacterial pathogens. Foliar diseases were
not a problem during the spring. Paraquat was applied post transplant to
the row middles for weed control.

Fruit were picked on i4ay 5, 12, 19 and 26 for plots designated for
immature fruit harvest. Fruit were picked on June 1, 8 and 15 for plots
designated for mature fruit harvest. Pepper fruit were graded as cull or
marketable based on external quality. Total fruit harvested and cull
fruit were counted and weighed. A sample of eight marketable fruit per
plot were selected at random at the first harvest (sometimes at the second
harvest if eight fruit were not available at first harvest). These fruit
were measured for length, diameter, wall thickness and number of lobes.
Yields were computed on a weight basis and were expressed as 25 lb
cartons.

General weather information is in Table 2. The spring 1988 production
season was fairly typical with respect to weather statistics as compared
to the 33-year averages.

Results and Discussion

Combined Analysis of Immature (green or purple) Versus nature (red or
yellow) Harvest. Several performance parameters were analyzed to compare
the seasonal averages of immature fruit harvest with the mature fruit
harvest (Table 3). The marketable yield, averaged for all 26 entries in
the trial was greater for the immature fruit (147.2 cartons/1000 LFB) than
that for mature fruit (85.3 cartons/1000 LFB). This is due to (a) one
fewer picking for mature fruit (fruit not available to pick) and (b) a
greater number of cull fruit from mature fruit harvests. naturee fruit
were generally culled for sunscald injury, small size or deformities.
Seasonal yield results for immature versus mature harvests were similar to
the 1987 trial (6) which had twice as much immature fruit yield as mature
fruit yield with four pickings for each.

Early yields (first harvest comparison) differed with fruit maturity at
harvest. Immature fruit yielded an average of 27.9 cartons/1000 LFB, and
mature fruit yielded 19.0 cartons/1000 LFB.

Average fruit weight of marketable fruit was greater for mature fruit (6.2
oz) than for immature fruit (4.9 oz) and so the number of fruit per
carton, computed on a weight basis, is greater for mature fruit (6562)
than immature fruit (82.7). Also fruit size was different with harvest
maturity. Mature fruit were slightly longer and broader than immature

fruit. Wall thickness was greater for mature fruit (5.9 mi:i) than for
immature fruit (5.5 mm). These data reflect the tendency by pickers to
harvest fruit which were smaller in size and weight than if the fruit were
not picked until having matured.

Summary for Immature Harvest. Seasonal yields and fruit characteristics
of pepper harvested as green or purple appears in Table 4. Marketable
yields for the season ranged from 98.6 cartons/1000 LFB for 'Yellona' to
184.5 cartons/1000 LFB for 'Summer Sweet 860'. Eighteen other entries
were not significantly different in yield than 'Summer Sweet 850'. Two
commonly grown open pollinated peppers, 'Early Calwonder' and 'Yolo Wonder
L', were significantly lower in yield than 'Summer Sweet 860'. Early
yield rangod from 11.2 cartons/1000 LFG for 'Yolo Wonder L' to 50.4
cartons/1000 LFB for 'Whopper Improved'. Eleven other entries produced
early yields similar to 'Whoppcr Improved'. High seasonal yields were
strongly correlated to the averaged number of marketable fruit produced
per plant and a lower proportion of cull fruit.

Average seasonal fruit weight ranged from 4.1 oz or 'Yellona' to 5.7 oz
for 'iMemphis'. Eleven entries produced fruit of 5.0 oz or greater as a
seasonal average. Average fruit weight at the first harvest ranged from
4.7 oz for 'Yellona' to 6.0 oz for 'Whopper Improved'; however, only
'Yellona' and 'Whopper Improved' were significantly different from each
other. The number of fruit per carton (computed by weight) ranged from
70.8 for 'ilemphis' to 99.0 for 'Yellona'. Seventeen other were similar to
'iiemphis' in the number of fruit per carton.

Cull production ranged from 7.67 for 'Belmont' to 29.5% for 'Violetta'.
Five entries, 'Belmont', 'Bell Captain', 'Lady Dell', 'Crispy', and 'Bell
Boy', produced less than 10% culls.
Blockiest fruit were produced by 'Summer Sweet 850', 'Orobelle', 'Summer
Sweet 850' and 'Violetta' (Table 5). All but 5 entries had an average of
at least 3 lobes. Fruit wall thickness ranged from 4.7 millimeters for
'XPH 5544' to 6.6 millimeters for 'Whopper Improved'. Four entries had
fruit wall thickness of at least 6.0 millimeters.

In the last six years, only 'Crispy' has placed highly with respect to
seasonal immature fruit yield in each trial (1-6). Lady Bell' was among
the top yielding entries in the last 5 of 6 years and 'Gator Belle' in 4
of the last 5 years (1-6).

Summary for iMature Harvest. Total marketable yields (from three pickings)
for mature fruit harvests ranged from 22.7 cartons/1000 LFB for 'Jupiter'
to 144.7 cartons/1000 LFB for 'Orobelle' (Table 6). Wine other entries
were similar to 'Orobelle' in high yields, they were: 'Lady Bell',
'Crispy', 'Hission Belle', 'Summer Sweet 300', 'Belmont', shopperr
Improved', 'Gator Belle', 'Better Belle' and 'XPI 5544'. As for the
immature harvest, high yields depended on a high number of marketable
fruit per plant and low cull production. 'Lady Dell', 'Crispy' and
'Whopper Improved' were among the top yielding entries from the 1987
mature harvest (6).

Early yields ranged from 0.0 cartons/1000 LFD for 'Jupiter' to 55.6
cartons/1000 LFB for missionn Belle'. 'Lady Bell', 'Crispy' and
'Orobelle' were similar to 'i'ission Belle' in early yield.

Average fruit weight for the season ranged from 4.8 oz for 'Yellona' to
8.2 oz for 'Whopper Improved'. Only 'Bell Captain' at 8.0 oz and
'iemphis' at 7.8 oz were similar in weight to 'Jhopper Improved'. Early
fruit weight ranged from 4.2 oz for 'Yellona' to 8.8 oz for 'Belle
Captain'. Six other entries were similar to 'Dell Captain' in first
harvest fruit weight, they were: 'Belmont' (8.6 oz), 'Orobelle' (8.3 oz),
'Summer Sweet 360' (7.7 oz), 'Hemphis' (7.7 oz), 'Summer Sweet 850' (7.7
oz), 'Sunre 4500' (7.2 oz) and 'Hhopper Improved (7.1 oz).

Cull production was very high for mature harvests. Cull fruit were
generally cauood by ounccald, deformities and small size. Cull production
ranged from 28.5% for 'Crispy' to 69.3% for 'Jupiter'. Nine other entries
were similar to 'Crispy' in low cull production (less 44%),

The number of fruit per carton ranged from 49.7 for 'Uhopper Improved' to
83.0 for 'Yellona'. Eight other entries were similar to hopperr
Improved' in fruit per carton.

Blockiest fruit were produced by 'Orobelle' and 'Summer Sweet 850' (Table
7). All but five entries had an average of at least three lobes. Fruit
wall thickness ranged from 5.1 millimeters for 'HiiX 3647' to 6.7
millimeters for 'Better Belle'. Eleven entries had fruit wall thickness
of at least 6.0 millimeters.

Observational Entries. Forty-five entries were included in single plot
evaluation and were harvested at the immature stage only (Tables 8 and 9).
Yields and fruit characteristics are averages based on stands of 20
plants. Based on estimations of yield the following bell peppers merit
further study: 'ACX 070601', 'Four Corners', 'Big Delle', 'Early Yellow
Giant', 'Golden Summer', 'PSR 20685', and '3-X18'. However, 'ACX 870601'
is a very long-fruited pepper, and 'Four Corners', 'Big Belle' and 'Early
Yellow Giant' are long-fruited.

Of the cubanelles, 'Flavor-Fry' and 'High Fry' were the highest yielding
entries.

One notable entry in the observational trial was 'PSR 3987' which produced
a well-colored deep purple fruit.

Overall Summary. Cultivars evaluated previously (6) which performed well
overall included: 'Crispy', 'Lady Bell' and 'Belmont'. The best yielding
yellow peppers whether grown for green or yellow fruit were 'Orobelle' and
'Summer Sweet 860'.
