BELL PEPPER VARIETY TRIAL SPRING 19861
T. K. Howe and W. E. Waters
A replicated variety trial was conducted on sweet bell pepper at the
Gulf Coast Research and Education Center, Bradenton, FL in the spring of
1986. In conjunction with the replicated trial, an observational area of
single plots was established to screen other commercial cultivars and
advanced breeding lines.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Field preparation for the spring of 1986 began in April, 1983. Since
the land (an EauGallie fine sand) had not been-farmed in 25 years, .the
soil was treated in April, 1983 with 1200 lb/acre superphosphate (0-20-0
containing 80 Ib/ton micronutrients as F503 oxide) and 2 tons/acre
dolomite. In the spring of 1984, the land was utilized for the production
of tomatoes, and in the spring of 1985 in the production of peppers.
Beds were formed in February, 1986. Incorporated fertilizer which
covered the full width of the bed, included 18-0-25-2 (26 lb/100 linear
feet of bed) high calcium lime (8.1 lb/100LF3) and 34-0-0 (4.2 lb/100
LFB). A single band of 13-0-25-2 (N-P205-K20-1iO) was applied into a
shallow groove down the center of each bed0 at the rate of 26.2
lb/100 linear feet of bed (LBF). The beds were fumigated with
methylbromide: chloropicrin (67:33) at 3.6 lb/100 LFB and covered with
black polyethylene mulch.
Seed of all pepper entries (Tables 1 and 8) studied in the spring of
1986 were sown on January 9, 1986 into plastic trays containing coarse
vermiculite. Seedlings were transplanted 16 days later into TODD(R)
Planter flats (model #150, Speedling,. Inc.) containing peat and
vermiculite (1:1, v:v) amended with dolomite (16.9 lb), superphosphate
(5.6 Ib) and Micromax(R) (1.1 lb), per 1 cu. yd. of media.
Transplants were set in the field on March 6, 1986 in two rows per
bed spaced 12 inches apart (6 inches to each side of the center fertilizer
band) with an in-row plant spacing of 8 inches. Plants were watered in
with Nutrileaf(R) 20-20-20 at 5 lb/100 gal water. Beds, row middles and

ditch banks were treated with Diazinon(R) bait to control mole cricket
populations. Limited resetting of the field occurred on March 10 and 13.
There were four replications of 30 plants per plot for each entry arranged
in a randomized complete block design in the replicated trial and single
plots of 30 plants each in the observational area.
Integrated pest management was used for insect control throughout the
season. Each of the following was applied once during the season: Monitor
(mid-March for leafminers), Lannate (late April for thrips), Thiodan (late
April for aphids) and Vydate (early Way for aphids).
A regular spray program was followed as prevention against fungal
diseases. iI-22 Special (maneb plus ZnS04) was applied weekly after field
establishment. No copper was used since bacterial spot was never
detected.
Fruit were harvested on Hay 7, 15 and 22, 1986. Peppers were graded
as cull or marketable based on external quality. Total fruit harvested
and cull fruit were weighed and counted. A sample of 10 marketable fruit
per plot were selected at random at the first harvest, and the fruit were
measured for length, diameter, and number of lobes. Yields were computed
on a weight basis and were expressed in 25-lb cartons.
General weather information is in Table .2. The spring was dry as
evidenced by the lack of bacterial spot infestation.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Replicated Trial: Seasonal yield and fruit characteristics for the
replicated trial appear in Table 3. Eleven cultivars and two breeding
lines were similar in production of greatest seasonal yield. Marketable
yield ranged from 74.1 to 174.8 cartons/1000 LFB for 'Blockbuster' and
'Gator Belle', respectively. The number of fruit produced per plant was
greatest for 'Gator Belle' (5.8), 'Crispy' (5.2), 'Lady Bell' (5.1), XPH
5020 (5.0), 1-BPTc-28 (4.9), 'Pro Bell' (4.8), 'Bell Boy' (4.8) and 'Bell
Captain' (4.6).. The greatest average fruit weight was produced by 'Belle
Star' (5.1 oz), all other entries were at 4.5 oz or less. The number of
fruit per carton, based on weight, ranged from 70.0 ('Belle Star') to
113.1 ('California Wonder 300'). High yields were generally influenced by
large fruit size and. low cull production. Low yields were affected by
small fruit size and/or high cull production.
marketable fruit dimensions were assessed at the first harvest when
fruit were of maximum size for the season. Blockiest fruit (length/
diameter ratio nearest to one) were produced by 'Bell Boy', 'Summer Sweet
Brand 860', 'Memphis', 'Early Calwonder', 'Jupiter', NVH ,3053 and
'California Wonder. 300'. While 'Melody', 'Bell Tower' and 'Big Bertha'
produced the longest, least blocky fruit. The longest fruit were produced
by 'Melody' (4.8 inches) and 'Big Bertha' (4.3 inches). Fruit length
ranged from 3..1'to 4.8 inches among the entries. Fruit diameter ranged
from 2.7 to 3.3 inches. The number of lobes per fruit was 3.5 or greater
for three cultivars, 'Bell Tower', 'Memphis' and 'California.Wonder 300'.
All but three entries averaged at least 3.0 lobes.
-3-
Earliness as judged by the greatest proportion of seasonal yield
being harvested at the first picking was evident for 'Hybelle' and 'Belle
Star' each with greater than 40% of the total harvest picked on May 7
(Table 4). The latest cultivars were 'Yolo Wonder L' and 'California
Wonder 300' both with less than 10% yield at the initial harvest.
Earliness, as determined by the greatest marketable yield at the first
harvest was the same for thirteen entries (Table 5). Marketable yield at
the first harvest ranged from 5.5 ('Yolo Wonder L') to 62.4 ('Gator
Belle') cartons/1000 LFB. The average number of fruit per plant ranged
from 0.1 ('Yolo Wonder L') to 1.6 ('Gator Belle'). The average fruit
weight was greatest for 'Yolo Wonder L' (7.1 oz), however very few fruit
were harvested from this variety and the large fruit size is a distorted
value. 'Belle Star' with 6.6 oz fruit was, more accurately, the entry
with the greatest fruit size. Cull production ranged from 0% for
'California Wonder 300' and 'Yolo Wonder L' to 33.3% for 'Blockbuster'.
Again, the two cultivars with no cull production is not a true indication
of quality fruit production since very few fruit were harvested. The
extremely poor performance of 'Blockbuster' was due to virus-like symptoms
of bumpy, puckered fruit surface, distortion, and discoloration.
By the second harvest on Hay 15 (Table 6), eighteen entries were
indistinguishable with respect to greatest marketable yield, all of which
produced at least 1.5 fruit per plant. Average fruit size ranged from 3.6
oz to 4.7 oz with few significant differences among the cultivars. Cull
production increased dramatically at the second harvest for all varieties
due primarily to sunscald. The plant canopy was drastically altered
during the first harvest, opening the plants, and exposing fruit to the
sun. Therefore, the second harvest yielded many damaged fruit. Average
number of fruit per carton declined compared to the first harvest, and
ranged from 85.4 ('Belle Star') to 119.0 ('Espadon').
The third harvest was very similar to the second harvest in yield
(Table 7). Sixteen entries were similar with respect to greatest
marketable yield. Yield ranged from 23.2 ('Hybelle') to 64.9 ('Lady
Bell') cartons/1000 LFB. Fruit harvested per plant varied from 1.2
('Blockbuster' and 'Hybelle') to 2.5 ('Lady Bell'). Cull production
ranged from 16.5% for 'Crispy' to 43.3% for 'Blockbuster'. Host cultivars
fell in the 20-30% bracket for cull production.
Observational Plots: Twenty-six cultivars and breeding lines were
harvested as single 30-plant plots and the seasonal summary is in Table 8.
Based on a minimum yield of 135 cartons/1000 LFBD which was considered
high yield in the replicated trial, eleven of the observational entries
were high yielding. UK 84-142, NK 84-140, and 'iMission Belle" produced
greater than 170 cartons/1000 LFB. Blockiest fruit were produced by ACX-
841715, 'Big Belle', 'Herced', 6C-X988, NCX-4013, NK 34-140, IK 04-142, NK
84-2145, NVH 3052, NVII 3053, P 1796, 5 BPTc-1, PSR 14584R, AVX 0202 and
AVX 1001. Two non-bell pepper cultivars appeared to do well even without
comparison to similar types. 'Key Largo' a Cubanelle-type pepper produced
107.8 cartons/1000 LFB with 7.4 peppers harvested per plant.
'Butterfingers', a small, sweet yellow pepper, produced 124.0 cartons/1000
LFB with 47.8 peppers harvested per plant. Each produced attractive,
uniform fruit and had vigorous plants.
-4-
Summary: Best performance based on seasonal yield, earliness,
blockiness and average fruit weight was 'Belle Star'. Best performance
based on seasonal yield, earliness, fruit yield per plant and blockiness
were: 'Bell Boy' and 'Summer Sweet Brand 860'. Best performance based on
seasonal yield, earliness, and blockiness was 'iemphis'.
Other outstanding cultivars based on total yield, fruit yield per
plant and early yield were: 'Bell Captain', 'Crispy', 'Gator Belle',
'Lady Bell', 'Pro Bell' and I-BPTc-28.
'Early Calwonder'was outstanding in total seasonal yield and blockiness.
